I am happy/sad about Rika....if this is a serious orthopedic injury, I fear for her health and well being in the long term if she continues to skate before it heals properly. I watched her epic 2018 NHK Free skate twice the other night....I know this injury must be hurting her mentally and physically. Thinking about you, Rika.....:pray::pray:
From what I read in an online media article (sorry, didn't make a note of the medium, but one of the major news sites, Yahoo or Sponichi or something like that), she has a stress fracture of the ankle bone.

That's concerning. Did they say if it had anything to do with COVID?
No...(if it were for the COVID, she wouldn't be here at Nationals, I think). I suspect it had more to do with the consecutive competitions earlier taking a toll eventually. It's more of a worry for her physical condition of the FS, and one thing she could consider is to have an easier layout (have 3F3T in the 1st half) for FS. That program requires a lot of power plus Kaori's speed to make it work...

Result of Women's SP draw updated in post upthread. Not in skate order.

Rino is in a good position. She seems healthy from her practice and she is the last of the main contenders to skate, with little pressure from expectations now.

Higuchi is the first of the main contenders to skate (first in 4th group). I think she is making a mistake not doing a 3A in the SP. Playing it safe when the judges are against you isnt the way to go.
I disagree. Japan and the JOC prioritizes consistency over high technical difficulty. A clean SP and FS with just one 3A will be much more compelling than a mistake with higher technical difficulty. Plus, Wakaba hasn't done a clean SP and FS with a 3A in each yet this season. With Olympic spots on the line and a 7th place finish at Nats last year, Wakaba needs to play it safe and get on the podium, not go for gold with major risk.

Have you seen the way they score Wakaba when she is clean? She has a very hard time breaking 70 with them. An unclear edge and low PCS are almost guaranteed, not to mention a q on the combo if its close at all. Meanwhile, some others will get away with all of those, if history is any guide. I understand your point, but this isnt a fair "sport", and I think she needs to take some risks here. Valuing consistency over technical difficulty is why Japan consistently loses in big international competitions. Overscoring consistent skaters that can't do 3A or quad, and just one 3/3 in LP only brings disappointment later at World's or Olympics.

Yeah, I saw a blurb giving a more medical term that I should have written down. There are three main bones and seven all together in the ankle.
Ankle bones are called tarsals: these are seven in number.

Explanation:

Seven tarsals are named as:
1 Talus,
1 Calcaneus,
1 Navicular,
1 Cuboid
and 3 Cuneiform.
I had no idea that if given enough time, the human body can re enforce a stress fracture area by itself! But you cant keep repeating what is causing the fratures.

Just making sure this event starts in 2 hours and 40 minutes to make sure I got the time zone correct. It is going to be a late night for me.
