Rika Kihira

Here is a HD video of Rika's 2017 Nationals freeskate that was recently uploaded. In case one hasn't noticed. most all of her most viewed performances have been removed, so I was surprised and delighted to see this one uploaded again in such high quality.

I really hope that Rika will be not only clean, but also that judges will reward her technique with generous GOE.
Although I am little bit worried - Russian ladies already had so many competitions this season while for her it's second.

Unfortunately that's the real problem 😥 cause she has all it takes to win it all

Not sure if this is old news but I saw The Skating Lesson just posted Rika's official FS layout:

4S
3A+2T
3Lz
3A
3Lz+3T
3F+Eu+3S
3Lo

If she skates this content clean along with a 3A in the short then surely there's no way she loses? I really want her to be the World Champ especially after she just missed a medal in 2019 (after winning everything that season). Would be an amazing end to the season.

Being clean will obviously be the key thing here, unless others make mistakes as well obviously. Her Nationals performance definitely gives me hope but this will only be her 2nd competition of the season.

I just love that she's really going for it! :cheer:

I am very much looking forward to her skate at the Worlds! :love2: In 2019 she lost the game because of the undue nervousness, but this time I hope she will be mentally and physically ready for the intense competitions against those Russian girls.

If this FS layout is officially finalized, the game will only get more and more interesting and exciting!:bsplit: Good luck, Rika!

I'm also hoping for a gold medal from Rika if she skates clean. After all she has the cleanest technique among the major podium contenders.

Wait, what? She's going to change her original layout at Nationals that much?

For starters, two lutzes? I hope that means her ankle has healed enough to do three lutzes over two programs. Secondly, the flip combo at the very end? She fell on that combination in an ice show once, so I don't know how consistent it is, though she's normally always done her combo on her flip. Thirdly, 3Lz+3T? She hasn't done that combination since 4CC 2019 (I think) when her first 3A wasn't the best, and so changed a 3A+3T,3Lz+2T into a 2A+3T, 3Lz+3T. That's a lot of combinations in the second half. I do hope she pulls it off, but it'll be a nervous time watching her skate.

And what happened to the backloaded 3A...I was hoping to see that...

Apparently the layout they showed was from a 2019 interview and was her plan for the 2019-2020 season prior to her injury that forced her to take out her lutz. Her current layout plan is probably closer to what she did for Nationals, just subbing the first 3A with 3A2T, the 2A3T with 3A, and the last 2A with 3Lz.

Rika is skating last in the SP. It is making me a bit nervous. I know she is a different skater now than she was 2 years ago but will she be able to hold her nerves?

Same feelings here. I actually can't remember an international competition where she didn't make a mistake in either SP or FS...

What makes me more nervours is that there was a lot of sneak peeks with trainings of Russian ladies, but for Rika I saw only one run-through and if I remember correctly 2 out of 3 jumping passes were executed with mistakes.

There were mistakes in all 3 jumping passes, unfortunately. I'm not a fan of skating last because of the long downtime between warm up and actual skate, but some skaters don't seem to have issues with it (Jason Brown, Daria Usacheva).

Yes, but that was her very first practice. She hadn't been on the ice for several days and I believe she had already landed many 3As prior to the run through. She doubled the axel on purpose. So, that run through doesn't bother me. I just think skating last is a big ask when she has only competed once all year. Rika has made great strides as a competitor, but has she gotten that confident? I hope so. On the other hand, It can work in her favor. By rights, if clean she should definitely have a lead over everyone else in the SP due to her superior non-jump elements and her lack of edge issues compared to Sasha, Liza. Trying to hope for the best!

I just realized a layout that would be better for Rika:

4S
3AEu3S
3A
3Lo
2A+3T
3F+3T
3Lz

This way she can do 8 triples and the only double is the 2A. I think it has the highest scoring potential. Has Rika ever tried this layout?
