To be fair that was meant to be a double axel and he singled it. It wasn't a huge loss of points.

Yes, true. He had already done two clean 3As at that point, I forgot.
I've just seen Illia's FS. The 4A was huge and amazing, and the rest of the jumps were ok. But the program is still incredibly boring.
I don't know, maybe because of all the comments here saying how this was a historic performance and how much Illia had improved skating / performing wise, I was expecting something truly great. But the reality is Illia continues to basically just skate in circles between jumps, only now he waves his arms around a lot more, but in a very disjointed / monotonous way that is not appealing at all. And still, he could have skated to any music, or even to no music at all, it wouldn't have made any difference
Also I was quite surprised by how slow he was, especially in the first half.
His jumping content as amazing as it may be, sadly is just not enough to make for an interesting performance or an attractive program that you would like to rewatch more than once.
As I said, maybe I just had too many expectations for his skate after browsing this thread, so the deception was bigger...

I need to rewatch the competition from the beginning because I missed Adam and the first group.OMG, I jokingly said in group 1 that we could stop the competition because no one was going to touch Adam's technical score. I then had to leave home for another event and couldn't watch any skating for six hours. Just came back home, and boy, was I wrong!!!What an astonishing skate by Ilia. Wow!!! The crazy thing is that this isn't even the limit for him. I'm just in awe.
And Adam maintained his position for bronze! Hahahaha, wow!!!

He had to get surgery after Europeans (I believe it was for his hips) which requires several months to heal and recover.

Yeah, my mom jumped up and told me that everyone should stand while Ilya was still going through his step sequence!
Anyway, the free was going rather sadly after Adam, but Ilya really saved the day. Kagiyama had an almost clean skate, but Ilya just has nerves of steel. We were sitting on the side where he was jumping 4A and he was right in front of us. It was the cleanest 4A I have seen him do live so far. His jumps are so amazing. Like, I know, technically Yuma has gorgeous edges. He landed a 3A in front of us in the short, and it was a beauty, but how Malinin does them, just wow.
From the other of the skaters I love watching, Miura is just amazing at the whole power skating and energy thing.
And Lukas B was great. Second time seeing Memola and he looks funny with Uno and Kagiyama, towering over the regular height skaters. Heh. The arena almost looks too small when he jumps. Really wish he wasn’t the only guy in his size, because it is darn impressive.
Yeah, I am sad Uno stayed off the podium, but it wasn’t really a good day for anyone but Malinin, tbh. I mean, even the guys without quads made mistakes.

I stayed up last night to watch the men because I couldn´t resist, but I was to tired to stay here and live chat. I went to bed at 3 am, but it was worth it because what a event.
Here are some thoughts:
Adam was one of the biggest highlights with his monster clean skate and even took the chance of reduction in points with the back flip, I guess at that point he thought he did not have a chance to medal so there was nothing to lose. I thought to myself he was going to regret that if he was to miss the podium with 2 points... Lucky he did not do it but I wonder if he would have done it again if he knew his score was big enough to win a bronze.
Yuma is just a joy to watch, I´m happy he was able to do such a clean skate and get the silver.
My jaw dropped by the skate Ilia pulled out. Nobody knew if he was going to throw out the quad axel but he did and with such great GOE. The fact that it´s so stable now, so well rotated and with such good quality is insane, remember we even discussed if someone would be even able to get the full credit and that people thought it would be impossible to do a clean quad axel without UR. Then he just followed with the other quads with great quality, and ending with insane combos. I was in shock when he finished, and so was everybody else, including Ilia. The reactions were priceless and it was such a magical moment to witness everybody losing their mind, including Mark and the female commentator. His TES was so insane I could not belive it, and I felt sure a WR was incoming.
I see people complain about Ilias PCS score, but considering the monster TES he got off 137, and that a couple of other skaters got better PCS (rightly so), I do not think the judges got carried away with the PCS of 90. The difference between TES and PCS is huge, has there even been such a gap? Remember when Nathan pulled off the other WR in OG he got over 97 in PCS, which is almost maximum. All though Nathan should have higher PCS, he has better skating skills and all, his program was also so concentrated and loaded with the big jumps that it didn´t allow much to balance the program like others (for example Jason). This is of course natural when you are going for such a technical concentrated program, the program will somehow suffer a little on the other aspects. I think Nathan deserved over 90 in PCS, but maybe not 97, so I think during that time, the judges got a little carried away. So it´s was nice to see that judges here not giving Ilia something free because of the huge TES.
However, I understand why people react because of Shomas PCS. But my opinion is that Ilia wasn´t overscored, Shoma was maybe underscored! Honestly i´m surprised that he got a PCS score under 90, since he won Worlds last year, I was expecting the judges not to mark him that low. Was the mistakes enough to bring down his PCS that much? I have seen worse skate not getting so much affected by this, I do think the judges could still have given him 90, which is still less then the 93 he got last year even with mistake. I also question this because I thought Shoma would be able to take maybe the bronze because the PCS would be higher. Not that i´m not happy about Adams bronze, I am, but I thought the judges were going to give it to Shoma. So I have to say i´m surprised by the judging, but in a good way.
I would also like to mention how incredible it is for Jason to come back with such good programs and place top 5 with little time to train and almost no competitions and spending so much time on tour. He truly is incredible and deserves the good placement

Wow I just finished watching the Men's FS on replay. Congratulations to Ilia! That was an amazing display of
athleticism and grit, my jaw dropped, well deserved Gold Medal win for him!
Yuma's FS was magical, he is back in form
and so much talent. I was very happy for him that he had two great skates! What can I say about Adam the comeback kid, amazing skills,
determination and athleticism to win the Bronze!
Shoma, Shoma, it was not your night and off the podium. He did win the small medal Gold for his beautiful SP so he did get a medal
but not the one I wanted for him.

Congrats to Adam who made history and jumped from 19th to the podium. He was technically extremely solid and I liked how committed and determined he was throughout the whole performance. The backflip was just very gutsy to do in that situation, and the crowd loved it!
Yuma seems to be the next forever silver medalist after Shoma. He is the most well rounded skater in this field, who skates very nicely. But if Ilia keeps skating like this (big if) the next two seasons, then Yuma won't have many chances to stand on the top of the podium at the biggest events. It reminds me a bit of Yuzu vs Nathan. The judges favor jumps over overall quality which is a shame really.
Ilia's technical achievement is something else, but there's still not much between his jumps and he skates slow. He randomly makes hand gestures but it has nothing to do with having great performance skills. I always say when a skater makes a lot of hand movements, they want to distract from the lack of footwork. And it's true for Ilia. I'd hope he could still improve, but why would he work on these aspects much if he gets world record scores anyway?

I've already seen such comments around five years ago when Nathan Chen won gold medals, but he didn't make skating popular anywhere, not even in the US even after he became an Olympic champion. There are so many reasons why the popularity of skating has declined in the US, and a skater like Ilia won't make any big changes imho. His 4A didn't even go viral when he landed it in the past season, Adam's backflip was actually more popular on Tiktok and other social media platforms. People around the world want to see complete skaters, not just jumpers, but this was already discussed so many times before.

I love Shoma, but that was a terrible skate. He was definitely not underscored.
I am not a fan of people thumbing their noses at the judges. I think the penalty for blatant disregard for the rules should be higher. Of course, I don’t get why people go crazy over the backflip.
Shoma had one major mistake and several smaller ones, and therefore his PCS shouldn't get higher than 8.75 in any components. He still got 88, so he wasn't underscored at all. To be fair, he had many other better free programs in the past and he had mistakes today so this 88 points is actually quite high for such a performance.
It's Ilia who is given already 90+ points for weaker skills and performance qualities, even if he skates clean. PCS are attached to tech content, fed politicking, and nationality too much. What scores will he get next season, as a world champion? 93-94? No thanks.
