I agree Air Farce has never been as funny since John Morgan (the guy who played Mike from Canmore) passed away. Not only was he one of the founding members, he was also one of the writers, and the show just hasn't been the same ever since.
I also agree Rick Mercer is much funnier nowadays and I'm sure he could have come up with a more original idea than the "any young guy interested in figure skating
must be gay" stereotype all skating fans must be sick of seeing by now.
That being said, I thought Jeff came off as a good sport and did a good job with the material he was given, especially since this was a
live show and even the Air Farce regulars have screwed up their lines a few times under this format.
BTW, did anyone catch Rick Mercer right after? He also had a skating joke, this one about Dube and Davison. "Who ordered the skater chick?!" Lol.
I
thought that was Jessica, but I wasn't sure since it flashed by so fast and I couldn't see Bryce in the photo. So thanks for clearing that up!
I loved the Harper wanting him to run for Sudbury in the next election and wanting to be like Kurt Browning - not for 4 world champs but for a diet coke commercial.
IMO, that was the funniest line in the whole skit. :agree:
Only 225,000 Canadians watched Jeff's golden moments, which compares with some 800.000 viewers for Elvis winning his last gold in 1997. This tells you that Canadian figure skating has been on steady decline over the last decade.
Thanks for posting those ratings. I'm disappointed, but not surprised. But don't forget 1997 was in the middle of the boom years for North American skating and Elvis was already a two-time World champion and household name at the time. IIRC, Worlds was also broadcast in prime time in 1997, whereas CBC broadcast this year's men's LP in early afternoon. At least it was a better time slot than midnight, but it's still not a time slot where most casual fans would expect to find skating.
I'm actually pleasantly surprised at all the publicity Jeff's received after his Worlds victory. Not because I don't think he deserves it, but the mainstream Canadian news networks have barely covered skating at all since 2002.
I hope the fact Jeff's getting all this publicity and appearing in non-skating-related TV shows such as this will change that, not only for him, but for the entire Canadian skating team.
