Skaters are already given separate medals for the short and long program.

Yes, but these medals aren't given with the formal national anthem, and public presentation, but rather at the banquet (?) or some other skaters-and-choaches-only event. I think that Miss. Schneider would like to see skaters receive separate medals of "equal value" in front of the public so that the audience could get to know more skaters, and then maybe an overall one, which would be the equivalent of what we have now.

Personnally, I'm not sure I'd like this system. For skaters who are much stronger in one part than the other, it could be nice, but then again I don't have a strong opinion either way. I'd just prefer to see skaters compete in both parts, however. As for a team event... that could be interesting.

I think skaters should be able to do both programs but get medals in both and all around.
EX: at worlds, Mao would get 2 silvers for short and long but a gold for overall. Carolina would get a gold and bronze but a silver for overall. Yu-Na would get a gold for the long and a bronze overall. I can't think of who got 3rd in the short.......but she would get a bronze for the short.(was it yukari???)

In some ways, this would be more like gymnastics. Maybe for the team part all the medals, short, long, and overall, would be added up and the country with the most medals would win the team title across all disciplines.

I agree with that. Also I think there should be some events in the year (not worlds though) where skaters can choose to just do one program (either the short or the long) and compete for a gold for the U.S.

for example we could have Marai do a Freeskate, Caroline do her SP and Kimmie do her Long. They could be up against Mao's LP, Miki's SP and Yukuri's LP.

I was wondering about this. Watching the summer Olympics & seeing Michael Phelps win a trillion medals. I wonder how fair it is for some sports to give so many medals to one person & then, only allow one medal per discipline in FS.

There could be medals for longest scratch spin, layback spin. or even fastest spins in combination.

Personally, I don't like the idea of multiple medals and I would not want to see that their meaning is emphasized more than it used to. At the end, short and long programme are basically the same, one does not have to specialize to be better in one than in another. It is completely different than in swimming, when you have to be good in different styles and different distances. Short and long programme require the same skills. I guess that I would rather give medals for the best jumper, spinner, for the best steps and the most memorable choreography (artistics). But I would not overemphasize the value of these small medals either.

Beach Volleyball and indoor Volleyball is another sport like FS where only one medal is awarded.

So it would be akin to having individual events champions and an all around

I think it's an interesting idea.

I'd like to see some additional events. For example, for no reason that I can see, we now have team diving (and boy was there too much of it in the Olympics) and diving at different heights and on board and platform.

For skating, how about having a figures medal again?

How about a top jump medal, like the competition they had in Germany some time ago?

Or use the SP as a qualifying for a ton of teams and skaters and then have a team medal in singles (top 3 competitors) count, and then as a result, top 10 in an individual final with the LP?

How about a OD dance medal, if we have to drop compulsories (as we are told we have to do)? And then use the OD placings to qualify people to the CD/FD competition , similar to the way gymnastics uses the qualifying competition to place contestants in the event finals and all around finals.

It would take some of the horrible pressure off the skaters if there were more than one gold medal they could win.

I like the idea of multiple medals. It's not as if there would be 12+ medals, diluting the entire point. There would be the chance to provide a moment of celebration for each events' effort. How many times have we seen somebody deal so well with the distinct stress of performing incredibly well under the unique stress and constraints of a compulsory or a short program, then not have a longer free dance or free skate come through? While the distinctions may be less obvious than in the 70s (when Trixie Schuba would have won the gold she truly 'ran away from the field with' - compulsories, and Janet :Lynn would have been able to truly be, the World Free Skating champion that she was, with all the attendant recognition...?)

I'm not sure individual awards for just elements - jumps, spins, makes sense, as this might tend to engender specialists to an extent that this beloved sport and art form would find IMO detrimental.... but I am all for finding a way to elevate the achievements and success of athletes in more ways that one.

After all, it's not like this is a sport like tennis... where they have tournaments throughout a lengthy season, or 4 major Grand Prix events per year.... there is but one major national and world championship. Let there be distinctions which celebrate the best in all its ways!!

Multiple Medals

Why not have a team skating event? This would combine all disciplines. Every routine would count.

There would be one skater/team for the Short/Original program per country in all four disciplines.

For the US, as an example, you might have in Ladies' Kimmie Meissner in the SP and Mirai Nagasu in the LP. For the men, there would be Evan Lycasek in the SP and Johnny Weir in the LP. The same format would apply to Pairs and Dance; different teams for the SP/Original and Long/Free programs. One up-One count.

While I don't like the idea of separate "official" medals for long and short, how about a medal for the highest combined technical and highest combined components score?

right. winning 8 in one event for phelps is amazing. To win one in a lifetime is amazing for a skater.
