2018-19 U.S. Men’s figure skating

RIP, Denis Ten. :sad4:

So much well-deserved love and respect for Denis in the outpouring of tributes from grieving skaters of all ages, from all countries, from all disciplines.

As I have been trying to wrap my head around the utter tragedy of his death, extra tears flowed as I read the words of younger U.S. men for whom Denis was a longtime inspiration (emphases added):

I remember watching Denis at 2014 Sochi Olympics and feeling inspired. He was my first idol. The few times I was given the opportunity to share the ice with him, I saw and felt the power he exuded. He inspired many skaters, including myself, and his legacy will live on in future generations to come. Rest In Peace Denis Ten.

@govincentzhou's tweets:
I clearly recall the intensity in his eyes as he warmed up for the 2018 Olympics. I remember being inspired by his breathtaking performances back when I was young. And even before that, I remember watching 2009 LA Worlds in person, feeling the thunderous roar of the crowd [1/3]
giving the 15 year old boy a standing ovation. I was studying his gorgeous skating just last night with no knowledge of what had happened. Denis, your path has not been easy, and though I did not get the chance to know you personally, I feel heavily the loss of an artist [2/3]
leader, and human being. Thank you for all you have contributed to our precious world. May your soul rest in peace. [3/3]
govincentzhou's Instagram post (not identical to his tweeting, although some overlapping thoughts):
The most unbelievable things happen in the blink of an eye. I have been inspired by you for a long time, since I first saw your awe-inspiring performance in person at 2009 Worlds, when you were just 15 and barely known. Since then, you went on to become a World and Olympic medalist who inspired scores of young skaters like me. Just last night I was studying your gorgeous skating with no knowledge of what had happened. Denis, you are a true artist and leader. We love you and will hold your legacy in esteem and remembrance forever. May your soul rest in peace.

Providing inspiration to younger skaters such as Camden and Vincent is an important part of the legacy that Denis leaves behind.
That said, it is by no means the only part. The loss of Denis is heartbreaking in so many ways.

Not related to U.S. Men, but Audrey Weisiger posted photos of Denis remembrances at Toyota Sports Center today:

She happens to have been at TSC for the last few days.

JGP Slovakia entries are up:

23 Ryan DUNK
24 Andrew TORGASHEV
Goku ENDO
Tomoki HIWATASHI
Nicholas HSIEH
Joseph KANG
Max LAKE
Maxim NAUMOV
Camden PULKINEN
Eric SJOBERG
Dinh TRAN
Alex WELLMAN
Jonathan YANG
Paul YEUNG

Dunk and Torgashev are the initial entries, and the rest are subs. As a result of 2018 JWC, we have the right to 1 entry per each competition, but Italy has only 3 total (initial entries + subs). Does that mean we might be able to get away with 2 entries per each event anyway?

Yes. If Italy doesn't use all their spots, then the US is the first in line for them. Italy isn't super deep and with Matteo heading to the GP, they don't have a ton of JGP-eligible skaters left.

So if there's 3 skaters total and both get two spots got six total spots , then 14 (2 entries in 7 events ) -6 = 8. If US takes 1 spot for all events, then Ukraine and Japan are next in line for that extra spot.

I think the US will take advantage of all the spots they can get their hands on. Theoretically, Italy wouldn't want to pit their skaters against each other, so they would most likely give each of their 3 skaters 2 events. That leaves the US with 14(?) entries.

But the maximum number spots the Us can add is 7. If there are 8 spots for grabs there will be one more spot available.

Andrew T. in the first JGP :love: Please be more ready than at Broadmoor

And although he's not US, Donovan Carrillo too:clap: Do next door neighbors count?;)

If the do we need to cheer for Stephen Gogolev of Canada as well. And Aleksa Rakic for that matter, though i have to admit i know less of him than Stephen.

The Ukraine also has two men at the first JGP.

Ukraine earned their second entry because Georgia didn't have a first entry.

a) 2 entries at 7 events
RUS
ITA (only entered 1, so first country in b) gets 2nd entry -- in this case USA)
CAN

b) 1 entry at 7 events
USA (gets 2nd entry thanks to ITA)
UKR (gets 2nd entry thanks to GEO)
JPN (supposedly has a 2nd entry thanks to ISR, but does not use it)

b) 1 entry at 6 events
GER
KOR
GEO (no entries, so UKR gets a 2nd entry)
ISR (no entries, so JPN gets a 2nd entry)

ICYMI in the U.S. Ladies thread, Glacier Falls competitor groups (all disciplines) are here:

Among the Senior Men: Sean Rabbitt, Sebastien Payannet, Daniel Kulenkamp, ...

How are our Men looking this summer? I'm quite interested in the new Seniors? Does Camden plan to stay a Junior. How are Alexei and Andrew looking?

I can only answer one question.☹️ Camden Pulkinen plans to stay junior internationally and go to seniors nationally.
I’m really really hoping for the best for him and Andrew Torgashev.

So it looks like Sean Rabbit managed a 223 at Glacial Falls. This means he has the two highest scores of men from the summer events...can we say he is the front runner for Skate America TBD at this point? I would squeal with glee if he got it.

I'm in the same boat as you. I would be delighted if Sean got the SA TBD; I love seeing fresh faces on the GP circuit! We might have to wait until after Philly Intl. though, where there's Tim Dolensky and (maybe?) Alexander Johnson, who's campaigning for his 2nd spot.

Sean’s IG post was wonderful; he talked about how he wasn’t even eleigible for the ISP until Glacier Falls, as his scores were not high enough, but he hates hearing the word “NO”. I also get the impression he is pretty much self-coached since Tammy left for Colorado, but that could be wrong.

Nothing but respect:rock:

And ... IMO, seems very possible that Jimmy Ma, who will be in Philadelphia, could make a big splash -- so perhaps he would be in the mix as well.
Wishing good luck to all the men there. :yay:

I love Sean, and would be thrilled for him to get Skate America. Would be thrilled for any of the others as well.

First things first: Last year, USFS announced U.S. entries for U.S. Classic as the Philadelphia International was in progress.

Emmanuel Savary is much higher score wise this summer. And how can you not want this guy to make it to Skate America after all these years?

Actually I would be thrilled with Jimmy as well. I really do love Tim, but I kinda hope someone new gets SA this year and I think Sean, Jimmy and Emmanuel are all great choices!
