2022 U.S. Nationals: Senior Men's Free Skate

It's going to be Japan vs USA in Men's skating. any of the 6 skaters could medal at the Olympics.

I agree. These two countries are phenomenal with their talent. I actually predict 1 medal for USA and 2 for Japan.

Malinin is a good skater, but people forget that in his only senior international competition in the fall, he didn't come close to his score here, only in the 220's. Bad SP, good FS, but his PCS are in the high 6's/low 7's. Even if he throws all his quads in successfully, that's not going to get his PCS from intl judges up to more than the high 7's, once he's compared to a passel of established international senior men's competitors. Moreover, he doesn't have enough seasoning to give USFS any indicaton as to whether he will melt down or not, once the pressure is on.

Those of you who think Malinin has a ghost of a chance of medalling at the 2022 Olympics are just fooling yourselves. I'd say right now, squeaking into the top 10 is possible--effectively doing a Polina Edmunds--but that's no different from a Jason Brown's chances, and under the upside of an established Vincent and Nathan.

It's so hard because Nathan, Vincent, and Jason all advanced to the GPF and Ilia advanced to the JGPF.

He outjumped them all. I wouldn't say he outskated them all. There's plenty more to skating than jumps.

Look, I think Ilia is an amazing talent, but right now his components are wayyyyyyy behind his technical ability. There's nothing wrong with that development; lord knows the Chinese have perfected it with their Pairs.

But I don't think there's any question that Ilia is the Future Writ Large for the American men.

Correct we should add Malinin's amazing skates (although he did 4Z / 4S / 4T in this competition -- but has done 4F in practice!).

Well, Jimmy repeated as 6th place in a very good field and retains envelope money. Hopefully USFS sends him to 4CCs as he definitely won’t be first alternate to the Olympics now. I’d probably put him as second alternate because he’s been way more consistent than Camden this season. But they didn’t ask for my opinion so…

GPF was Nathan, Vincent and Jason...

I forgot about that. That is remarkable. But, if Hanyu competed, Brown wouldn’t have made it. Also, Ilia won gold at his two Junior events and had the final occurred, and he laid out his quad Arsenal there, he could have surpassed Brown with a higher score internationally.
