2025 Worlds: Info and pre-game chat

For the disciplines that I like the most (womens and pairs) I have a habit of waiting for results and then watching because nerves get to me. I have no idea how I will handle watching it live.. For dance and mens, I can watch live because I'm not necessarily attached to any one skater winning unless they are Canadian tbh.

Just a silly question - what is your, guys, strategy to deal with nerves (yes, you are reading it right :) !) while watching your favourites?
I've got many many skaters who I genuinely like and root for them but who I can watch skate at the major comps like the upcoming Worlds with excitement which would not go beyond normal level of excitement if you know what I mean.
But there is another group of skaters that managed to get so deep into my heart that it brings up almost physical pain to watch them. At the Worlds it will be Adam Siao Him Fa in men singles , Niina Petrokina in women and 2 pairs team - Alisa/Misha and Minerva/Nikita (conflict of interest here is an extra complication), dance I don't follow thank God.
I almost feel like I won't be able to watch them live for the fear of heart attack!
What do you do? Do you wait for the results and then dare to watch? Or read the comp thread first? I'd be interested to know!
I watch them (the ones I'm most invested in) skate before knowing the results and it's very nerve wrecking. I usually keep my fingers crossed and hold my breath when they skate.
I'm most nervous about Amber Glenn. For men I'm invested in Yuma and Junhwan, Minerva/Nikita for pairs.
I'm also nervous for the US pair teams.

For once, I'm kinda relieved I can't watch most of the event live due to the horrid time difference. I think most of my favourites will not win or even be on the podium this year; but that's OK. As Tutto says, I just want them to have clean-ish skates and perform as best they can on that day.

I don´t think it´s a silly question at all. As fan, we get particular engaged in some skaters that we follow and support. It´s natural when we become big fans, that we get nervous on their behalf when they are skating at such big stage. We want them to do well so strongly.

I get how you feel about getting really nervous - I´m lucky because I normally only feel that nervous when watching Mia. My heart is literally pounding at times because I get so nervous. And I had it the same way when Sondre skated a few years ago, he and Anne Line was the reason I got into skating in the first place. I watched them closely during their career, and I have been following Mia closely since she was a fresh junior doing her first JGP and I watched her barely being able to land a 3S to become one of the strongest all time skaters in Norway. That is the thing though, as she has succeeded, also expectations grows. That sounds weird, because I´m surely don´t want to put expectations on her, but I just want her to do well because I know also what she is capable off. Particular this year i´m probably going to be extra nervous because it´s a possible Olympic spot at stake and I know it´s a big goal of hers.

Somehow, you get more emotional attached to some skaters. For me personally, I just power through it and watch the whole competition from beginning to end, because I really like to watch all skaters, and I try my best to enjoy the other skaters no matter of that one isolated skate. I have been lucky in that regards that Mia has been skating in the early groups, so there hasn´t been much room for me to be nervous for a long time, and I have been able to enjoy the competition afterwards usually, unless I get very sad on her behalf like at JWorlds last year. Sometimes I remind myself that this is just one competition, and try to think about that she achieved so much regardless. When they succeed though, is such a great feeling, I still have Mias clean SP from Worlds last year in my mind, and same with her FS at Euros this year. It was such a great feeling despite being nervous. I try to focus on that and just enjoy the skating.

I understand though that is more difficult for you when it´s not one particular skater, but more skaters you feel that about in the last groups. I´m surely glad I don´t feel so nervous for possible medal contenders and can just simply enjoy the rest of the field. Because there is a lot of skaters I like and want to do well, without having the same emotional attachment.

The weird thing is - i´m a huge fan of Reitan/Majorov as well, but the two seasons i have been watching them I rarely get nervous for them. I just feel they are going to do well and they usually do. Maybe it´s because they still are such a fresh team and my expectations are low. I´m surely going to enjoy their performance this year and I don´t think i´m going to be nervous. I have zero expectations that they are going to make the final this year because of the number and level of teams. Therefor if there is twizzle mistake or a step out it doens´t really matter. They did great at Euros, they did well at Worlds last season, they had a magical season. I´m just happy for their season regardless.
Surely, I think this is going to change in the next years as the team gets better and expectations get higher...

Btw, I have a feeling that Adam will do well. I watched his performances from Sonja Henie Trophy, and he looks to be in a good place. Maybe that can help a little.

if it wasn't mentioned already they changed the plushie policy and are allowing them now! it's on the ISU worlds instagram story but i think it only had a couple hours until expiration.
Yes. A whole 3 of them. So glad I’m not going. Truly.

It is getting exciting as each day passes. I am kind of looking at the overall countries and I guess the team event for the Olympics. I see USA as the odds on favourite for gold they have such depth in ladies and are likely to win two gold medals out of the four events maybe even 3 right now in the crazy lady's event. I guess they could win bronze in pairs. Then again they could be out of the top ten too. But they are the only team that really has 4 strong events or at least a minimum of top ten. Then you have Japan which could win three gold medals but no dance really. Italy and France have strong teams both lacking in ladies though. Italy may be stronger right now having more talent than France in Dance, Pairs and Ladies. France is really all over the place for men with injuries and MH issues. Georgia maybe next but I could have missed someone. Korea Oh I forgot Canada. Canada's big issue is their singles skating. 4 long years since Keegan Messing and they have not produced a top ten skater in men or women.

I'm so excited for my first worlds. I arrive Monday so hoping to get a little touristy time before spending every day at td garden. If anyone sees a brunette woman wearing a Canadian hat that is me!
Have fun. Last Worlds, we went to the aquarium which we loved. Also went to Salem, which is fascinating, but requires a car. My sister liked it so much we went back again after Workds. We were quite a pair. I miss her.

Anastasia and Luke seems to have lost their luggage. I´m really hoping this will solve quickly  I see they got a reply directly on X so i´m hoping this will help get it quickly:

I was just thinking about yesterday about lost luggage and how stressful that would be right now when it´s not only Worlds but Olympic spots at play :eek2:

I remember Keegan’s luggage going missing. He strapped on a white pair of skates and started reeling off quads in practice. Fortunately his luggage was located before the competition.

On a sadder note, a nationals competitor came through St Louis on her way to the comp. Her skates were stolen from her car while she was in the arch. I don’t think they were ever recovered.

I doubt Ellie and Danny will be out of the top 10. I’d be very sad if that were to happen.

I never want to see the results first. That would be awful.

If I’m there for some reason it helps calm me if I film the performance with my phone. It’s like putting a barrier between me and the skater.

Having had to mop tears with a (clean) sock borrowed from a lovely GSer, I now make sure I have a box of tissues available.

At home sometimes I peek through my fingers.

And these are absolutely real people. And in many cases people who recognize me. Gracie knows who I am (it helps to bring flowers every time). On the other hand Michael Solonoski recognized me later after meeting him once at a Meet and Greet. I mean I am unforgettable but sheesh.

Anyway I watch other sports, but this is the sport I love most because I do meet and talk with these people and have genuine feelings for them and want them to do well.
I have conversations with some on IG. That’s not going to happen with football or even gymnastics.

I can't imagine purposely waiting for the competition to be over before watching the skates. I like the fun and excitement of not knowing what's gonna happen. If a comp happens during my nighttime hours, I'll be careful to watch the replays (or the parts I have time for) before I look at the GS headlines or any headlines.

I find I get the most enjoyment by (when I can) watching the whole competition, or all but the first group, or all but the first two groups, if my time and schedule don't permit the whole. I think the reasons are that I see so many different aspects of skating that way. Also, I notice the reactions of skaters that come at the end of their skates (and I celebrate with them), not after the scores. That helps me see my favorites in a more balanced way.

I'm not really answering your question directly, I realize that. But I find that looking at the bigger picture helps me focus less on the result.... even though by "result" I don't mean the placement. It helps me to remember that I like the competition because it helps bring out the best in the skaters, but what I really am here for are the emotions, the storytelling, the artistry, and the skills and athleticism.

Also, particularly when I'm watching live, at the beginning of my favorites' skates, I'll often breathe a phrase of encouragement to them... something like "you can do this" or whatever. The breathing helps .... I recently heard that taking four deep breaths resets your nervous system.

Ana has posted a story on instagram that she is at the airport waiting for her suitcase. And that she is happy to get her skates back...and her contact lenses 😅
As a Brit with Dundee connections, I've been anxious for Ana...

This evening I went to a show about ghosts from an Edinburgh comedienne, where one of her skits was a story of a trip to Boston where her luggage and contact lenses were lost... spooky!

I was relieved to see the news when I checked this thread after the show!

I, too, love to see a beautiful running edge, it’s not just Chris!
agreed. He may use that term when it applies. I watched Belinda comment on a handful of skaters who were very nice young ladies but whose FS scores were running 50-70. It was nice of her to use a bit of hyperbole commenting on them, but not very professional. They were what they were....you be nice to them and encouraging.....no one should be run down....but you should be truthful. I think Ted walks this fine line better than anyone. He sees the good and he sees the possibilities for the future. And I dont think he ever used the word "cracker". LOL!

I have a hard time with airline /FAA rules. Documented Skaters should be allowed to board with skates in special carry on cases. I see all sorts of people board with sports equipment like what appear to be hockey sticks and other deadly weapons like knitting needles and zip ties. Anyone who puts anything of value in a checked bag is doing so at their own peril. You dont ever want to go behind the scenes and see what your luggage has to go through to get to your flight on time....
