Probably a lot? It’s an Olympic medal in a sport where Olympic medals are hard to get.

Only if a team have enough chances to win gold or could potentially lose a medal. Most likely USA is locked for 2nd or at worst 3rd, which i don't think is much of a difference again.
I vote the other way around; Jason is not competitive unless there are meltdowns Ilya has a better chance with the quads to be more competitive, and he can see where he stacks up against the other countries young guns and have the offseason to address areas to improve. Worlds after the Olympics are usually a more toned down affair where the heavy hitters skipping out - send Jason to that event he's got a better chance of medaling because the heavy hitters will likely not go.
Also, (although it's not one of the criteria for selection), Jason is a great team member, and I'm sure would be super-supportive of his team mates if selected, which will be a great boon.

One thing I wanted from this National Championship was for someone to break through with a lights-out performance and shake up the status quo. I wanted the selection committee to really have a fight on their hands. It didn't happen in any other event (although I had my hopes after the Pairs SP) until now.

His 4S was clearly underrotated. No international tech specialist would give that a q. Of course Zhou got his carrots too, as did Malinin to some extent (+4s for that final spin which travelled like crazy?! - 9.75 for SS?!).
I also disagree with some of Brown's GOE - for example the +3s on his 3A+2T combo were quite generous, the +4's on Browns 2nd 3A were very generous (which was NOT effortless and a bit of a wild free leg), and +5's on his 3F+3T combo (the 3T was scratchy and lacked usual flow).

Nathan is retiring after the season. Don’t know if he will do worlds or not. Vincent backed off his retirement talk.

As much as I love Jason skating, I find that his time have past now. He already made the Olympic in 2014. If the judge would have want him on the team, they just have to boost his score over Zhou and that's not what happen here. The judge put Zhou over Brown. So basicaly to me, the team should be Nathan Chen, Illia Malinin and Vincent Zhou.
Jason has multiple time to showing progress in the quad jump and he fail and is not able to success quad jump.
I would send the top 3 for the Olympic and think that Illia deserve his place really much over Jason base on his beautiful quad jump and 2nd place overall here.

Nathan has sent out signals that he wants to move on and focus on studies after Beijing, but they are not definitive signals. Vincent, I dunno.

He's had bad SPs but this season his SPs have been rock solid. And usually he delivers in the FS. He certainly did at the last Olympics. Zhou is also really good at comebacks after poor performances. If selected for the Olympics, he will definitely look to redeem his FS here, and if he couples that with his usual SP this season, he might even hit the individual podium.

The only way Vincent isn't on the team is if USFS wants to ignore their own guidelines.

On another forum, someone posted that in 63 competitions, Jason has never finished below 9th. He medaled twice on the GP this year
Ilia still doesn't have SP Worlds minimums from a very unreliable skate at the Warsaw Cup. One bad skate is still one more bad skate than Jason had. The argument for Jason is *precisely* his reliability.
Finishing consistently in the lower half of the top 10 at Worlds is not the kind of reliability that helps the US here

Don't leave him out, but I'm ALL IN on Jason switching to Ice Dance a la Daisuke after this quad is over.

Vincent will be on the team and should be on the team due to the guidelines. He should not have been 3rd here though.. Every jumping pass was UR. There was zero performance. I like Vincent but that score was not ok. Jason should be the bronze medalist.
