2025 Worlds: Info and pre-game chat

just curious if anyone else here volunteered at worlds before? would love to know your experience. :)
I volunteered for Boston Worlds 2016 as a city transportation advisor first at the Westin Copley Hotel (the skaters official hotel) then at the Garden information desk just outside the Arena.
So many memories!! Many of which I shared from time to time here in GS pages. One I will repeat, just because..
At the Arena we gave out paper copies of starting order just prior to events; of course Yuzaru was skating and the run at the desk was unreal.. like a tsunami. One guy ran up to me and grabbed a sheet.. he was BIG, football type guy with black curly hair and was wearing a headband with Winnie-the-Poo ears .. I shouted at him as he passed “You wouldn’t be a Yuzaru fan by any chance?!” He gave me a big smile and thumbs up 👍🏼
Skating fans are loud crazy and wonderful. Met lots of skaters everywhere too (though we were not allowed to initiate contact, many came up to us just to chat)..
GS membership helped a bit too; after the FD two Canadian women asked about music one team used. I looked it up for them from GS’s music thread in the Edge!

that is so cool. i'm not going to lie, i'm pretty nervous as i'm helping with event flow, so on the competition floor helping skaters get from one place to the next whether its on/off the ice, kiss and cry, warm up space etc. basically movement of the athletes for the competition events. excited but a big job!

I believe Ice Coverage here on this forum has alot of experience volunteering at events...I have pics of her telling top Japanese skaters that they cant get off the practice ice at her gate and pointing to another gate. LOL! She is wonderful. I would be star struck but you might send her a PM for an tips...

Yeah, I would like stories too...like how many seat credits do they now give you for how much volunteering. Personally, If a person puts in the hours, I would let them sit in any empty seat seven or more rows up and of course give up THAT seat if a real owner comes along. Also, when I am king, I would let them sit in the creds only section. Just sayin'
BTW, you can vote me in for King here at the CoyoteChris for king website! Our slogan, we care about the environment, figure skating and the people we serve.

I know that macy already has tons of experience as a volunteer -- I doubt there is anything I can tell her that she does not already know.
Boston also will be my first time volunteering specifically at Worlds, and I think I understand what macy means. I too am assigned to Event Flow, and feel an extra sense of responsibility because it is Worlds. As macy described, Event Flow entails a mix of duties that will keep us on our toes, plus Worlds shifts are six+ hours, which is longer than at other events. The anticipation is different from when I know that I will be "just" ice monitoring for "just" a three- or four-hour shift at "just" Nats. Going into Worlds, a combination of a lot of excitement and some nerves for me as well.
In addition: At Four Continents in 2019 and 2023, ISU definitely had its own personnel overseeing volunteers (on top of USFS/LOC oversight). ISU wants certain things done a certain way (sometimes not the way that volunteers at Nats or even Skate America are accustomed to), and if anything, I expect ISU oversight to be even greater at Worlds.

... how many seat credits do they now give you for how much volunteering. ...

I do not want to get into details, but by my standards (which are not as extravagant as yours), the volunteer perks for Worlds are on the generous side.
ETA:
Wait ... I hope I did not come across the wrong way. I truly believe that the primary motivation for most volunteer participation is the gratification of supporting the skaters/the event/the sport. Any perks are nice, but they are gravy. :)

You are a great person. You will do fine. and you deserve perks. And I wont share any pics of you telling Japanese skaters where to go at Four conts 2019.:wink: Mums the word. But it WAS funny to watch!

I’m not finding them great at releasing information. I feel like I’m always searching for answers. It’s a bit frustrating. I’m pretty sure we had this info by now at last year’s Worlds.
I don't think it is any later than normal. Even if it was, I would be inclined to cut them a bit of slack given what USFS and SCoB have been dealing with recently.

The initial practice groups are organised by country, based on ISU regulations. If you really want to, you can find the relevant regulations and work out the likely groups. The later practice and warm up groups for each programme won't have been finalised yet because they are based on WR and it is still possible for substitutions to be made.

Yes, it would be surprisingly early if the practice groups document already were published, I would say. For example:

For 2024 Montreal Worlds, the first day of practice was March 18, and the practice groups document was dated March 13.
On March 12, 2024, Doris posted that she did not yet have a link to the practice groups document.

For 2023 Saitama Worlds, the first day of practice was March 20, and the practice groups document was dated March 17.
On March 17, 2023, Doris posted the link.

For 2025 Boston Worlds, the first day of practice will be March 25, and today is only March 15. :)

There will be signs and you will quickly learn the backstage layout.
I was on the volunteer committee (as I am again). Mostly checking in volunteers but also I floated to fill in other places - I did some hospitality directing people at hotel & putting together baskets, a short stint at food table at practice rink (keeping an eye on it as well as people who had access), volunteer check in. I filled in checking credentials for an athlete only area during a break - I think that was worlds. I’ve also volunteered at nationals and a skate america.

I’m a former volunteer coordinator (& certified volunteer administrator) though not for skating events.

ETA: I had a longer reply but lost half of it! Shorter version lol—
* volunteer chair is different this time. There is a weird mix of ISU, USFS, & LOC things involved with worlds so it’s not exactly like other events. Luckily we don’t have to know all of that bc they do a good job of filtering into process behind the scenes. The orientation was more thorough than at other events - which I appreciated.
* be flexible & ask questions if you’re not sure of anything w your role
* training is in the middle of actually running the event so may seem hectic. At other events there has been some shift overlap but not sure here. Most other volunteers & staff have been great and helpful in my experience
* don’t talk to skaters, coaches, etc unless part of your job. Your time as volunteer is different than fan and they’re doing a job. It is fun to people watch though!
