Aliev is struggling with his second quad right now as well. I don´t think he landed a clean quad lutz all season. His best SPs were the ones when he only jumped quad toe and a triple. But then he startet popping the axel :(
We just can’t have nice things, do we? (Crankily) want Aliev back so, so much…

I miss Aliev, too. I still rewatch his performances from Europeans 2020. But even with all his struggles since then, he is still my favorite skater.
I actually keep the full version of Eu gala because it’s the only way to watch his exhibition from that event. 😭

Edit: and now I am thinking about Montreal 2020 again… aww… sad.

Yes, Mark's ex-coah is Sapronova, but he's been with Sokolovskaya for years, she could have done something about his SS. Moreover, Vetlugin, who stayed with Sapronova till this season, has a problem with jumps but not SS. My complaint about Sokolovskaya is that she doesn't seem to be interested in fixing such problems, even if the predate her.

As for Mishin, his approach is "nothing is allowed to interfere with jumps", and transitions do, while performance per se doesn't have to. Although skating skills don't make jumping harder, rather the opposite, but you have to devote time to learning them. But it can't be solely due to him coming from an older generation since other coaches who started coaching before CoP understand the importance of skating skills, e.g. Chebotareva whose students are known for being strong in this area. Muravieva was taught to skate by Chaikovskaya. And it's not like all younger coaches are particularly good at teaching those.
Sokolovskaia doesn't seem to do anything with foundations - if skaters come to her with good basics and technique, they tend to keep them, but if they come to her with weak basics and poor technique then they never really seem to improve these with her; she pretty much takes what's already there and builds on it rather than changing anything. I agree that this can be something of an issue when she's taking students without solid basics, but I think it would do well to look at her as a 'finishing' coach rather than a starting coach. Although again, I'd say the same things about Rukavitsin - he hasn't done a whole lot with Ignatov's SS, to be quite frank, and he came from Oleg Tataurov over at Yubileyny.

Of course, I'm generalising quite a bit with regards to pre-CoP Vs. pst-CoP coaches, and we certainly don't know what truly happens behind the scenes. But I think we can all agree that the likelihood a Mishin suddenly doing doing a 180 and teaching all of his students SS and TR before jumps is about as likely as my dog making me breakfast-in-bed tomorrow morning.

And, as a complete aside for everybody wondering if worlds team will be decided by RCF - no, it will not. Contrary to what the last year has led everybody to believe, RCF is not usually a very significant competition and is not a normal part of the selection criteria for worlds. The whole reason why the skate-off between Medvedeva and Tuktamysheva at the 2019 RCF was such a big deal at the time was because this sort of skate-off had never been done before, and RCF is usually a pretty minor and irrelevant competition (people complained at the time that it was unfair to the B-team skaters who typically had this as their only shot for a podium finish) and while the men's winner that year was also sent to worlds, it had bugger-all to do with the RCF and everything to do with him being 4th at nats and one of the guys above him withdrawing from worlds. The winner's of the RCF the following year were Ignatov and Guliakova, neither of whom were ever going to be considered for the to-be-cancelled world championships (unless one of the men dropped out, in which case, as with Lazukin, Inatov would have had it on the basis of his nats placement and not his RCF placement).

RCF got used as part of the worlds selection criteria last year because there wasn't a normal season, multiple skaters withdrew from or under-performed at nats, RusFed did not get the podiums they wanted at nats and they had no European Championships to weed out the skaters they didn't want to send to worlds like they did with Konstantinova in 2019. It's being used as part of the selection criteria for JWC this year because junior nats was a disaster and RusFed didn't get the results they wanted, plus no JGPFinal to factor into deciding who to send. If it gets factored into seniors, it will only be to check what form Kolyada is in, since he's not competed since nats, and to decide on a third women's spot in the event that one of the women at the Olympics withdraws from worlds for any reason.

Realistically, them men's team for worlds will be Kondratyuk, Semenenko and Kolyada, since Kondratyuk performed well enough in the team event to earn his spot, Semenenko placed well enough in the individual that they should have a shot at keeping three spots with him there, Mozalev sadly under-performed in Beijing enough to loose his spot on the worlds team and Kolyada was 2nd at nationals without anybody else having made a strong case for themselves.

He said it was mental fatigue of skating after feeling that he should be done as in a normal competition.
Thing is...it's pretty much a given that ROC has lost its Team Gold, Mark had all the joy of being an Olympic Champion ripped from his hands. He might be too upset to go to Worlds. 😔 I honestly feel so bad for him.

I know. This gold medal was a once in a lifetime opportunity for him. And he did so well in the team event. :(

But it may be his only chance to ever compete at world championships. We don´t know what will happen next season. But it´s not easy to qualify in Russia. :( I hope, he goes to worlds and will have two great skates to end his great season.

Lol, it's just a word game with their last names in Russian. It's ice cream boi Ilya Yablokov (yabloko = apple) and Ilia Malinin (malina = raspberry). Only there is no raspberry emoji, so strawberry will have to do.
There you go, the first ‘insider’ thing we have to explain about this thread! 🤣

JWC are cancelled, possibly postponed until May

whyyyyy that's the comp I was most looking forward tooo 😭 at least Shun has an extra few months to heal his shoulder? but I wanna see the battle of the Ily(i)as! :tantrum:
I just saw it too. I am hoping it’s postponed, but come on, May? The guys are going to wear themselves out keeping in shape till May… and Russians are likely to dig up like 3-5 extra competitions (Spartakiad? The skate-off in Tmutorakansk? Dance-off from Krondshtadt to Kamchatka?) to make sure everyone is in the tip-top stage of the nervous break-down by then….

Did they call Tallinn? Or Italy?

My thought would be to postpone it to early April/after senior Worlds and give it to Russia or Tallinn or Italy, because they have done a brilliant job of stepping in late. At least everyone has plenty of advance warning and the ISU is determined to make it happen, but I was really looking forward to this event. :(

JWC is my most looked forward event of the year, because I love Juniors so much. I am additionally worried because JWC 2023 is slotted for Calgary where I live, and if they keep cancelling JWCs… atm, i doubt Russian response to any request to step to the plate will be quotable in polite society.

They do have Spartakiad this year, right? Because I am probably going to watch it now, heh.
Yes, they are supposed to have Winter Spartakiad this season. This may sound awfully selfish, but I am a little worried with all that's going on at the moment in the figure skating community that the sport might fall out of favour even in Russia. What if 1tv and other streaming services decide it's not worth it anymore to broadcast all the Cup events and little local competitions? I have grown to love these events so much especially since the start of the pandemic and honestly, if I had to decide between watching a CoR competition or an ISU championship, I'd go with the CoR. I've kind of adopted the Russian skaters, firstly because I was a fan of Plushy and the SPB figure skating school in the early 2000s and kept getting more interested in Russian figure skating from there on, and secondly because they have so much to offer in terms of different styles and qualities. There are so many lovely skaters at the CoR events, both in the senior and junior divisions, who may in all likelihood never make it out of Russia but are still a joy to watch. Hopefully this whole mess will not impact these skaters and we will still be able to cheer for them from all around the world! 💙
