No. It’s not a wash. Usually I would agree that all top skaters tend to get favors from the judges and it usually ends up more or less even but NOT here.

Maybe Jason got 4 points total in favors in the scenario you present. Vincent with at least 4 URs in real time (and another Q and UR when I watched in slow motion) legitimately got 15+ points in favors. It’s not comparable.

Believe what you want. Reality is obviously optional.

He does not have the tech minimums for worlds by some ridiculously tiny margin. He could get those at either Olympics or 4CCs. Just don’t make him first alternate because then he might not go to either.

It's so hard because Nathan, Vincent, and Jason all advanced to the GPF and Ilia advanced to the JGPF.

This could be Brown's only saving grace over Malinin -- but even a GPF bronze didn't help Oda get selected over Takahashi in 2018.

He wouldn't have, actually. Someone wrote a (very long, I only skimmed it) statistical analysis of Zhou's jumps. The conclusions were:
1) less than half of all his jumps in competition are rotated
2) he gets gifted underserved qs all over the place.

The question isn't whether to send Brown over Zhou.

It's whether to send Brown over Malinin.

My comments about Brown and Zhou are related to Zhou being placed higher in this event than Brown (after Zhou's less than stellar performance). If Brown had been in 3rd place, the selection for Olys would have been much simpler.

You never know. Ross took the silver and they took the 3rd and 4th place skaters that year.

If Ilia is first alternate and then can´t go to 4CC they probably won´t send him to Bavarian Open to get minimums either because it´s the same weekend.

All though, I believe there are some competitions he could attend after Olympics and in time for Worlds minimums must be reached.

OOOH there's an interesting thought...They can't make Ilia first alternate to World's because he doesn't have the tech minimums yet. They would have to send him to 4CC or the Olympics to get them, but he can't go to 4CC and be first alternate at the Olympics

He hasn't gotten those type of scores because he hasn't skated like that before. The quality of those jumps is undeniable, but we haven't seen it in competition before. I don't think he's delivered a 4 quad performance on the junior circuit, and he certainly couldn't have delivered two SP quads.

Agreed. Some are acting like he’s had a bad season (he did not) and had numerous opportunities to compete as a senior before now. He did not. He’s a junior skater that did well in that circuit, bombed an SP in the senior circuit (an anomaly) and showed he can skate under pressure here at Nationals. Also, he’s on an upward trajectory. I’ve seen his SP performance in August and was not impressed. But that was months ago. At that time, he did not perform that SP like he did yesterday.

Sounds like a guy who shouldn’t be at the Olympics

ISU often calls a q instead of < when they are VERY well hidden. Vincent is very good at hiding them. Some of these were really egregious though and the entire program was so sloppy. To call NOTHING on the first jump and 3S was insane. I have to believe the ISU’s calling would have been stricter than nationals today, putting Vincent below Jason. Otherwise why watch anymore?

I mean damn. that is one long analysis. Although I would have been more impressed if the analyst had a higher GOE on infographics - why not do some prettier tables and graphs - some 3D ones perhaps? just base value for this analysis.
