2008-2009 Programs by Discipline

NOT happy about Lysacek's music choices. I can see it now: "Bolero" with lots of arm-flinging, and little in the way of seductiveness and sensuality. And Lysacek's wild jumping technique does not exactly mesh with the subtlety of "Rhapsody in Blue".

Seems to me both these pieces were used in the past by Russian skaters; the Gershwin piece was Kulik's OGM winner. Leave it to Tarasova to stick with the TIRED and true.

I agree, Bolero and Rhapsody in Blue are both pieces that many people still associate with T/D and Ilia Kulik. I mean, they were their Gold medal winning programs! Nothing against Lysacek, but he's no Ilia Kulik.

From another board.

Evan Lysacek

SP: "Bolero" Ravel

LP: "Rhapsody in Blue" Gershwin

I am very happy with these choices. Yes, Bolero is a little bit on the dramatic opera side, but at least he isn't keeping Tosca. I think both will bring out diffrent, but good sides of Evan. I can't wait to see these programs!

I'm really excited about Rhapsody in Blue! I know Ilia owns that music, but it's been more than ten years, and Evan will definitely bring something new.

Who the hell picks Evan music?

As much as I love Rhapsody in Blue,

Evan is the King of Overused Music. SERIOUSLY! What's next...Swan Lake!?

I think Rhapsody in Blue is a good choice! I don't think Ilia Kulik 'owned' the music so much that no one should ever skate to it again. I wouldn't mind seeing Evan skate to it I think it's a better choice than Tosca last season.

As for Bolero, it probably only works for dance teams. I've never seen free skaters skate a good Bolero. I mean, how does someone really choreograph an effective free skate with repetitive, military march sort of music?

I don't think so...Swan Lake hasn't been that overused by guys. Who used it besides Galindo and Urmanov? I'm drawing a blank here.

Klimkin's QR was a masterpiece but he withdrew because of an injury.

The 4th Act is all about the Evil Owl defending his right to effect the curse of the Prince vowing his love for Odile. It's Tschaikowsky at his musical best, imo. The showdown between the Prince and the Owl leading to the glorious ending of the story.

I suppose that Tarasova has chosen the music as she is doing the choreography. I don´t think that either of them is overused music for male skaters and neither can that be said of Swan Lake. I think these music choices are excellent, especially as both are different types of music.

I seem to be in a minority, but I don't think there is such a thing as overused music. If music is good - and he always has great music - why not use it if it fits and works? These are for competition after all, chosen with specific goals in mind.

His EX music has been cutting edge and different. I suspect he picks his own music for those.

Evan has said he leaves the choice of music to the choreographer and in this case was going to put himself totally in TT's hands. While I'm sure he has input if it doesn't work for him, for the most part he leaves the choices up to his team and puts his energy into perfecting what is designed for him. Frankly each skater brings his/her own interpretation to the music and makes it uniquely their own.

He asked her for something really different this year. Maybe the music doesn't seem different, but it's sure that what he will bring to it will be. Keep in mind, too, that he toured with Kulik on Stars on Ice and that Ilia passed along some training tips while they were on the road.

I can't wait to see the results of both of these.

Didn't Oda do something with it last season? Oh wait, it was a hip hop Tosca he did, not Swan Lake. I too am drawing a blank here.

So true. Ilia skated well to the music and won the OMG with it, but his interpretation leaves plenty of room for improvement. Evan will use this music very well i think. Almost every popular music has been done already by a "big name" but Ilia's skate was 10 years ago +.... and it is not like it has not been used since then.

Bolero is very tough to skate to. Even dancers have difficulty with it... other than T&D or course. I think Evan could really make it work, unlike Michelle or Plushenko.

Also, the repetitive nature of "Bolero" won't be as problematic in an SP as in a FS. (Seriously, though, can't Evan choose music that Michelle has never used? Or, do "Lyra" and get it over with?)

as someone else has said - he doesn't really pick the music... though he doesn't tend to shoot it down either (though IIRC he was the one who wanted to skate to Grease lol)

Hmmm, interesting choices. Two brand new styles for Evan, which are VERY different from what he did before. He seems to be very determined to make a change and keep improving his artistry. I'm curious to see what he and TT can bring to the table next season.

A Techno Bolero would be awesome!

Any news about V/M, D/W, B/A, Dom/Shab's music yet? Aren't their trainings open to public? I'm surprised there's even no rumor spreading around.

Also wonder what Daisuke and Tomas will come up with for their LP, I love their SP from last season.
