Skaters with consistently good/bad costumes

7 pages in and only one mention of Olga Ryabenko’s brilliance? *clutches pearls*

All of Evgenia’s AK outfits were so pretty. My god the detail on the burgundy one. It even had a matching headpiece.

Yeah sorry, anything that comes with gloves even if they are nude colored, just doesn't do it for me. :sarcasm:

Unpopular opinion: I love Vera Wang’s costumes for Nathan, especially the one for the FS. :scard7:
I love them too - especially the FS one with the white collar :)

I still prefer Nathan's random long sleeve blouse for his FS at the beginning of the season, the loose sleeve accentuates his flow on ice and fits the theme of the program better. I agree the Vera Wang design for his FS is better than the SP ones, but the white collar on black somehow just reminds me of Sound of Music

I think male skaters should be more "conservative" - Patrick Chan and Jeremy Abbott were very well dressed from this point of view, elegance with simplicity. Yuzuru Hanyu's costume in Sochi (SP) was great too.
That's the general feeling I have towards most of the North American men, I feel that they are conformed to the idea of conservatism that fans have on them, in such a way that they are afraid to dress more vibrant with character. This reminds me of one US mainstream media write-up on Nathan leading towards the olympics, that his skating and image represents the rare masculinity of the current men figure skating field. Don't bash me if i didn't remember the exact wording properly, I admitted I didn't read much of the article, I just cringed and moved on, realizing the general norm on men and figure skating is still quite a narrow vision. and it makes me very sad that some skaters might be reluctant to dress a bit differently than the usual plain top with black pants (I'm totally ok though if that's exactly what they prefer :) not saying everyone has to dress up or anything, not all skaters are suitable to dress up anyways. I just wish skaters are free to dress however they like, loud or subtle, without having to worry being labelled certain way.)

With regards to Yuzuru it really depends if you like Johnny Weir's designs. They're not for everyone. Fashion blogger Nick Verreos hasn't always praised Yuzuru for his costume decisions.
I don't think Yuzuru's costume in the last quad was very Johnny Weir at all, perhaps you are thinking more from the pre-sochi cycle? None of his costumes from 14-15 and on reminds me of Johnny, except maybe for Hope & Legacy (last season's FS) I can see an argument there.

If we're talking Cricket Club here's an unpopular opinion: I usually hate Javi's costumes.
I think both of Javi's costumes from this past season are great, I'm especially pleased that he upgraded the look of Man of La Mancha, the original version was too bulky and stiff. The new version was light and flowy on ice. In fact I would say all 3 men on the Olympic podium had great costumes that suit their program very well, each unique in their own way. I like all the versions of Shoma's Turnadot, even that bright yellow one is growing on me too (saw someone with this comment earlier), as long as he doesn't pair it with over-gelled hair

I agree: sometimes they put me in mind of a phrase I once heard about a TV character whose "whole wardrobe was a shrug."

There's a fair amount of cultural bias in what any of us like or dislike, when all's said and done.

The 2010-2014 quad and H&L had Johnny. I'm not sure about the POTO 1.0, Requiem, and Notte Stellata costumes. This quad Yuzuru recycled so much that you didn't really get to see many new costumes or programs.

You can't deny though that Johnny did have an influence on Yuzuru's taste in costumes. I can get why people don't always love them. It's like someone in this thread pointed out - not everyone likes the style of beading Lisa McKinnon does.

Wait 7 pages in and no mention of Carolina’s bright green bedazzled pants suit from this past season?! I mean I know she only wore it once but it truly was one of the most baffling, hideous costumes from any discipline. Perhaps everyone has simply blocked it from their minds 😂

That to me was an automatic 10 point deduction before she even skated lol!

Okay so yeah Hanyu has some flops costume wise (mostly pre Sochi), but he can easily fill all 5 spots in any top 5 list for men's FS costumes just by himself. Notte Stellata, Etude, Chopin, Hope and Legacy, Seimei. Bam, all top tier. Junhwan is also a fashionista and has beautiful costumes. LOVE the ones for The Planets, even if it hardly ever saw the light of day. https://chajunhwanie.tumblr.com/post/163596568598/costume-detail-cha-junhwan-the-planets

It’s actually called the fluffy lettuce salad costume, jeeeez. Get it right!

Ahem, that’s actually just how I refer to it around here. ;)

The thing that pisses me off the most is: Requiem is such an absolutely amazing program. Poignant, heartbreaking, touching, and powerful. So beautiful it could easily make my cry. And if not for the costume, I am sure I would be able to enjoy it like five times more.

I mean, when it comes to Notre Dame or Zigeunerweisen, yeah I kinda hated how they look, especially the later, but I don't love those programs that much anyway, so the costumes are bad, whatever.

But for Requiem, and a far far far lesser extent R&J 13/14, I do think a different costume would make the program so much more enjoyable/beautiful to me, which is why I can never, will never get over how horrendous that cabbage salad/lettuce salad one is.

:slink: that thing is surely disliked by the masculine side

And yes, plushyfan I am. I am also a fan of Emma, Sense and Sensibility and my personal favourite Persuasion. I love Jane Austen. I have written essays on her novels a few times.

Yes, I read every Jane Austen novel what I found in my language. :luv17: And I love the English romance literary style and that era. :)

------------

Didn't you mention Brian Joubert? He had awful costumes all the time!

I like Plushenko's costumes in general, but he is a little bit boring..He wore black! costumes solely for a long time..

I don't watch a lot of the ladies', but I do like what I've seen of Akiko Suzuki's costumes (the peacock one and the Clair de Lune - for an ice show? - are especially lovely) and Rika Hongo's.

With the risk of getting people angry I have to say that if there is one thing I don't like about Yuzuru that is his costumes. It's just my personal taste, I know he had some nice ones but I cannot say they are consistently good. Most of them have too many things going on...too many colours, too many ruffles (I don't know how to call those). Anyway his skating makes me forget about the costume most of the time.

My personal (?!) favourites were the Michael Jackson ones...he started out gold...then went to this snazzy black, white and red number and then to silver and black (which all things considered might have been why he ended up with silver at Salt Lake, it was an omen!)

And not to be forgotten is Bolero with the weird cutouts...what was with that? Still...gotta love it.

I like the Bolero costume so much. I believe the black -white- red was the first MJ costume..
