Medvedeva leaving Eteri

So this is the end of my Eteri's Angels of Alina, Evgenia and Polina. Eteri's Angels are no more. :(

I think the pressure to keep with the youngster would have hampered Medvedeva's transition to adulthood as a skater in Eteri's groups. It is a good move, she has nothing to lose at this moment. I really hope is Orser, the international mindset there could do her a lot of good.

How long will that last though? There will come a point where she is going to find herself forced into dealing with someone 18 or over, and she won't have a clue how to treat a mature woman. It is not the same, not in terms of skating, injuries, anything. It is simply not sustainable to have an ever-revolving door; at some point, it has to break.

Everyone has a niche, and Eteri's niche seems to be developing a results factory with a revolving door. (Not saying I agree w/ her methods.) I'm fairly certain that Eteri has complete trust in her own system, and is unconcerned abt the vast reservoir of new talent in a perennially supported sport.

But I guess Eteri doesn't build legacies. It is not a good thing so I hope she comes around and changes her approach because it'll be better for her, in the long run.

No one changes when she is at the height of her success, especially when she is being rewarded handsomely for her actions. Guess which world renowned coach is being supplied w/ an endless line of blue-chip pupils and a brand new rink.

What about the other rumor - Polina leaving Eteri for Buyanova, are there any developments?

For me that is the most exciting question who will be Med's coach in Sambo? Who is working there? I believe Tsareva is out of the question.

I assume that this was just a damage control declaration for the director of Sambo. Or another option is that she will train abroad, but still be enrolled in that club.

I don't think she will change countries. This might enable her to go to Beijing, but, on the other hand, prejudice her career after sports and even endorsements.

It is most likely the truth - from different sources there are confirmations. Conveyor has drawn conclusions from these Olympic Games, and those who don't want to be merged under the next junior.

Eteri has just taken three the zagitova's of the first half of 2006 of year of birth and will purposefully train them for the following OG. Scherbakova, Kostornaya and Trusova it is necessary will prick up the ears.

So first off, I'm not 100% assuming Evgenia is going to Orser, but awaiting confirmation from her, or Brian, or from whoever her new coach is via a reliable journalist. That said, because it is a possibility and because I adore Team Cricket and the CC's denizens I'm going to answer this as if she is going there because I've seen plenty of misinformed opinions about Brian Orser and Team Cricket:

1) Brian does not take on maxed out skaters. According to his friend Doug Haw on TSL Brian has rejected several famous skaters who he felt were maxed out in the past. And he's been right so far according to Haw, since none went on to improve significantly. So people thinking he would take E on just because she's famous or because he's a nice guy I think are mistaken. He may be nice, but he has high standards and wants to focus on an elite group of skaters with potential and who will work together well.

Since I have been following TCC very closely for several years now, I agree completely with this and with the rest of your post. I do not believe BOrser would take Medvedeva just because she's a star and he would be "stupid not to". He turned down many stars over the years, this is not something he would look at during decision making process. If he decides to take her it's because he believes she can improve, which I personally doubt at this point.

I honestly believe Brian will take Wakaba, not Medvedeva. Wakaba is an extreme talent and has lots of room to improve. She also has great technique which Brian appreciates.

Yeah, it did take her a long time. But glad that all of Mao's years of blood, sweat, and tears made you, watching TV from the comfort of your couch, happy for one moment. That really makes it all worthwhile. It did not make me happy to see Mao do a lutz, knowing all the years of struggle and hardship she had to go through for that. Proper technique is important, but very few skaters do all 5 types of triples perfectly, and even Yuna didn't do a loop. All skaters make judgments about what areas they want to improve and what they want to accept.

I can name a ton of skaters who have flawless technique on all their jumps and Yuna is one of them.

Also: Yuna did not do the loop because she had a back injury, not because she was unable to do it so it wasn't exactly her choice. Yuna did the loop when she was a teen and her loop was textbook like all of her jumps.

I also just have to address the lip issue again because it is really annoying - Yuna Kim never ever did a lip. Her flip was actually textbook and the edge call she got in 2013 was incorrect - also discussed many times on this forum by very knowledgable members. A few new members here seem to know very little about correct technique so let me just say that flip should be done on a slight inside edge, not a deep one. If you don't believe me, read the ISU official technique guidelines like I did.

Sorry for the OT.

I celebrate as I assume this means no more Averbukh programs for Evgenia. If she goes to Orser, she could see a real choreographer! Oh, the options! Dickson! Buttle! Bourne! Phillip Mills! Katherine Hill! Mark Pillay! Why, perhaps she might even take a risk and ask someone like Misha Ge or... or...oh, I think she would look beautiful in Joshua's choreography.

Do those familiar with the system think Evgenia and Eteri will directly make a formal annoucement or explain the decision? Or will just hear more news from the Fed, Sambo etc?

Is it also possible that Evgenia made this decision with Eteri’s blessings? After 11 years, it is so sad to see a r/s break down and in my naive world, am hoping that they came to this decison mutually and amicably.

Sooner or later, everyone will understand how Eteri is working and will go away from that school, when starting a senior career, without be her "chosen one" for win the Olympics.

Eteri's method works if the judges keep over-rewarding the younger and fresher skaters out of the batch and do not be patient for them to develop on their own with age.

I just can't imagine it, what on earth happened that she decided to leave? I can't imagine Evghenia with someone else.

Judges have their part of responsibility of letting Alina's PCS skyrocketed. But, without change, Eteri is not doing anything wrong on exploit that possibility, for her own purpose. Just like with all the backloading stuff.

I just don't think she really cares if that is a problem for her other students, that know what she is doing, taking newer students with specific age for make Alina 2.0, 3.0 and so on.

Yeap that's the issue. I do not blame the whole thing on Eteri and her method. Everyone wants to win. And Eteri simply does whatever it takes to win medals. The system is exploited mostly because judges do not keep a cool head and be reasonable. They let themselves be swept away by the psychological tricks and stay biased for political reasons. If the judges said NO and give reasonable scores to young girls in the first place, it wouldn't have been like this.

And it's not just because of Eteri. The judges kept boosting young skaters for many decades. Oksana Bauil and Tara Lipninski for example...

Evgenia herself benefitted from Eteri's methods. The judges went with her when she was the same age as Alina and turned senior. She started in seniors and won it all. But now that she's older and that strategy doesn't work anymore because Alina is taking over it's suddenly not cool anymore? Why is Alina or those who will come after Alina now being thought of as worth less? It's the turn of time, nobody can stand on top forever.

People do not think it's cool or not cool. Everyone has to think for themselves. The point is judges have this tendency to prefer the younger and cast aside the older because they prefer fresher faces. At some point a judge at Nagano 1998 said she picked Tara over Kwan because she "felt" that Tara was fresher.

Now... the question is... do people really want this kind of judging continue? Do they want judges to stay fair and square and give adequate scores based on cool data and objective criteria and whatever they see or base on whatever they feel?

Do they want to see small kids edging out older kids forever? Or do they want to see skaters develop well and all-rounded and be rewarded for that?
