Where have these identifications been reported? On Twitter or on icedance.com by the staff who covered the event? I have been looking, but I wasn't able to find anything. The hosts of This Week in Skating, from FSO and icedance.com, said they would be providing program notes updates, but they haven't gotten around to it yet.

The FDs are concluded already, so that info should be forthcoming too.

Mamma mia! After spending all of last season complaining about my Cypriot kids skating to "It's Tricky", now I have to endure another season listening to it! :drama:

...or maybe not. Once they start competing, Ash and Atl may find that they have to change their Short, because neither song fully fits the wording of the rules:

"The theme selected for the Rhythm Dances for both Junior and Senior for the season 2023/24 is “Music and Feeling of the Eighties”. Any music is possible provided it was originally released in the decade of the 1980s. The couple should demonstrate through dance the culture and feeling/essence of this decade. The selected music may be remastered. The Rhythm Dance should NOT be skated in the style of a Free Dance. The couple must use dance movements and dance holds to interpret the chosen music from this decade."

"Walk This Way" was originally released by Aerosmith on their own in 1975. So, it was definitely not "originally released in the decade of the 1980s". And as such, it is likely to get them a deduction.

"It's Tricky" lives up to it's title because, depending on how you look at it, it may or may not be classed as being "originally released in the decade of the 1980s". It uses the same tune as the 1979 song "Kitty" by Racey, so the tune was definitely not original in the 80's. But the lyrics of "It's Tricky" were completely new. So, if the vocals are included in the programme, it might just pass through without problems.

Nevertheless, knowing the two songs, it should be a really fun programme. So, if they do have to replace it, it could become a great exhibition programme.

Anyway, I'm intrigued by their Free. "Great Balls Of Fire" is the only song in it that I actually know. But, I am so looking forward to seeing the programme, because even if the other songs turn out to be not very exciting, I know that the "Great Balls Of Fire" section will be a lot of fun!

Oh, I wish them all the best for the coming season. They are so likable!

They're using the Aerosmith with Run DMC version of the song, which was released in 1986, so they'll be fine.

Now there are some nice choices among the juniors.

They're using the Aerosmith with Run DMC version of the song, which was released in 1986, so they'll be fine.

But, it's still not the original release of the song. The original release was in 1975.

I know I have argued this extensively in the other thread, but the way this part of the rule is worded is really ambiguous. And the way we are looking at the songs in this programme proves it. We have both read the exact same words, and interpreted them in totally different ways. Ways that are incompatible with each other. That is not a good thing. The requirements need to be crystal clear.

I agree. I think this music would be dinged because it uses a lot of the original Aerosmith riffs. Otherwise, other covers could be used.

Sampling really took off in popular music in the '80s. But if it sources older material, to me that falls within the "cover" range, unfortunately. Only because too much of the original song is used (even a riff, but what a riff!). There's a lot of great music that is out of reach, if reading the rules strictly.

And for those teams that did pick songs in the '80s with no disputes as to release date, they were able to follow the brief.

As much as it pains me to note all this.

IIRC, if you go look into the history of this song and the version that was made popular by Run DMC in the 80s, Tyler and Perry actually went into the studio with Run DMC and re-recorded it. So it's NOT the original from the 70s. Tyler even took on singing certain parts of the song that were adopted in the 80s version from there on out in concerts etc. The Run DMC version of the song actually re-jump started Aerosmith's career and made them popular again.

The skaters using this version will be ok. And if I were to guess, there is a major reason why they are using the Run DMC version as it's 80s and safe. If they used the original w/o the rap then they would be dinged as they should b/c it would be a 70s song.

I would never dispute your credentials. I just have a different interpretation of "what constitutes '80s music" according to the vague guidelines.

Your post mentioned that Tyler went back into the studio and re-recorded it. So, Steven in the '80s was covering himself singing an Aerosmith song from the '70s, to be re-mixed and sampled by Run DMC. It's a (self)cover that was re-recorded then sampled in the '80s. So Tainted Love is out, but this is in? It doesn't seem safe, in that regard. A banger to skate to, perhaps, but not safe.

Ultimately, the judges at upcoming competitions will be the final arbiters of this discussion. I just wouldn't want to place my teams in a position where anything is even more up for debate than ice dance already is.

Like I said before I don't expect teams to actually be punished for these choices, I think they will be fine, but the rule and its wording are unfortunate.

I cannot imagine any rap or sampling being dinged as "not 80s".

As someone who was alive and listening to music in the 70s and 80s (and even before that. :eek2:), no one thinks or thought that rap or hip hop sampling is the "same" song. It is not covering a tune the way that, for example, "The Greatest Love of All", originally sung by George Benson in the 70s, was just plain old re-sung by Whitney Houston in the 80s.

What will the judges think? I don't know. But many of them are probably from my era, no? ;)

Okay, I can't fully get over Gumenniks SP choice. I know he had a show program to Rammstein (but was it this song or another one?) Anyway, Rammstein have made the big headlines here for weeks because there are mass allegations of sexual abuse against them, there are protests against their concerts etc. I would have thought skaters do some research before they pick their music -or don't they? Or does this just not matter? I know that some Rammstein songs actually have lyrics that go the same way, while this song thankfully doesn't. I mean people pick Michael Jackson without a second thought, but I wouldn't have done so in the middle of the actual lawsuits and discussions either. 😵‍💫

that's my baby! 🥲
Oof, I wonder if he got some knowledge of the current Rammstein discussion... I really wouldn't pick that right now... but maybe it hasn't really gotten outside of Germany.
i heard about that on the radio (radiofreccia, a rock radio) i wouldn't have known otherwise

Yeah, I mean I didn't even consider them a very relevant band anymore and didn't know much about them. Of course this doesn't make the headlines in other countries. It's just so confusing, although I don't follow the topic any closer it has been all around here for weeks and months now really, and to then see the song choice... yeah, just wanted to express my confusion I guess.
