This was a GREAT competition! We got to see Shoma finally get that World Gold medal...and Vincent who had such a rough time of it at the Olympics (and sadly still hasn't gotten his silver Team medal) come from behind to take the silver...and my goodness, Camden in 4th!!!! But perhaps my favorite moment was vindication for Jason's selection for the Olympic team. I believe Ilia has the potential to grow into a top competitor.--BUT Jason's short score at Nationals was slightly higher than Ilia's at Worlds--and Ilia, after a real struggle in the LP, ended up in 8th, while Jason took 6th at the Olympics. Personally I believe, with the 2 programs Jason has right now he very well might have come in higher than 6th at Worlds--but I'm glad he is taking some well-deserved time off and enjoying his travels. It really bothers me that the minute a young skater has a great performance they are catapulted into the next champion position-- It is too heavy a set of expectations. Alyssa Liu and Star Andrews went through this...Vincent to a degree...certainly Ilia...and I'm reminded of Jason speaking out recently about the toll all the quad commentary took on him. I think it would be much healthier for all if skaters could be cheered on and encouraged, mentored and supported and allowed to grow in their sport before having to carry the weight of labels and unrealistic expectations. Just my opinion...
