2018 Olympic Figure Skating Ladies FS

This was a close competition. I thought Evgenia had it locked up after a perfect performance. I think Alina had an advantage with backloading, which was enough to tie her with Evgenia in the FS. It came down to that lead in the SP. There wasn't any funny judging. Evgenia did all she could, but it was not enough.

Kaetlyn showed she is a warrior and held it together the moment it counted. She now has three medals. A great career.

The American ladies looked exhausted. Mirai says she hit a rut in the ice on the 3A. It's too bad, but she really had nothing to prove after the team event. This was the right team selection. It would not be better with anyone else.

Now that you mention it ... I can't, either. See also: Michelle Kwan, Midori Ito.

This just shows that some of the GOATs aren't necessarily about Olympic Gold. You are GOAT on the long run anyway and thanks to what you bring to the table - certainly not the numbers of gold medals. ;)

I think the judges got the right podium and in the right order, too! It was sad to watch as Eteri, her coach, did not show joy after Zagitova´s scores were announced... Fortunately at least her other coach showed how a coach should react and looked very happy and smiled!!!

Yet they wonder why figure skating isn't popular in the US anymore. Sequin heads! Way to make 'em take the sport seriously, US media. :palmf:

What got me was that we finally got a nightly half hour tv special in the US about Figure Skating and then when I finally got to watch it they spent half the time complaining about the scoring and the sport in general. I’m sure the average joe was like...well if they don’t even like it why should I....click.

And yet she left a dignified, memorable and legendary performance. One that will last in the memory of the Olympics Games. I cannot say the same for the other one. Has she minted her imaginary gold yet?

Nope, because Kim actually has a real gold AND legendary performances that aren't the blueprint for redemption skates. I cannot say the same for your fave. How sad.

(If you're going to dish out snide remarks as you've been doing so throughout this thread, be prepared to take them as well)

Back on topic: any bets on if we'll see entirely backloaded programs for the next quad? Will Med change her layout for Worlds or will Zagitova add Worlds to her sweep?

You know the wonderful thing about Medvedeva is that despite her complete dominance coming into this Games this past 2 years you felt she was still grounded that she could still be beaten. There is no sense of entitlement that just showing up would earn her the gold medal. Of course you cannot say the same for a certain skater who sporadically showed up before the Olympics and expected to be given the gold medal just by backstroking her way to the title.

Oh, you forgot about face-touching this time. Did you forget typing it, or did you think that you've typed that enough times at this point that everyone's tired of reading it?

Re: back-loaded next quad: yes. Her name is Trusova. Although the question is, will it backfire at some point?

How? She would have been 12th with her SB.

I don't know. We can't really tell for sure. I think if anything, Ashley should have been taken over Karen, but due to the 2014 selection (taking Ashley in 4th over Mirai in 3rd), the US committee had no choice. Honestly.

Good that you know. Medvedeva sometimes overdo the miming but at least she is not filling her program with the bare minimum. If someone says its all too busy then your actually doing good but you know its bad when people actually notice why the heck are you flirtatiously caressing your cheek every ten seconds.

Yeah, too bad more people were annoyed by the miming. Shocking. It's almost like they don't agree with you.

Trusova fully backloading a FS? No, no. She hasn't done that all season. She did a 2-5 layout in her last competition - 2 quads on the first half, 7 triples and a 2A on the second.

bye gurlll bye keep on hattiing

So...
If Miyahara's getting 71 PCS, Osmond should not be getting 75 PCS...
Also: this was probably the worst I've seen Alina do this free all season. She missed a couple of musical cues and looked really tentative, which is understandable, but still. Her layback was a bit slow and her last spin kinda got wonked out. if Osmond got -1.5 GOE for her little stepout, then Alina should have gotten -0.5 for the solo lutz. However, the strength and determination to do the combo at the end! and this really is a brilliant free and Alina is absolutely breathtaking to watch. But, I prefer her SP, especially the StSq. Did this StSq change? it looked different, and little odd... I don't know, I would have given her 72 PCS because of the musical cues and the nerves showing through. but Alina did so well in her first Olympics!

Medvedeva, on the other hand, performed the best I've ever seen her do. It was simply thrilling. I would have given her 78-79 PCS and a bit more in her spin GOEs. She's really improved that first spin.
I wrote more in her fanfest, but I'm too emotional to write it here.

Miyahara really was lowballed here, as was Kaori. I guess JSF put all their politicking into the men, which is sad, because these girls were great. Kaori was not 3pts worse than Kostner and at least she had 7 triples as opposed to Kostner. Kostner's PCS is also overwarranted and overscored and Kaori and Satoko don't get enough.

A real shame about Mirai's axel :( Bradie redeemed herself but it was interesting to see URs when she's only URed once all season before. Still, a bit underscored in PCS. Karen.... that was a hot mess. She's lucky to be 11th, in my opinion. And Maria did well, but not well enough :(

also loved: Lil Bet, Hanul Kim, Loena Hendrickx, Kailani Craine

I would have had:
Evgenia
Alina
Miyahara
Osmond
Sakamoto
Choi
Kostner
Sotskova
Tennell

I'm don't really like Miyahara's jumps as much as Osmond's which flies. Personally, I prefers Osmond's jumps over any of the Russian ladies's jumps because their jumps seems so tight and small compared to Osmond's. Her jumps flies across the ice. It's what ladies skating was before Eteri came along.

Every skater has the opportunity to back load their program. But few do because they don't have the stamina. Alina skated very difficult gutsy programs. Her jumps were clean as a whistle in both programs. Technical scores have ALWAYS carried more weight than the artistic scores. The short often is the deciding factor in who wins the Gold as it was this time. Taking all this into consideration, the judges got it right.

Few do it--or did it-- because they and their choreographers had some artistic integrity. How many backloaded programs were there before IJS came into existence? None, because putting all of the jumps in the second half of the program makes it unbalanced and actually, kind of weird. I'm sure a lot of skaters can backload and I expect to see them all in the next quad unless the rules change, which they should.

Still not quite over what happened with Gabby. That was tough to watch, I know she will bounce back strong but that has to hurt :sad21:
