Hanyu won the Olympic Gold Medal, but the selection for the World Championship roster requires that the skater compete in Nationals, and the only exception for that is if the skater had a top 3 finish in the previous World Championships, which Hanyu does not have. So I believe that Hanyu is compelled to compete at Nationals if he wants to go to Worlds this year?

The paragraph uses the word "過去" which does not only mean 'the previous' but 'past'. This can cover any of Yuzu's previous podium finishes at world championships.

Jr. national men's competition just concluded!
Congratulations to the following sakters:
1. 壷井 達也 Tatsuya Tsuboi (Total: 222.79, his FS was without miskate and with 2 3A jumps)
2. 佐藤 駿 Shun SATO (Tota: 222.30, FS with 2 4T and 2 3a jumps, winning the FS)
3. 島田 高志郎 Koshiro Shimada (Total: 210.08, too bad about the fall of 4T and a pop of 3A, but winning SP from yesterday)

Sato moved up eight places from tenth in the short!
Congrats to Tatsuya Tsuboi. That's what is called peak at the right moment.
Shun was just 0,79 point away of that gold and junior worlds spot. Fantastic FS but the gap with the first place was too big after the SP. Do your best at senior nats!
What happened to Mitsuki Sumoto? A shame for Kao Miura. Good 4T though.

There will be a fierce competition for the 2nd spot for JWC (though Koshiro has an advantage as he will be in JGPF)
Congrats to Tatsuya for getting the ticket to JWC (after struggles in the beginning of the season).
Handicapping the field for Nationals:
1-10 Shoma Uno: About as close as a lock as one can get right now.
15-1 Yuzuru Hanyu: If he chooses to gimp it out, he might win. But if his only motivation is the 4A as he says, then there is no point in entering this competition at less than 100%.
20-1 Kazuki Tomono: The most potential of the rest of the field, but he has yet to fully show it this season.
25-1 Daisuke Takahashi: Won the West Japan title without a quad, but says he is working on one for Nationals.
40-1 Keiji Tanaka: Looking nothing like the skater he was last year.
100-1 The Field: Hard to imagine anybody else that can mount a serious challenge to the podium, let alone the championship.

Yeah, crazy prediction. But i put Daisuke over Shoma because of this:
1. Shoma looks always tired or nervous at nats.
2. He didn't do so well at the last 3 nats. The 2 nats he won, he won them by losing the SP to Mura. If it was not Mura bombing spectaculary the FS, Shoma could have lost since his free skates were not so good.
3. Daisuke can score well without quads, even if i think he will have at least one quad in FS.
4. Wouldn't be great if Dai finishes his career with a national title?
But i'm 90% sure that Shoma will win....
Keiji always seems to wake up during nats.
Kazuki is too inconsistent, even if he won a GP medal (with a good amount of luck).
It's basically 50%/50% between them.
Sota in top 5 because he is improving and fed loves him.
Shun is my ice on the cake.
But there is other juniors who can be in that top 6.

At this point, I am hoping that Shoma finds an excuse to skip Nationals and rest. There's no joy in watching him stumble through again for a Hanyu-less threepeat and an automatic national team spot that he doesn't need, as both he and Hanyu will be picked for Worlds regardless. Let the rest of the field fight it out in a free-for-all for the Nationals title and the automatic spot.

I didn't have a chance to watch yet - is he injured then?
On a different note, Koshiro looks ready to challenge for the 3rd spot on the Nationals podium, doesn't he? (supposing Hanyu withdraws) And so does Shun.
