2018 Olympic Figure Skating Ladies FS

Let's not drag Yuna into this. She is enjoying her retirement and being awesome at life I'm sure.

Lets keep this thread focused on the ladies competing here.

Btw, did anyone see Yuna in the stands? Was she even there or did the camera miss her?:scratch2:

+5 -5 new scoring is a TERRIBLE idea. I cannot fathom who thought this was a good idea. The judges can't even correctly apply GOEs as they exist now, what made anyone think adding more confusing categories would make things BETTER?

It will be abused immediately, as I have to imagine is the true intention regardless of how the people pushing for this are trying to sell it.

She was there for the men's event and pairs apparently. She's a big fan of Yuzuru's I think.

Maybe she wanted the focus to be on the skaters who were there and not herself. Yuna is classy. I can see her not wanting to steal anyone elses spotlight.

As I said all season she tends to peak later in the season, as she has done the past 3 years, as per Worlds last year and 4CC's in 2016, (she did not go to Boston). So proud of you Kaetlyn!!!

Yes but she still messed at worlds, 4CC, etc. This wasn't a Katelyn peak, this was the best skate of her life, and also the best inconsistent program turned beautiful at the right moment I've ever seen. She finally became a swan. It was nuts, she can bring that medal home and be so proud. She's always given me Sasha Cohen vibes - amazing skater with it all but you watch her and just know she will fail. But she didn't, no Sash curse for her!

Thanks. She's a real class act!

At least falls will get seriously punished. And it creates some room for differentation. Really, essentially every clean element by top skaters is +2 or +3 GOE now, almost without exception. So the only thing differentiating those is how many of the judges feel like giving +2 and how many +3. With a +5 -5 range there'll be more meaningful separation - Assuming it's done correctly.

I think you're overly optimistic. Your final sentence is the problem in a nutshell. It is not being done correctly now. Adding a bigger range will not fix that. The judges handing out +2 and +3s like candy is the whole problem. Now it will just be +4, +5 for their chosen skaters.

How many other skaters do you think have laid down an awesome skate and then sat in the kiss and cry to see they were still behind a less then perfect Evegenia? I wonder how many of them have thought “I did everything that I could!” I know it’s not her fault and she seems sweet and is obviously a good skater but I don’t feel sorry for Evegenia finally falling victim to the system that has benefited her so much the past two years. I was there today and all three of the medalists laid down great skates. But only one in my eyes had it all-Kaitlyn. What a thrilling performance! Alina has really exciting solid jumps-people were audibly gasping by the time she hit her final passes- but is still sloppy and rushed at times and definitely goes blank smiling happy face a bit too much. Evgenia has beautiful flow across the ice and hits the nuances of the music better then Alina but honestly I found her jumps to be scratchy and not very powerful. Neither of the girls should be world record holders. I think it would have taken spectacular meltdowns from both of them for Kaitlyn to be able to have a chance at the gold. Aside of the step out/stumble she really did do it all. A bronze medal she can be really really proud of!

If Evgenia really wanted to win, she should have used Euros as a reality check. Not my preference but she really needed to backload all of her jumps and repeat a lutz, if not add a loop combo. Just backloading would have given her the victory assuming her quality does not suffer because of it. I really don't understand why she ditched the all backloaded program at the start of the year. She was doing fine. Maybe she thought it wasn't needed?.. Anyways, the writing was on the wall unless Alina popped or fell.

I don't know what to say. Still speechless. Two wonderful programmes, deserved two gold medals.

I love Alina and she deserved to be the winner just like Zhenya. But I was surprised by my own reaction, I actually started to cry. Deep inside, I wanted Zhenya to win as she had such a wonderful career and should have had that icing on the cake. Well, at least Eteri's got an early birthday present. Probably the best ever! Well done, girls! :points:

Extra shout to Osmond. That was marvellous as well!

The whole last group was amazing, congratulations to all!!!

It was wonderful that Zagitova managed to skate so well after the team event. Such nerves of steel!!!

I liked Medvedeva´s interpretation, she gave her best job in that here. She must feel so sad, but it will pass and she is still so young for next Olympics.

Most of all I loved Osmond´s performance and interpretation, it was in full blossom at the most important event of figure skating, WOW. Great timing!!!

Feeling sad for Miyahara, she did so well!!!
