Wow, I don't even know where to begin. The skating in the last two groups was overall very strong, and a lot of the ladies were able to have that exciting Olympic moment at the end of their programs (with the exception of Kamila). Good skates from the non-medalists: Mariah, Gubanova, You, Yelim, Alysa, Wakaba, Kurakova, Loena.
However, by the end of the competition all of that was almost forgotten and overshadowed by all the TT drama. Starting from Kamila's disaster skate and emotional breakdown to Sasha's surprising tantrum and ending with Anna standing alone by herself unsure what to do.
Kamila: Some will think she messed up because of the doping scandal and I'm sure that played a big part, however it seemed like Kamila peaked at Russian nationals and was already declining by Euros and in the team event free skate (she also looked really upset afterwards). Her jump technique is a bit sketchy and she is also probably fighting puberty. I thought having her do both parts of the team event was not only cruel to both her and Anna/Sasha but potentially foolish. All of this led to the mistake filled skate we saw today.
Sasha: Her quad jumping ability is impressive, however she is a very unbalanced skater and she never goes clean. If she can throw down clean 3-5 quad programs combined with a clean SP that is one thing but she almost never does that. At the begging of her hysterical crying and screaming I thought it was because of everything that has happened with her training mate Kamila. When Johnny said that it seemed to be more about her not getting gold, my first thought was is this girl crazy. There is nothing there besides the jumps. She doesn't even pretend to try to perform and most of the program is a jump drill. The step sequence was not one you'd look at nowadays and think "Olympic medalist." Her spins are average at best. Maybe instead of just doing jump, jump, jump she should have worked more on spins, steps, performance... She was gifted her placement in the SP with the underrotated 3A that she fell on. Why does she think doing 5 quads, some of which were messy and one of which was underrotated would automatically equal a gold medal at the Olympics. Not to mention the bad 2A+3T combo. She showed poor sportsmanship. To all those people who say she is young give her a break - should we raise the age limit then because this is too much for them? If they are deemed old enough to compete internationally representing their country at an Olympics they should be able to handle themselves, end of story. If her coaching team truly brainwashed her into thinking all she had to do was standup on 5 quad attempts in a free skate to win gold then I do feel bad for her. However, that expectation was ridiculous when you have Anna and Kamila as team mates.
Anna: I like her, she is not one of my favorite skaters, however I respect her a lot as a person. She always comes off classy, thoughtful, disciplined, and gritty. Given everything that happened, she is an acceptable and deserving OGM. However, because of Kamila's positive drug test I will always wonder if Anna and Sasha have been receiving similar drug regimens. But no doubt Anna is a fighter and great example of hard work beating raw talent (within TT). She was often overlooked by the "stars" around her (Sasha, Aliona, Kamila...) but she just focuses on herself and delivers when it counts most and it has paid off for her time and time again. Sad for her to once again not be able to celebrate her win or have team mates who are happy for her.
Kaori: I respect her so much as a person for her mental strength and for her positive attitude. Lovely to see someone who was at the Olympics already, spend the past 4 years getting better and deliver. I wasn't sure if I loved her free program earlier this season but the subtle message it had here in this environment was PERFECT. She was a women going against girls and rather than let that be a weakness she made it her strength with her speed, power, and maturity. So happy the she was able to win the medal outright today and not post-Olympics.
As a side note, I loved seeing good sportsmanship from skaters of Japan and USA. Wakaba ran up and hugged Kaori after the flower ceremony and Mariah ran up and hugged Alysa after her skate. Those were nice moments, will have to hold on to those and try to forget some of the more depressing moments.
