What did you think of kimmie?

I guess the fundamental question is: How long does a skater continue to improve? Some skaters peak at a young age, then fade. Others slowly improve over time, like Joannie. And some peak, fade, peak, fade etc. We just don't know which category Kimmie fits in.

Of course, we could do a more detailed analysis if we knew WHY Kimmie is faltering, but we don't have access to that information.

At the age of 25, Jeff improved dramatically from 4CC to Worlds with the newly discovered consistency.

Once Rachel grows a little I think she will fill out, she seems like she has that body type. That might give her more problems with her jumps than either Zhang or Nagasu, although the latter two certainly have their work cut out for them as well.

Right now, the most "filled out" high level skater we have is Katrina Hacker. But she seems to have simply increased her strength to rotate her added weight. That girl has seen the inside of a gym, and I have read reports Caroline is trying to strengthen up as well.

Ugh... I don't think one clean competition makes Jeff consistent. Let me put it this way, if I had to put my money on anybody winning Olympic gold, it would be Joubert. To me consistent is also staying at a similar level year in and year out. Anyone can have the competition of their live, at one point in time. It's whole different ball game to do it multiple times.

Yeah, I know.... But being extremely consistent in his practices going into the worlds seemed to be a big factor for his victory. I am only hoping that this new consistency is not short-term and will hold in the next seasons to come.

So back to the topic, I think that Kimmie can do it, too. Just seeing Jeff and Miki would make her feel hopeful.

Agree with your analysis. But I don't think Kim at her best can even beat Mao or Yuna with a mistake, even two. And Wagner, she's kind of a wildcard. Showed great potential at TEB/Nats, then bombed worlds. I think we will continue to see these sorts of erratic patterns because of the demands of the new scoring system. Even Asada and Kim are not consistent performers. I think the days of cranking out stopper after stopper have come to an end.

Ashley is 16/17 years old, it was her first worlds, and she was coming in as the highest ranked american skater out of nationals... she did better in so many ways than she had right to!

And? I don't think Ashley has "it." Sure it's her first worlds and all, but she's the same age just about as Mao and Yu-na, and I believe there is only a year/two year difference between her and Meissner.

Just want to say that I saw Kimmie at SOI last night and she was absolutely darling! Anyone who says she skates like a junior, that she has horrible presentation, etc... has never really watched her! She's really a lovely skater, very fast with quiet blades, and she really PERFORMED her number, making eye contact with the audience, smiling the whole time. I enjoyed her far more than I did Sasha Cohen.

Meissner has definitely improved her presentation, but she still can't touch the pro skaters IMHO.

(Of course, this is without seeing her live. If she comes to my stop later this week I guess we'll find out for sure)

Slightly off topic. I attended the Champions on Ice presentation in April, 2006 in Hartford, CT. Kimmie was there as well as Johnny, Evan, Tanith, Ben, Sasha, Michelle and several medalists from the Olympics 2 months earlier. Kimmie had been world champion for about a month. I thought they all put on a nice show, but that was before I started being critical of what I see.

There were severe photographic restrictions in effect, so I had to smuggle in a 105mm lens which was not really adequate. I got some fairly good shots that evening, but Kimmie spent most of her time at the other end of the rink.

I really like Kimmie. She is a sweet girl with plenty of talent. Sometimes I think she is a bit hyped up for being the "All-American" type of girl that has been missing from US figure skating lately (Michelle Kwan, etc. and now Mirai and Caroline), and with that look... people want Sasha Cohen, which Kimmie certainly is not. I would love to see her put in one more competitive season and do her best. But in all honesty, I would be very disappointed if she sacrificed college, etc. to continue to pursue skating through the upcoming Olympics or beyond. She has amazing achievements behind her... a World Championship, Nationals, top 10 at the Olympics. That is a DREAM for most skaters. But in reality, Kimmie will never be the next Michelle Kwan or Sasha Cohen for the US or world. If she has a solid next season, I think she should stop skating competitively and pursue other things in life. I'm sure there are plenty of doors open for her, and it would be a shame to see her miss those opportunities to keep on skating just for the sake of it when the upcoming skaters will be at their prime come next Worlds and Olys.

Also, don't forget that Mao and Yu-Na are only one year younger than Kimmie and both have survived puberty and are continuing to skate beautifully and maintaining their jumps.

Kimmie is Kimmie, she doesnt need to be the next Kwan and even less the next Cohen, who never managed to win a world championship!!!:disapp: besides, Kwan and Cohen never landed a 3 axel or a 3lutz-3toe combo. Kimmie's got a rough year, but she's a fighter and will come back, she wont give up.

But, sadly, I have to feel in a way it's been a rough TWO years. Her 2006-2007 season wasn't plagued by the falls, I don't think, but she still finished off the podium at Worlds as the defending champion. That's gotta sting. And, instead of rebounding, she finished even lower this season. So I see it as a longer slump than one bad season, which to me makes a comeback maybe less likely, though not impossible. It all depends on how much she still loves the skating itself and likes the competition, I suppose.

I think she has already had a wonderful career-the type of success that most skaters only dream of. Olympics, Worlds, Junior Worlds.
But I think it is over.
I think she lacks the natural athletic ability to compensate for her new size. While the rest of her skating is 'nice' it is not at the same level as those at the top. When she was 15 and 16 it was her jumping ability that kept her on top. I would say that Ashely has more of a chance to move up, because Ashley gets nice air on her jumps.
She is a cute girl with a cute personality, but she ought to seriously consider moving on to new phases in her life and skating career.

Right. Although her intentions were/are noble, her coaches and parents should have said, i.e. Kool Kids, do for the kids what you can, give them some of your time, but for heavens sake don't launch a foundation yet. You've got a lot of skating to learn.

I think I will do a 180 and say that she wouldn't be too bad in the show skating business either, if the competition no longer works out. I mean, she will always be introduced as a World and National Champion and people will respond to that. Plus she has become a surprisingly watchable skater. Not the case even a year and a half ago.

I think people forget how much she has managed to achieve in the two years she was successful. The only thing she is missing is an Olympic medal, but given the increased competition nationally, that's going to be an uphill battle at best. Maybe if she can dig deep inside and find "the old Kimmie" then I'll say she has a shot. But I'll be surprised if she ends up being one of our two Ladies at LA worlds.

That didn't happen in 2005 Worlds. Jeff and Evan beat out Brian.
and now Jeff has beaten him again in 2008. It's not what happend last time out. It's what happens that night!

Or deservedly won a single Grand Prix event.

Huh? I'd say she totally deserved her Skate America win this past season. No, she wasn't perfect, but nobody else was, either, and I thought she was the clear winner. Who would you have had ahead of her?

Okay I was in Gothenburg and felt that Kimmie did really well. With her jumps I think the main problem she has is height. She was finishing her jumps really close to the ice. Before her weight gain she didn't need to put as much force into her jumps to get the height she required to rotate the jumps in. So now she needs relearn how high she needs to jump and how much force to put into. I don't think this is too great a problem because her weight gain looks like mostly muscle mass.
