Watching this made me very happy that HOLDING the spiral positions is something the CoP has reinforced...I think she may have had 3 seconds total in her three spiral positions, and it all looked very rushed and forced.

I'm just a firm believer that if you can't do a move in a way that it looks good (B-mann, catchfoot, donut, spirals, etc) DON'T do it!

I think the sprial sequence should be changed back to having to make a discernible shape on the ice and you get marked down for not doing one. At the moment the skaters are all over the ice trying to yank their skate over their head and change edge and throw their kitchen sink in (to coin a phrase from the eurosport commentators). It would take greater skill to either do the spirals in a circle (no change of edge would be possible there) or in a proper serpentine pattern than to crawl all over the ice hitting ugly positions. At least the basic skating pattern would have to be met.

Things that i realy hate:

Touch the ice with hands and then touching the face
Spiral sequences of skaters who don't have flexibiliti
Egyptian arms and hands

stop with that

(I like a charlotte when done nicely. Johnny Weir's coach Priscilla Hill owned the move. )

Sorry for being naive, but what exactly is a charlotte and does anyone have a picture they can post of it being done (perhaps by Ms. Hill?)

A.K.A Candlestick spiral
Not the best one Sasha has done IMO

Does it count as a Charlotte when her hand touches the ice?;)

You can google but here is a place to look here, I really need to keep working on it - but it is a lonely job.

I don't think the charlotte is an aesthetically pleasing element, but when it is done well or the skater makes it interesting, I like it. Sasha's is impressive because of her split and the tension she keeps throughout the move. Emily's really impresses me because she uses it as an enterance into a spin. I loved Michelle's when she does a backwards spiral into a charlotte. Even when she does it alone, I like that she takes her time getting into position, not just dropping her body quickly and grabbing her ankle.

Anyway, just making it interesting or different from how others have done it makes that move more appealing to me.

I can't see the pic - all I get is a box with a red x in it :(
This was on the New York Times site. I guess they removed it. It was a picture of Michelle and Tara in 1998 during warm-up doing side-by-side spirals.

BTW, this gives me the opportunity to remind everyone to post url rather than img, except for pictures that you have on your own site, like photobucket, etc. The issue is "bandwidth theft."

Here is Michelle's Charlotte.
