Ladies Short Program

Well I watched the ten ladies live (espn 360) and I sure do not agree with the judging at all. This is how I called it.

Asada
Nakano
Kostner
Kim
Meier
Meissner
Rochette
Korpi
Liang
Ando

ESPN360.com now has the 2nd part, skaters 27 through 53 of the short program up. The first part was skaters 1 through 26. It looks like ESPN360 has fixed the aspect ratio problems they had previously. (The ladies don't look pencil thin anymore.)

The programs of the two highest scorers in the 1st part were not particulary memorable. Certainly, there wasn't a Kimmie Meissner at the Torino Olympics in the 1st half of the draw. ;)

After watching both Mao Asada and Carolina Kostner's SP at Worlds, I just don't understand the placement. I thought Mao skated very well. Carolina, takes forever to set up her jumps, which has always bothered me about her skating plus her spins were not as good as Mao's. Personally I think both Mao and Carolina skated with very close to the same speed. If I were judging I would have put Mao ahead of Carolina.

Dizzy

i totally agree with you

I've seen the short programs and Kiira's skate was nothing special. She was slow on her footwork. She kind of ran out of steam at the end and finished slightly behind the music. She skated right after Sarah Meier, who skated flawlessly. It was mystifying to say the least to see Kiira place ahead of Sarah. And Kimmie skated very well. From an aesthetic perspective, I much preferred her program to Korpi's, not that aesthetics matter much anymore.

Totally agree with this. I did see the SP and Kiri was not that good. Overmarked on both scores. Joannie and Sara should be ahead of her and maybe Kimmie too.
Kira's PSCs were way inflated. She looks great though. Really stunning. Maybe she stunned the judges.

The Katarina Witt effect?
Maybe Kiira will save figure skating...

It's up on You Tube. Have a look. Her jumps looked solid. The Eurosport commentators said she nailed her flip. But what the heck, they're only the commentators! I like Kiira, but seeing her right after a flawless Sarah Meier--and then seeing her get a higher score--was jarring.

Yup, Kimmie's jumps looked good. I do wonder why she is planning on tacking on the triple toe in the long program onto the flip as opposed to the lutz, because she is more secure with the lutz. Her spiral sequence was a bit shakier than normal. Other than that she did really well and should be very proud of herself. 9th is very low with a clean skate, but I haven't watched everyone else yet.

I don't see anything off in the scores of anyone compared to the competition. I havn't watched the entire competition as I'm still digging up vids from youtube, but I can see where Carolina placed higher than Mao and Kimmie higher than Bebe and such. If I judged based on my preference, my standings would be slightly different because I prefer one skaters style over anothers, but I can understand the placements, even if they differ from my opinions.
People should stop looking for the cheating. Just because someone have a different preferance dosn't mean their wrong. It's a judged sport. I don't see the judges marking incorrectly or favoring some skaters over others, just there are several placements that I would agree with all based on preference of style, the random draw and the judges on the panel determin this and that's just the nature of judged sport. There's only 5 points between 1st & 8th anyways, it's still anyone's game.

But I was proud of Kimmie for coming back. I really liked her footwork - she made the choreography shine.

This is nice to hear! Kimmie had such a rough end to her regular season I'm glad for her that she did so well. Should be a confidence boost for the long.

I really think Kimmie should have been placed higher. It's weird that ladies that either fell or made an error on a jump placed ahead of her. I hope she comes back stong in the LP and makes a run for the bronze.

OTOH, is it just me or did Mirai Nagasu score the highest ladies SP score this season at JW?

As mentioned in other posts, it's really hard to compare scores from one event to another, I feel that the judges were being fairly conservative with their scores during this competition.

I am about 67% happy with the ladies placements as they stand. If Kimmie Meissner and Mao Asada could just switch positions, I'd be 100% thrilled! Carolina, Yukari and Kimmie are my three favorite ladies right now and to have two of them in podium position right now is so exciting, but it makes me sooooooooooooo nervous at the same time.
I really don't get all the Carolina hating going on (not just here, but at FS boards in general), even with the step-out on the lutz she is still a phenomenal skater with such incredibly good basic skills. Looooooooooove the deep edges and speed on the spiral sequence, and her footwork is so creative and moves nicely across the ice. Her 3-3 is so awesome that I don't even mind the major telegraphing! I love how quickly and tightly she rotates on those jumps.
Yukari was so lovely! Her spins were so fast, and the positions were excellent. I don't love her wrap on the jumps, but its not a huge deal to me. Rotation is the important thing, and she rotated the jumps just fine. Its a shame that she is so often overshadowed by her countrywomen because I think she is the most beautiful skater of the three Japanese ladies here at Worlds.
Mao... I just don't love her skating overall. I totally understand the judges putting her behind Carolina, what with the major flutz and the lack of counting on the spiral positions. No doubt she's a great skater, but Caro deserves the lead at the moment.
I'm a little sad for Yu-Na falling on the lutz. I really like her and want her to do well. That being said... I think 5th place is a bit generous considering that ladies behind her skated clean. However, point-wise, its not a huge difference between her and the next couple ladies so I guess that is what really matters.
Kimmie, YAY for going clean! She played it safe with the 3-2 but I think it was a wise choice in terms of getting her confidence back. She had a lot of energy and attack in this SP, which was great to see. Hope she can come out and fight in the LP and move up a few places!
Those are the only SPs I've watched so far, so I won't comment any further until I have time to see a few more. I'm really looking foward to the LP, it really is anybodys game at this point!

I wish that website that allowed you to see the rank of skaters on each element was still around. Well, it would help for the protocols to be released in a more timely fashion, too.

Lots of complaints about the judging, but I think there's just an immense depth at the top - which is good. I'd like to think they are getting it right on the TES side of things. PCS is a joke.

Regardless, they have GOT to release protocols to the public ASAP. People are forming harsh opinions, perhaps unfair opinions, in the resulting vacuum of information. It's something the sport can ill afford. At the very least, list the scores not as a lump sum TES, but as "jumps," "spins," and "steps." Then we'll all at least be able to get a sense of where some non-obvious but costly mistake was.

I dont get the judging bashing either. I guess its just tradition in figure skating LOL. But if the results are all over the place is becauuse the performances were all over the place too. I mean the big names had errors and they are down in the standings (Yu-Na, Miki) while the B-list girls gave the perfomances of their lives and they got rewarded (Yukari, Kiira). YOu can say one skater should be ahead of another but thats still quite subjective (as everything of FS) and is not like there are huge gaps in the scores, basically everyone in the top 8 can still medal, which says a lot of the quality of this year's ladies IMO.

If that is the case, then Kimmie and Bebe should be placed higher, especially Bebe. The low PCS Bebe got for her program is a complete joke!

Best wishes to Joannie in the long! Hope she can keep it together!

You know who wuz robbed big time? Mira Leung. She has made such big improvements in all areas of her skating. Why do judges make it so hard for her to climb up the ladder when she skates a clean program?! What is keeping her from the others? I don't understand.
