I remember few months ago her mom commented on ig that they got kicked because of a fight between Margarita and Lena over a yogurt ?

I still wonder what really happened. Being privately coached by Goncharenko could be the right solution for Lena as they seem to be constantly leaving coaches over something to do with other skaters.
The yogurt story is the weirdest thing I heard in a while. I still don’t get what happened and how can a yogurt become such a big issue.

Lena is super talented, it is a shame that her coaching situation is so volatile. I really hope they can find a suitable coaching environment and she would thrive within it.

While I dont know the yogurt story details, it could be the whole "the straw that broke the camel's back" analogy.

I would hope these younger skaters learn from the likes of Tarakanova and to some extent Kostornaia that coach-hopping can ruin a career or a career prospects

Funny. I always thought this one.

Though I sort of associated Sasha, Anna, and Aliona with the sun, moon, and stars respectively, and thought this could be belong to Anna even better.
Anna is the stars… galaxies
Hijo de la Luna is an equal match to the Master and Margarita in story and tragic consequences is why I mentioned it..
Sasha is the Sun of course!!
Thank you for sharing .. never heard of this artist… someone to explore. Has anyone ever skated to her I wonder?

Good post. Except you left the part where:
a) she participates in a sport that is public and has a lot of press and attention focused on it and
b) she CHOOSE to make her private life public with her social media posts. You can get a tattoo and go shopping without telling the world, right?

You can’t have it both ways. You can’t court attention on one hand, and on the other hand say, leave me alone. People want attention on their terms. Doesn’t work like that.

If you post something publicly. you should be able to handle others opinions. Like when I post here, I don’t expect everyone to agree with me.

You can’t say “leave her alone” when she does attention seeking things.

Finally, she is not focusing on her skating. That’s why the coaches started the discussion to begin with.

She chose a highly public sport. She chose to have her athletic performance published and discussed, which is happening. But you‘re turning it into a discussion on her private life, which are entirely different things.

Not that I think it matters - but she also posted neither of the things you claimed she did, fans who saw her at the shopping centre did. The only thing she chose to share were shots from a photo shoot, something all of the girls have done - in the off or on season.

As for "doing attention seeking things"… what, like living and not hibernating in her room on her day off? Or not turning young fans down when they ask her for a picture?

Frankly speaking, the way you think you‘re entitled to speculate about teenage girls' private lives and their feelings on the internet as, presumably, an adult, just because they’re athletes, is pretty weird to me. And it kills me that Daniil either didn‘t know creepy behaviour like that would result from his comments or he simply did not care (people like you are exactly why he should have discussed it with Aliona privately). But it‘s not like I can stop you, so… you do you I guess?

I typed all of that and then I saw *this* post in another thread.

I definitely didn’t criticize her. The people that did and wanted her to quit will never be national and world champions. Anna’s way is the champions way, the champions way will never be the fans’ way. I don’t want to watch the fans skating.

One has medals and accolades and the other side has criticisms. Hmm, guess which side I’m choosing?

And these are 2 different things. Being a responsible person and a competitor. Anna is definitely wise beyond her years. Under any metric. She embodies the best of sports.

But during competition, what’s considered irresponsible by the fans is actually what makes the greats great. She wanted that win so much that she was willing to risk the lives of others. That’s the kind of selfishness that separates the good from the great. I applauded it then and applaud it now. I love that Anna values a gold medal more than my life. Absolutely love it!

Being selfish in sports is an admirable attribute. You are there to crush your opponents not make friends or worry about a pandemic or anything else.

People that want to “play nice” and do it “for fun” and skate to be popular are exactly the kind of opponents Anna will steamroll.

And honestly, after reading that, I‘ll say the nicest thing that comes to mind - which is WTF - and move on. Good day.

I’m definitely on the coaches’ side here. I think that’s obvious.

Age has nothing to do with it. That’s just a convenient excuse to shield someone from legitimate criticism. Her coaches are insinuating certain things about her training habits, not me. She can do whatever she, or anyone wants, in their personal lives. But when the coaches raise a red flag, as followers of the sport, it’s not illegitimate to try to offer opinions as to what is going on.

Whether those opinions are wrong or not.

That’s why there are points and counterpoints.

I was moved more by the fact her fans are so defensive and not arguing the issues at hand.
And it’s not even about her anymore. It’s about athletes in general in a way.

Funny how when others speculate about how “Eteri starves her students, is heartless and throws them out when they are no longer needed” or whatever other slander comes to mind, nobody says stop speculating.

Speculating on anything public is fair game.

And please go back a few months ago when I specifically mentioned that we shouldn’t be speculating about who skaters were or weren’t seeing.

As for that last post, we may have a philosophical difference I think. I said what I needed to say. Some people agree, some don’t. You want different things from sports than I do. I’m just willing to say them out, which is what a lot of people are thinking as well.

Unless you want everyone to just agree with everyone else.

I am cackling - yes that actually happened! Thanks @Fluture, I would have missed this golden post.

In other news, I completely missed that Evgenia @jmedvedevaj reached 1 million followers. Incredible!

on both instagram and tiktok! on the same day! she’s exploding in popularity with ice age, ice shows, commentary, hosting, and fashion.

once she passes plushy on instagram, she’ll be the most followed skater, i believe. and i believe she just became the most followed skater on tiktok with 1.2m, passing amber glenn, who’s been viral a few times.

no practice reports from Daria at NHK?

[snip] ...First, she won Olympic gold by utilizing superior tactics. If she doesn’t backload the program, she doesn’t win. It’s that simple.

This sort of whatifery is meaningless. No, if Alina hadn't backloaded, she would still have won, because Evgeniia would have sneezed during her final spin and splatted on to the ice. If Alina had fallen on her lutz-loop, she would still have won because she would have pulled off a surprise quad that she'd been training secretly. If Alina had stumbled on every jump, she would still have won because so would Evgeniia and everyone else in the competition. If ifs and ans were pots and pans there'd be no need for tinkers.

I’m not using any what ifs here though.
I’m analyzing it exactly as it played out.

The margin of victory was so slim that the backloading was indeed the difference. There are zero what ifs. The bonus points took Alina over the top. It’s a fact.

Whatifery is exactly what this is: "If she doesn’t backload the program, she doesn’t win. It’s that simple."
There's no difference between this and my "analysis" that if Alina had backloaded but had fallen on her first jump in that programme, she wouldn't have won, mutatis mutandis. Or my "analysis" that if Alina had back-loaded and had skated clean in her free, but had fallen on her first jump in her short programme, she wouldn't have won, mutatis mutandis. Or my "analysis" that if Alina had skated exactly as she did do. and so had everyone else from 2nd to 5th (mut. mut.) but Carolina had surprised everyone with a secret quad, Carolina would have won a shock gold.
In your what-if and my what-ifs and an infinite number of other what-ifs, "the margin of victory was so slim that" XYZ "was indeed the difference" that did/did not "take Alina over the top" [XYZ and did/did not according to the particular pointless what-if selected.
Without the mutatis mutandis element, any number and combination of whatiferising ifs and ans is both possible and just white noise. Why would other factors stay the same? and Why wouldn't other factors stay the same?

Can anyone say whether perennially coachless Agneta Latushkina has acquired one this season and whether she has been competing this season? tia

In another world I would love to see Aliona skate to Montserrat Caballe Hijo de la Luna..
Thanks for this opportunity to walk down the memory lane :) For me, the Mecano version is even more Aliona:

(although, if I had to match a skater to the dress in this video, it would have to be Elizaveta!)

Yes, she showed up at the early Russian Cup Stages with Talalaikina's former coach Roman Usatov (from the Rukavicin camp). She didn't do well, she finished 10th and 8th so she's out of Junior Nationals.

Yep (Rukavicin). She competed at the earlier Russian Cup stages. Unfortunately, she didn't do well enough to qualify for Nationals :(

I wonder what Russia will do with the Winter Universiade this time. It is scheduled for 17-20 December, just before Russian Nationals.
Surely, Russia won't send anyone who is busy preparing for Nationals??

Oh shoot. Tuktamysheva has WD from Cup of Austria tomorrow.
As well as Misha and everyone else from their camp. Saw it this morning. She has a fever and several other skaters are not feeling well.

And then I realized they had all been at Skate Canada, and the timeline fits the exposure and development of covid symptoms (if it is covid), meaning they caught whatever it is at SC or during travel.

Well, there are still Tatiana Navka (1.3m), and Alex Plushenko (1.5m), of course. Marin Honda (1m) is not too far behind. I think some months ago Евге́ний (1.1m) had less followers than Евге́ния (1m). Maybe he got some support from his wife. Yana Rudkovskaya (5.9m) has just as many followers as the other five combined. So, the most popular members of the (Russian) figure skating family are probably Sasha an his mum. Should we draw any conclusions from this? …
Yana Rudkovskaya is so Instagram popular! That's the main conclusion, it's astounding. And the 8 yr old outstripping his Olympic champion father is a bit of a lol moment
