2025 Worlds: Info and pre-game chat

It is getting exciting as each day passes. I am kind of looking at the overall countries and I guess the team event for the Olympics. I see USA as the odds on favourite for gold they have such depth in ladies and are likely to win two gold medals out of the four events maybe even 3 right now in the crazy lady's event. I guess they could win bronze in pairs. Then again they could be out of the top ten too. But they are the only team that really has 4 strong events or at least a minimum of top ten. Then you have Japan which could win three gold medals but no dance really. Italy and France have strong teams both lacking in ladies though. Italy may be stronger right now having more talent than France in Dance, Pairs and Ladies. France is really all over the place for men with injuries and MH issues. Georgia maybe next but I could have missed someone. Korea Oh I forgot Canada. Canada's big issue is their singles skating. 4 long years since Keegan Messing and they have not produced a top ten skater in men or women.
I am also looking at the team event - and hoping that the British skaters will all qualify for the Olympics, and we will have a team. It feels really exciting at the moment - we have a fantastic group of skaters across all four disciplines. [It's even more impressive when you consider that British elite skaters get very little funding, (and often have to hold down jobs to support their skating, and have to fit their training in at public rinks).]

It's touch and go - other than Lilah and Lewis, and Ana and Luke, our skaters' short program SBs are very close either side of the cut-off for the free. It all depends on how much menning there is. We could have anything from 2-5 competitors, even without any major upsets, just minor shuffling.

There is a good chance that qualifying in 3/4 disciplines would be enough for the olympic team event. Ice dance should be fine for one team, with a possibility that Bekker and Hernadez might qualify a second if they have a really good RD. They have the 20th best RD score this season and I think it is between them, the Hungarians, Harris/Chan, Soucisse/Firus, the Slovakians and the Japanese team for the final spot to reach the FD. I was thinking that Ana and Luke had a decent chance in pairs, but don't know how much the lost luggage issue has destabalised things. They should be able to reach the FP okay, but that isn't enough in pairs - they then need to place top 16 overall for an olympic spot. They need two completely clean skates and need to hope that the judges go with them on GOE and PCS. Kristen has a chance of reaching the free and thus qualifying, but is dependent on mistakes from others even if she has a completely clean SP. She has the 25th best SP score (top 24 qualify) and I think the final 3 FP spots are a battle between her, Ekaterina Kurakova, Maria Seniuk, and Alexandra Feigin. If they all go clean, Kristen will probably lose out because her technical difficulty is lower. Ed unfortunately looks unlikely to qualify. He would need to go completely clean and rely on mistakes from several others.

Just a silly question - what is your, guys, strategy to deal with nerves (yes, you are reading it right :) !) while watching your favourites?
I've got many many skaters who I genuinely like and root for them but who I can watch skate at the major comps like the upcoming Worlds with excitement which would not go beyond normal level of excitement if you know what I mean.
But there is another group of skaters that managed to get so deep into my heart that it brings up almost physical pain to watch them. At the Worlds it will be Adam Siao Him Fa in men singles , Niina Petrokina in women and 2 pairs team - Alisa/Misha and Minerva/Nikita (conflict of interest here is an extra complication), dance I don't follow thank God.
I almost feel like I won't be able to watch them live for the fear of heart attack!
What do you do? Do you wait for the results and then dare to watch? Or read the comp thread first? I'd be interested to know!
Like some people over here, I do not find the question silly, at all.
Well, this season taught me that I simply cannot watch Ice Dance in peace, live or via stream. I will either skip the stream altogether and then maybe check results afterwards/watch then or in case of live event I will grit my teeth while feeling physically ill from nerves if my faves are competing. Sometimes I can distract myself a bit if I have crating work to finish during live competition, but it doesn't work that well lol.
The rest is easier for me to just get the stream up and watch as it goes. Pairs are the easiest, then men who are a mixed bag 95% of the time so I'm used to just shrug at this point and then ladies bc I like too many/would like too many to win.
I sincerely hope you can find the best way to enjoy watching skating - rationally I do understand it is not in our control how our faves will do, yet our deeply invested feelings into the skaters throw logic out of the window, making some of us nervous wrecks :)

The startlist for women is up.

Compared to what they have achieved so far this season, these got a bad draw:
Yun (-9), Samodelkina (-11), Liu (-8), Gutmann (-6), Higuchi (-7)

And these women got a good draw considering what they have achieved so far:
Stepcenko (+11), Lee (+5), Kurakova (+11), Pinzarrone (+6), Levito (+7)

(Brackets show the starting position compared to their rank in the SB list)

It is always better to start late...

Hello, it’s fascinating to hear other people’s thoughts & experiences and also reassuring in some way - I am not alone struggling! I often wonder if my body displays all the physical signs of stress while watching, how the skaters manage to even stay on their feet when they must be wobbly let alone do jumps? I’ve decided to lower my expectations to zero like no jump landed at all and errors on other elements too. Then anything better than that from my favourites would be a bonus 😄. Maybe that will help 😉

It is based on world ranking, not SB. Samodelkina, Liu and Higuchi did not compete last season, so have a lower WR than skaters like Kurakova, Pinzarrone and Levito who did.

Another update from Chris, Kirsten Moore-Towers will be commentating with him.

Kirsten was good when she commented on Canadian Nationals pairs with Ted Barton. She was not good when she was commenting with Kaitlyn Weaver. I think she'll be good with Chris.

What a lovely invitation! Alas, allergic to alcohol, otherwise a bottle of Italian red (or two 😉) would be at my side…
Always was admiring how you guys can watch and leave /read comments at the same time I am afraid I am not good enough at multitasking ! 😔 I watch first and afterwards read every bit of comp thread and enjoy it nearly as much as the competition itself
