I think the risk was clear as day to the skaters all along. It's only some viewers bent out of shape that Alina kept winning things who kept complaining about the dire possibility that "we're gonna see everyone do this now" when Alina was just superhumanly consistent with this program.

Oh I completely forgot about Kostner.
After Alina's second fall I knew Caro was going it choke it away. Leading after the short + home pressure + last performance + the favourite bombing few minutes earlier is too much for anyone especially for one who is as mentally fragile as Caro is.

I have never been her fan as some of her scores left me baffled over the years (Eurosport commentators also didn't help with hyping her up for 15 years ) but there is no denying her quality. What she has done at this age is astounding. Hopefully this will make other skaters take note. You can compete at the very top as long as you stay focused and continue working.

It's getting interesting now in how Eteri Tudberidze will handle this. I hope it doesn't create a rift in the relationship and that next season Alina can come back with a more balanced program that perhaps does not make her win every competition but will give her room to grow and mature a bit. If she'd won this here, I could imagine her motivation going down to zero. Because what more is there to do? This actually makes me hope we can enjoy her for a few more seasons and see her grow up. Alina is the first female skater I sort of have 'motherly' feelings for. I just want to protect her and see her flourish.

I feel the same! She is the only female skater for whom I threw a gift on the ice! Hope she's doing ok. It was tough to see her heartbroken! She's had a lot of pressure on those tiny shoulders. And I wonder if she missed having Evgenia alongside her.

ETA -- This has been an amazingly supportive crowd, and some of these skaters have really needed it! I would say it's probably the best audience of any competition I've gone to (overall - for all events)

Interestingly the Swedish commentator skater Filip Stiller said that the ISU is looking at backloading and will try to do something about it. He also said that there will be changes to GOE to +/- 5.

Hey I finally got around to watching Wakaba and Kaetlyn and I'm just going to shamelessly quote what I said a few weeks ago RE: some of my favorite programs this quad!

Wakaba Higuchi, "Skyfall" - there's real intensity and personality in this one, makes me believe that she has what it takes to be a Bond girl, to say You may have my number, you can take my name / But you’ll never have my heart. Her feelings are right there with her on top of the ice and she absolutely embraces them. It's just one program but by the end of it I feel like I know her.

I'm so glad Wakaba brought everything she had to offer to the ice today - she really sold me on the sweeping, epic and romantic mystique tones of Skyfall, and the only other program that did that to me this season was V/M's Moulin Rouge. Kaetlyn's Black Swan is less epic yet still very enjoyable and she definitely earned the gold. I'm fond of her brand of artistry and her jumps (alongside Daleman's) are still my favorites in the ladies' field right now (I care less for straight technicals like tanos and Lz+Lo combos but more for the straight up height and speed).

What an emotional roller-coaster! So happy for Wakaba, who was truly the star of the night and got the only resounding standing ovation! Well-deserved! Happy for Satoko too! Bronze after missing half of last season due to injury! The Japanese ladies have their three spots back!! And congratulations to the new World Champion Kaetlyn Osmond! Well-deserved as well!

Sad for Alina. We were all gasping when she fell once, but twice? 3 times? Poor thing. That backloading is a killer when the flow is interrupted. Really felt bad for her. Then Carolina. Just.... Sigh. Must say, the Italians in the arena were very gracious though. Cheers all around, and most people stayed for the medal ceremony.

Kaetlyn was hilarious because she tripped on the rug at the flag side and fell with the Canadian flag wrapped around her. Better there than during the program, so everything is fine! [emoji23]

Evgenia is home getting well so she can continue on her quest for global dominance. Saying she'd win without her skating devalues the medalists here. And yes before anyone says anything I said EXACTLY the same thing in the Dance thread about V/M not being here.

For those bummed for Carolina, remember she still has a small GOLD medal for her sp, nothing to sneeze at for a 31 year old who competed at her 14th Worlds. You can see from her reaction in the KnC that she was okay at the result as I remember reading that she came back for the love of the sport and not the results.

This is objectively a joke. I just scored Kaetlyn very harshly on a spreadsheet and can't get her below 139 (and that's with me not giving the benefit of the doubt on any borderline GOE and giving her PCS all in the low 8s).

Scoring her objectively, I got a 143. Scoring her consistently with how the international panel has been generously scoring everyone, I got 148.

But what did you score Wakaba? I would have had Wakaba higher than Kaetlyn in the FS. Of course, Kaetlyn still first overall, she deserved that 100%.

The final group gave me vertigo, it was such a roller coaster ride!
I'm happy for all the medalists on this most unexpected podium. The real standouts in the free skate for me were WakaWaka and Leona. (Yes, we call her WakaWaka at my house, and we say it like Fozzie Bear. It's totally affectionate.)
As for the US ladies, if we deserve 3 spots, we'll earn them back next year. Congrats to Bradie for her sixth place finish. You go, Cinderella! I hope that your fairy godmother brings you better programs next season.

Overall this competition was a huge splat.. none of the 3 medalists had 2 clean programs. Olympic gold medalist had the biggest splatfest, along with the home favourite and leader (and most accomplished skater here) popping her way to lose the lead she had (8 points!!) to not only not win, but end up off the podium by a couple spots. There always has to be one discipline that is disastrous, hopefully this will mean that mens FS will be great (one can only hope)!
