Medvedeva leaving Eteri

Someone on Twitter said that she is 19 and 90 lbs!!!! Phil said something about younger skaters doing difficult jumping passes near Evgenia. It seems like it is a very cutthroat, tense atmosphere. I hope she goes to Brian, she will be in a much healthier environment.

As a big Evgenia's fan I feel sad as I inderstand that she had a very stressfull period over the last half a year. And I believe in her wisdom that the big move she is taking is not an emotional one.

On the other hand, rationally after the Olympic outcome staying with Eteri could mean the end of her career. Unbeaten before Medvedeva lost to her team mate who was fresh from juniors. But then all new juniors are coming. And they are even better. Eteri's group is just too strong.

Good luck Zhenya! For me overall you are still the best/

I don't think her score is going to improve under Orser, that's pretty much impossible anyway with her current scores. But she said she wanted to continue with FS, and this move showed she means serious business & is being smart about this.

Going to TCC will not boost her scores, yes, but if she stays with Eteri they would certainly drop. Because her GOE & PCS are pretty much at the mercy of RusFed & Eteri, and Eteri might like her, but RusFed might not much longer. By going to TCC and actually doing something to earn GOE & PCS, she is taking matters into her own hands & not giving the international judges any chance to doom her. In the best case scenario anyway.

Actually the only concern is Rus Nats. Because if the 3rd Russian lady choice this year shows me something, RusFed can do as they well damn please.

Her scores won't improve, and she'll stay in competition this way, but unless quality starts to get rewarded, I'm not sure she'll be in contention. But the recent proposals might help.

I'm torn between being supportive and feeling like we're only going to have another Lipnitskaya on our hands. I think Zhenya is in a far better mental health space than Yulia was when she left Eteri, but at least Yulia had her amazing technical strengths going for her. Zhenya isn't quite so lucky. I know she isn't that old, but what is she going to do? Relearn how to skate? It will take years for her adjust her technique with another coach and be able to perform those elements at the level she's been skating at. Not to mention she only has this upcoming season before all of the tween phenoms go senior. I just can't a scenario where this works in her favorite. Girl sure has guts though.

What about the visa situation? Tursynbaeva still had to go back to Sambo for a few weeks every year...

I hope Evgenia is ok with this, that's all I really care about. She was so dead set on staying with Eteri in that documentary. I know things change, but I'm sure it must affect her. Eteri is obviously not without her flaws, but I think I really did want to see her prove that she is capable of keeping a mature female skater. Just once.

How will the "Eteri only loves Zhenya" crowd deal with this plot twist?

Do you know why Brian is also a good choice for Evghenia? He doesn't push the technical growth when there is no quality base for it. All those teenage girls who could be a hypothetical threat in a season- do they have a great technique to their quads? Umm, I wouldn't say so. Given the new GOE system those who present quality jumps may still win over poor but thicker BV. So... let's wait and see what happens. I can't wait to see what this new system brings, who raises up and who climbs down.

I'm sure they have discussed it though. Orser is very honest with his students, he probably told her what the plan is and what she can expect from it! I think next season will be an adjustment for her.

But it can really hurt her GOEs and PCS. I doubt that Rusfed will say "you can work on your technique and start to be inconsistent, we will save your PCS and GOEs for this season and the next". Though maybe Orser has enough reputation to do that.

I think Orser's reputation will play in her favor. Actually, if he helps her with SS and some of her jumping, with the neo GOE +5 system her GOEs could actually improve.

Maybe Evgenia hopes to learn the 4 sal? She has talked about it in the past I think, and it’s probably her only jump that could potentially turn into a quad to compete with the younger Russian girls. Javier and Yuzuru both have great technique on that jump so TCC could be the right place to learn it. It’s the only way her scores could be improved at this point.

I agree. Her salchow technique is her most decent, so if any jump is going to turn into a quad, it's the salchow. 3A is pretty much impossible anyway for her.

Tech is also spins, and she has great spins :)
That doesn't matter very much. The difference between a Medvedeva spin and a Lipnitskaya spin is maybe 0.25 points.

The difference between Lipnitskaya and Medvedeva is that Lipnitskaya actually lost her jumps due to puberty and had to completely rework her technique. Medvedeva doesn't have such issues. She can skate clean just fine. There are some edge issues but it's not nearly as severe as Lipnitskaya's problems with actually landing her jumps.

Yulia and great technique didn’t go together.

But can still lower than some other Russians.

Her 4S potential is also questionable to me. But her edge jumps are her strength. So if she manages to fix her axel, if a 4S is being discussed, I don't see why 3A isn't. Orser saw something there. I won't lie and say I know what, though.

It's a shocking move because Eteri and Zhenya seemed so close to each other.

But in the end this decision was unavoidable. After that tough season with injury and losing on two big big occasions to her team mate she knows she can't be part of the robot factory anymore. She is like the prototype that gets overtaken by optimised successors. Now or never because the three quad queens are waiting in the wings.

And since Evgenia speaks English and is friend with lots of international skaters maybe she wants to try skating without boot camp atmosphere. Who knows...
