2018 Olympic Figure Skating Ladies FS

I definitely don't disagree with you. All the same, all the skaters I mentioned did far more for the sport than Tara, Sarah, or Adelina ever did in my opinion.

I know right now emotions are high, but I hope those who think Zagitova deserved her win don't put down Medvedeva for things that they believe she does poorly. Instead of putting Evgenia down, let's put Alina up!!! Both girls did super well today.

TBH, I thought both of them had somewhat weak outings, especially Zagitova if you compare to her team event performance.

Ugh, this is also why I feel sorry for Alina (and why I suspect she has to hide her tears of joy). Probably most of Russia, esp the serious figure skating fans are rooting for Zhenya. They know her and love her, whereas Alina is still sort of the new kid. It's gotta be tough dethroning the queen. Just like if Shoma beat Yuzuru at Olympics, I guarantee you the Yuzu fans (including myself) would be out for blood... I hope Alina's team, and her fellow Russians celebrate her victory appropriately and don't deny her moment in the glory just because they are upset for Zhenya. That wouldn't be fair for Alina either.

This logic is the biggest reason skating is hard to follow and appreciate. Super-fans don't always care about the actual results and performance going on. Instead, it's the emotional favorite. Zagitova deserved to win. That's the truth.

It's not surprising though. Society almost always prefers the younger girls; I mean look at the Oscar for Best Actress when was the last time a veteran won over a young ingenue? When given a chance to vote for the young pretty girl, almost everyone does it...

Weird comparison. Evgenia is a young, pretty girl. And Frances McDormand is likely to win Best Actress, so your argument doesn't really hold.

Eteri and Med were the two that turned ladies FS that way. Now they've just lost control of the monster they unleashed.

And please, people have been whining about Med's lack of artistry and her programs being too "technical" and crammed with stupid mime movements for the last 3 years. Now that she's lost, everyone's trying to rewrite the narrative into Med being an amazing artist who wuzrobbed.

Med got beaten at her own game, that's what happened.

I agree that Med is overscored in PCS - yet another problem with the system is shown by her apparently being a stronger artist than Carolina or Satoko. But I believe she's head and shoulders above Alina's backloaded program artistically, and it's an absolute farce that the PCS are just being handed out arbitrarily.

"I did absolutely everything I could."
-Zhenya to Eteri

I'm just. I'm just so mad. I'm so mad because you're world champion for two years and you miss one competition, and you're finished. You work on artistry, and they hand the same PCS to someone fresh out of juniors. It's infuriating. It's painful. It's sad.

IJS might have helped push the tech, but it's also stifled art.
I'm heartbroken. But I'm also furious.

I'm heartbroken, but this is not new. The overscoring game started at Sochi 2014 and it didn't stop. Alina's pcs were too high all season long but nobody cared until she ended up beating the former judges' pet (who used to beat Mao, Kostner and some all time greats in pcs with junior programs as well). It's painful, but it's the game they've been playing for years.

They usually give it to the superior technical skater at the Olympics. This forum would've probably melted down, but they would've given a clean Nathan the OGM over a clean Hanyu or Javi imo (justified or not).

Lord, don't even put that out into the atmosphere. I would have been pissed and I'm a Nathan fan :laugh2:

Ya, but they could've chosen Med but they went with Zagitova because she's younger b/c of like a societal bias imo.

That's why it is a fallacy. How dare they hold injuries against skaters. Wholly unethical, no loyalty, self serving. Federations interests above the skaters based on lies, half truths and mathematical odds.

If it was only about youth Aljona and Carolina would've been long gone.

One word, though, of empathy for Gabrielle Daleman, for which must've been a horror night! Cheer up, you have a gold medal, which you've really deserved as you've contributed to it.

And, well still flashed by Kaetlyn Osmond. I thought no way is she going to get bronze after Satoko, but to skate like this when it counts, she is the real champion of my heart tonight. Of course, I applaud Alina too. She came back after her mistake, when she could have fallen apart. Very impressive for a 15 a year old.

I know most people expect her to either not be around or at least competitive anymore when the next olys roll around but you know what? I really want Med to prove us wrong and go in for a second Olys and win.

I really had hoped for her to win - that FS was a thing of beauty but that god damn tech score..

Yes please to Zhenya proving us wrong at the next Olys!! I hope Zhenya will be inspired by Aliona and never give up  I know people will say that's a delusional thought, but Zhenya is just such a fighter, I have faith in her.

And trying to look at the bright side: maybe this will encourage her to fight harder than ever. May she come back with a vengeance

Results if judging were accurate and based on complete programs:

1. Kaetlyn
2. Evgenia
3. Alina
4. Satoko
5. Kostner

Damn shame and sad I couldn't fit Gabby in here.

Results if judging were accurate

1. Evgenia
2. Kaetlyn
3. Satoko
4. Alina
5. Kostner or Kaori with the former having the edge on PCS and the latter TES.

If it was really "accurate" then Kaetlyn should be first. Everyone feels sympathetic for Med tonight but really Med shouldn't even be getting half of her GOEs she gets on her jumps (esp combos).

Well I can't say I am surprised at the results. We've been speculating for awhile that Alina would win. So it really should not be the shock of the century. An Olympic medal is such an amazing achievement no matter what. And to get two of them in one comp? That's an opportunity that is a new one. I kind of feel like Alina would be better off getting silver. I just hope people don't hate on the poor girl. She looked so lonely in the kiss n cry. What a difference compared to the men's competition where they were really embracing each other and sharing their joy. I dont really feel like either Russian girl blew me away tonight. I would have been thrilled to see Satoko or Kaori medal, but I can't deny that the most impressionable skater in my opinion was Katelyn. She's the one I will remember. I finally got to see her perform the heck out of her free skate and she really sent her jumps. I don't want her lovely peformance to be overshadowed by the drama tonight and be forgotten. Congrats to all the medalists. I hope their future is bright.

I'm a bit worried about the reception Zagitova is going to get, and wondering if the Russian fans are going to send her hate mail given she snatched the gold at the very last second.

Of course not (except for a handful of crazies, perhaps). They will be happy that they have 2 great skaters who brought home medals, especially after all the OAR/doping mess around these games. It's natural that Evgenia is more popular now...she's been around, put in her time, won 2 Worlds already. It used to be that Evgenia was the one who was underrated while Yulia's fans kept clinging to the hope that she would come back. Alina will be appreciated in time just the same but right now, nobody knows a thing about her, relatively speaking.

I love Satoko, give her all the PCS. But her jumps are +0/+1 GOE in quality. She can make it up somewhat on the spins and steps, but she just gives away too many points on the jumps to justify a medal here, as much as I love her.

It was Eteri’s choice to milk the system that way, Evgenia is only one of her many students. Eteri tried it with all her girls, she had the same plan for Seraphima Sakhanovich. But Evgenia turned out as the best of the bunch - until Alina arrived. But still, at this point Med is much much better artistically and much less robotic than Alina imo.

So the US ladies finish 9th-10th-11th ... Forget the podium, it will be a while before a US lady even makes it 4th at the Olympics (a la Gracie Gold in 2014 Sochi).
