Buttle to appear on Canadian TV show

Great story! Thanks. I was so angry with the media here in BC - there was only a very small article printed in the Province newspaper on Jeff's big win. Instead our stupid media decided to feature hockey (as usual) on the front page. Jeff's story was buried at the back of the sports page.

Great!!!!

Jeff Buttle to be on CBC's sketch comedy show "Air Farce Live" Fri March 28

I just read on Skate Canada's website that Jeff will be on Canada's kind of SNL-like sketch comedy show this Friday. From the SC website...

Jeff Buttle of Smooth Rock Falls, Ont., will appear on “Air Farce Live” to help a young fan overcome “Buttle Mania”.

The sketch will include Craig Lauzon playing the “Buttle obsessed” high school student. The northern Ontario student begins to wear figure skating costumes to school at the protest of his mother and high school principal who want him to become a miner. Buttle makes a visit to the student to help with the situation.

The show airs LIVE Friday, March 28 at 8:00 PM (EST) on CBC.

Should be rather entertaining... Jeff on live sketch comedy tv... and the synopsis of the sketch sounds pretty fun.

Only 225,000 Canadians watched Jeff's golden moments, which compares with some 800.000 viewers for Elvis winning his last gold in 1997. This tells you that Canadian figure skating has been on steady decline over the last decade.

I am so glad that I don't see any many SUVs flagging Senators' as last year. It was an eye sore. I just don't understand that a stupid physical fight in Quebec's junior hockey team made it to the Nationals as a major news, whereas Jeff' winning Worlds was aired in a 30 second at the tail end of the news. The Nationals last night was geared towards a bunch of hockey hosers.

I can. It was because of the viciousness of it *and* the fact it looks like the coach told the goalie to go down and beat the crap out of the other team's goalie. Combine that w/the fact it's Patrick Roy and his son and...I can understand it being all over the place. They both should have been kicked out of hockey period for that. I also hope they end up getting charged w/whatever it falls under in the Criminal Code.

I do believe fighting has a place in hockey, but that crossed the line and then some.

Jeff should stick with skating. For some people, learning a quad could be much easier than doing a comedy live.

Yeah, but it was Air Farce. It hasn't been funny for years and the new additions haven't helped. It should have been off the air long ago.

Pity Jeff didn't go on Rick Mercer Report. I know why, but it would have been a better fit.

No, I don't think Rick would have teased Jeff. Rick's got great respect for our athletes, but they would have come up w/something ten times better than what the Air Farce group came up w/.

I love Air Farce, always have, but I agree that the original material was the best. BTW, did anyone catch Rick Mercer right after? He also had a skating joke, this one about Dube and Davison. "Who ordered the skater chick?!" Lol.

I had my back turned at that portion of it, but I'm burning it to DVD right now to show my parents Rick on the kiteskis and then racing on the velodrome in London. The kiteskiiing thing....I was laughing so hard, I was crying. Considering I've had a sore throat for the last three days and I was croaking rather than speaking today....Might not have been the best thing in the world.

I didn't think it was that bad. Jeff was a bit awkward at points but you could tell he was having fun. I loved the Harper wanting him to run for Sudbury in the next election and wanting to be like Kurt Browning - not for 4 world champs but for a diet coke commercial.

I agree Air Farce has never been as funny since John Morgan (the guy who played Mike from Canmore) passed away. Not only was he one of the founding members, he was also one of the writers, and the show just hasn't been the same ever since. :frown:

I also agree Rick Mercer is much funnier nowadays and I'm sure he could have come up with a more original idea than the "any young guy interested in figure skating must be gay" stereotype all skating fans must be sick of seeing by now. :rolleye:

That being said, I thought Jeff came off as a good sport and did a good job with the material he was given, especially since this was a live show and even the Air Farce regulars have screwed up their lines a few times under this format.

BTW, did anyone catch Rick Mercer right after? He also had a skating joke, this one about Dube and Davison. "Who ordered the skater chick?!" Lol.

I thought that was Jessica, but I wasn't sure since it flashed by so fast and I couldn't see Bryce in the photo. So thanks for clearing that up!

I loved the Harper wanting him to run for Sudbury in the next election and wanting to be like Kurt Browning - not for 4 world champs but for a diet coke commercial.

IMO, that was the funniest line in the whole skit. :agree:

Thanks for posting those ratings. I'm disappointed, but not surprised. But don't forget 1997 was in the middle of the boom years for North American skating and Elvis was already a two-time World champion and household name at the time. IIRC, Worlds was also broadcast in prime time in 1997, whereas CBC broadcast this year's men's LP in early afternoon. At least it was a better time slot than midnight, but it's still not a time slot where most casual fans would expect to find skating.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised at all the publicity Jeff's received after his Worlds victory. Not because I don't think he deserves it, but the mainstream Canadian news networks have barely covered skating at all since 2002.

I hope the fact Jeff's getting all this publicity and appearing in non-skating-related TV shows such as this will change that, not only for him, but for the entire Canadian skating team.

But don't forget that Skate Canada has a new person in charge of PR/Marketing. Unlike after Torino when I felt Skate Canada missed the boat w/Jeff's Bronze and Marie-France and Patrice's hard luck story followed by a silver at Worlds and using that to promote the heck out the sport. Instead, I'm seeing Jeff every where and I'm willing to bet we hear more of all three of our World Medalists, w/Jeff leading the way the next few months.

At least I hope so. Debbi Wilkes was given three wonderful reasons to promote the sport last week. She'd better use them and use them well to get skating back into the public eye.

Thanks! I hope I did not miss it. After 15 years the Royal Air Farce show is going to be cancelled. I just heard the news this morning.

I hate to say it, because I used to be such a huge fan, but it's about time. It really was on the air about five or six years too long.

On the other hand, it is just sad to see one of the iconic Canadian shows disappearing. Right after I landed in Canada, I made a point of watching Air Farce and Red Green Shows to familarise myself with the Canadian culture. For me, it will be one less thing I can identify with the country.

Jeff Buttle is going to be on the CBC show The Hour on Thursday April 3rd. This is a late night interview type show - should be good!
