Is it true that there was talk that Jeff should have been off the team?

I am a bit surprised to read this.

Then last December, Jeff fell at the nationals, and there was talk, he should be off the team.

Is it true? Although he was beaten by Patrick at the Nationals, he beat the bronze medalist Sawyer by a large margin. His ISU ranking and his GP series performances were also much better than Sawyer. So I am a bit surprised to read this. Is it really true that Canadian Fed was considering dropping him off the team? Or is this just the media manipulation that tried to make the story more dramatic?

First I"ve heard of it. If true it was thought of, guess they're glad now that he stayed on!!

Jeff Buttle did have a bad GP season by his standards. But still, he was better on the GP ( by quite some margin) than every other Canadian male save Patrick Chan.

I doubt there was talk about not sending Buttle. Although it certainly makes the article seem more dramatic.

I rather doubt the veracity of this as well. Who else would they have really wanted to send in his place? Even before his worlds win, Jeff was still by far the most internationally recognized Canadian male skater, with the best international results, barring Chan. Now if Chan had had a bad Canadian championship and finished below second, I could understand some talk about a way to get Chan on the team regardless. But that didn't happen. Chan and Buttle sitting one and two in some order was ideal for the Canadian team. Further, as a well-known face, Buttle was able to take a bunch of pressure off Chan at his first worlds.

Thank you guys for your insights. I now feel that it would have been just a way to sell the story. The host of this show (The Hour) also suggests as if Jeff had not been a medal contender going into the previous Olympics whereas he actually got the Silver at Worlds the previous year and placed second at GPF of the Olympic season. Jeff was of course way too nice and too humble to correct him though. Anyway, this is not a skating show so that it is understandable that they haven't followed the sport closely and information was not very credible. Nonetheless I appreciated watching a long interview of Jeff like this. He seems to be really humble and have great sportmanship.

As far as I know, there was no talk of it. Why would SC try to get rid of its top competitor when their up and comer has only had a couple of good seasons? Hell, it would be better for ticket sales and bringing new skaters to the sport to have this new rivalry between 'young' and 'old'.

I know people 'in the know' and Jeff was and still is SC's darling. They adore him. I actually heard he had voiced his dislike (I don't know in what context) of someone who was running some section of SC and at the end of the skating season he had made the comments, said person was removed from their position. SC adores him and I'm sure would love for him to stay around as long as he can and wants.

This show appeared to me to be pretty casual in tones compared to the greatest respect some of the Japanese skaters like Shizuka received in the Japanese TV shows (they'd prepare a huge bunch of flowers and wouldn't take the gold medal away from your neck and examine it on their hands). But perhaps it may be more to do with the cultural differences. I liked this show as it is despite the incorrect information about his earlier achievements and his treatments by the fed. The host appears to be a nice guy.

BTW, Jeff was so cute when he had an awkward laughter after a moment of silence when the host said easier said than done (i.e., to go into the next olympics after having gained greater confidence by this success and becoming even stronger).

great source for news articles....................

I never heard of such a possibility

Just sayin' the reporter might be able to claim "legitimacy" in using this to make the story more dramatic. Who knows, maybe they even read it on the forums.

Maybe:laugh: According to this reporter, "Jeff Buttle heard that talk but he didn't listen." Bringing Buttle himself would be the best way to claim the "legitimacy" although this appears to me to be going a bit too far.;) According to this guy, "no one was watching for him" before, either.

It's also kind of interesting when the guy asked a "loaded question" about the fed and ended up getting responses that are all about his greatest appreciation of the invaluable support that he's gotten from these organizations and how fortunate he feels he's been. They seem to have had their own agendas that do not necessarily seem to have fitted into Jeff's experience.

Anyway, I think it was such a good show despite these.
