Medvedeva leaving Eteri

I was sure we would see Alina leave Eteri before we'd see Evgenia leave Eteri. Evgenia has always been the favorite, apparently, and she's leaving????

I don't think anything about her skating would improve by moving to CSKA. She'd be top dog there, but I think we'd be likely to see her jumps and skating decline. Whereas I think Brian and Tracey could help her become a hands-down, inarguable GOAT.

(ETA: I wouldn't be surprised if she's having a Michelle Kwan leaving Frank Carroll moment. She's ready to be more independent and find out what kind of skater she is without the "molding" of the coach she's trained under for so many years. I'm sure she wants to work with different choreographers and train with great skaters who aren't threatening to replace her.)
How? She’s no GOAT material, much less an inarguable one... she was never winning because she was the best skater, but the most consistent skater with the most meaningless transitions and tanos.

If she loves skating, than this year would be the best for her ( Zagitova) to leave Eteri. Zagitova has a charm, a personality, physical abilities... she just need a coach who is willing to develop her style, open her potential and not the one who targets medals for the medals sake. As for Medvedeva...too late... saw Medvedeva, Zagitova and Osmond in their group number in Japan... Medvedeva was the weakest of them for sure... no fluidity, some sort of stiffness... When she skates alone, then her theater/mimics disguises what she is not having as a skater... would be happy to be wrong and see her develop her own genuine style, but I think it is too late.
Not sure what you saw is the same as what I saw. In the solo number in Korea Med did amazing and stunning.

I honestly cannot believe that anyone thinks that the judges will NOT keep Evgenia in mind as a top skater just because she is leaving Eteri. Evgenia earned her reputation alongside Eteri earning her own, basically. Eteri wouldn't have her current reputation without Evgenia, and vice versa. Evgenia was with Eteri when neither of them had any reputation - it's silly to think Evgenia needs Eteri for high PCS.

She'll be the top lady in any rink she's in other than Sambo, and I imagine she would enjoy training with skaters who aren't threatening to replace her
.

I agree. The dilemma as I see it, is finding a coach who can help her "Build" on what she already has. IMO, there are not too many coaches who fit that bill, who don't already have top skaters in their rinks. Personally, I don't care who she goes to as long as she's happy. She's been the face of the Russian ladies until very recently and I'd like to see her back on top.

Tell us where she's going. Come on! You can't leave us hanging.

I don't know who the new coach is. Honestly, I genuinely don't know this bit of info. I can only guess but that's no different from anyone else guessing. If it is any consolation I am dying to know too!

I think Evgenia will be fine, and her PCS will continue to stay high. It's probably hard for her to get as much coaching attention when Eteri coaches almost all the best jumpers in the world, so I could see that being a valid reason to leave. Maybe she finds the diet/fitness regimen too straining at her age. This really was a huge shock for me to read, but I imagine it's a tough situation for that many top skaters being coached by one person.

I wonder if her touring with so many different skaters that have vastly different coaching situations pushed her in this direction.

Why is the Russian community blaming Evgenia? I would think she’s a media darling, since her past victories undeniably helped make Russian ladies competitive the way they are today. What are they saying?
Some people see it as betrayal or like 'sport is business' decision

I wonder if it is more about an 18 year-old girl wanting to spend some time outside of her fish bowl, E.G. Russia. I know she has been working on her English for some time. Best of luck to her! In skating a change of scene is a necessary thing from time to time.

I'm scared this won't end well... even if the training conditions aren't great, Eteri is the best ladies coach in Russia and I'm not sure the Fed will let Evgenia train outside of Russia :sad14: Who can she go to now in Russia that can help her improve?

(tsarina, go to Lambiel! #teamchampery)

This why I think Plushy is her best bet. He's even more popular inside than she is and I think just being around a legend like Plushy would be motivational. She can always bring in a choreographer for her programs. Who is her current choreographer? Is it possible that they will move with Evgenia when she goes to her new rink?

If she wants to train outside Russia, the Russian Fed will let her, I'm sure. Probably their funding will not cover entirely the costs, but she can support the rest from personal earnings.
But now (at least until Monday, when it will be the official announcement) I'm sure that they try to convince her to stay with Eteri.

Russian fans unleashed a wave of hatred against Medvedev long before she left Tutberidze. Most people are focused only on medals. While Medvedeva was winning gold medals, people loved her. When gold won Alina, everyone began to love her. And Medvedeva was considered necessary to kick in every blog and comments. Then she was gone from his coach - just an added reason to speak about her stuff. If in a year Zagitova will not win, but our other athlete will bring a medal - a new medalist will be the queen. And those who yesterday loved Alina will say bad things about her.

In some documentary or interview, I don't exactly remember where, I think Eteri said that it is harder with female skaters after they reach a certain age, because their bodies get ready for 'motherhood'. Maybe it might be that if she has this philosophy, Evgenia's time was just 'up'. She might have not said it like this, but Medvedeva knew. I think, continuing this coaching relationship, keeping Evgenia at the top level, would've been a possibility to show that it is possible to have longevity against that philosophy. Something that seemingly didn't happen with Julia, could've happened with Evgenia. But if Eteri herself doesn't believe in her skaters after they reached adulthood, I can see how it'll become harder to stay.
