Russian Nationals, Jan. 4-7, 2008

Doronina

Just watched Doronina's SP and FS. I think her spins have improved a lot compared to those nightmarish ones last night...

It's kind of funny to hear legendary coach TT scream with excitement whenever a girl nailed a harder triple jump such as flip and lutz. It just shows you the dire situation of Russian laddies skating.

BTW, an extra 2 points were awarded to the SP if a girl nailed a triple flip and triple lutz...

If Doronina and Petushkova score as well at Euros as they did here, they could finish in the top 10. Good luck to both.

I'm surprised K/S beat M/T by 4 points. K/S only made one mistake of doubling a sbs jump, and they were more polished...

Maybe it's true the Russian federation is pushing for K/S over M/T?

I actually believe M/T are a better bet on getting better international results for the next 2-3 years. K/S are just not refined, and they will not score well if they do not skate clean on internaitonal scene.

I don't think Russsian Fed is pushing anyone in this discipline. I think what they are trying to do is to develop rivalry between these two and keep Kawaguchi competing for Russia. In couple of years, those both teams will have really hard time with Bazarova and Ilushechkina likes.

And I thought K/S skated much better and ARE improving, they were miles faster tonight then at their last competition. The refined part will come slowly. I am sure they are not setting high goals like winning Worlds for this season. But next season they should be ready for a fight. Both K/S and M/T.

I can't find K/S' video, but did watch M/T's performance. They were roughly on par with what they had done this season. I still have a hard time believing K/S were able to beat them by 4 points as they made a couple of mistakes since Anna pointed out in the recap.

I bet it would be especially hard for M/T and their coach to swallow the fact K/S' PCS was 1(?) point higher than theirs..

Don't get me wrong, I was actually rooting for K/S to beat M/T.
M/T's coaching is trying to clone another TT/MM, which leaves me completely cold. At least K/S' programs have some interesting & innovative stuff even this team is still pretty rough around the edge.

Well, then it is even more sad that you make the judgement before watching the programs. I am sure there is no point to do so as you "have hard time believing" that K/S could be better. K/S beat them at every competition this season so I am not sure why you can not believe that:(
Besides, PCS of 1 point difference is nothing. Chinese got 10-20 higher with no presentation whatsoever. You have to deliver technical content these days and PCS will come along.

Can you translate what M/T said in the interview?

International judges generally passed on higher PCS to M/T this season...

Trankov said that Weir's program inspired them to choose Otonal. Maria said that she designed costumes. They are working on the difficulty of the programs trying to increase it from competition to competition.

Difficulty? I think the evels of their major elements such as sbs jumps, lifts, throws, twist are already there unless they want to attempt a quad?

Their major problem is choreography. It's just too simplistic, from one element to another, there's very little in-between. The SP is fine, the LP is especially boring.

That is exactly the difficulty part. Kawaguchi got those scores because of higher levels they get for more difficult intricate layout of the elements with difficult entrances and finishes. Even though they do it not clean, they still get the scores just as Chinese do.

Yes. They just started by the way, Efaeva/ Rosliakov got 81.47 for their LP. Now Abdulova/ Stepanov are skating.
