Due to the time difference, I've been unable to watch WTT live, but I'm catching up on YouTube now, I'm loving the skating, it was great to see the performances one last time this season.

The end? Only of the season. Next season will be here soon enough!

Liu is a true champion. Glad Amber h ad a redemption skate. Kaori is going to have to regroup. USA is dominating, unbeatable with Allyssa and Amber. Canada was a huge disappointment here in theladies.

Hmmm…
Sakamoto not clean, so 3rd.
Gubanova clean, so 4th.
They definitely should have been closer in the scoring. Kaori’s TES should be 3 points lower than it was given the mistakes on the 3Lutz and the wild swinging landing of that 3toe in the combination.

Kaori looked surprised at her score given her landings, the judges were generous. I have to wonder if Amber had skated in the 2nd group, she might have beaten Alysa. Her tech was higher but her PCS were in the 8s and Alysa got 9s.

The scoring here was pretty generous (Oprah voice: you get a season's best, and you get a season's best!) overall, but I still enjoyed the event all around. And the cash prizes don't hurt. Alysa, C/B and Ilia pocketed $55K gross each if my calculations are correct ($30K appearance fee as WC+ 25K from the grand prize of 200K for Team USA). Not bad for a few days work.

I'm sorry, but there is no version of reality in which Alysa's long program is worth 150 points. None. Giving her 9s in PCS for middling skating skills and hair flip choreography is a choice. And a bad one. I'm glad that she's skating well in her return, but this inflation is too much. I hope it doesn't continue in the Olympic season.

Happy Amber skated well and ended her season on a high note!

Great fun comp. So many fun skates. Thank you, Japan, for a great comp and being so supportive. .Kaori, I always enjoy you even though you have had issues in your what? Last 8 skates? Love Team Japan and USA. "Cracker" Chris gets a dope slap for hearing the announcers say Kaori's name right so many times and still not making an attempt to pronounce her name right. Ilia, if what I saw during the medal ceremony is correct, and I am willing to admit I was wrong, gets a huge dope slap for not putting his hand over his heart during the anthem. The last time the US Flag code was changed was in 2017. I am hoping this was just a stupid slip up and not intentional.
(A) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note;
(B) members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and
(C) all other (US) persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.

I always find the irony of that so funny!

Mind you, I do wonder if, with wearing headsets and possibly having somebody in the gallery talking in their ear, the commentators can actually hear the rinkside announcers.

What?! You mean to say you actually have to do those things?!

I'm glad I'm not from a country where that is expected, then. Because I always cringe whenever I see anybody doing any of those things.

I just can't understand the whole concept of patriotism. And I know this is a symptom of being from a place where society is divided, and where people have loyalties to different flags. Because of this, I strongly believe is wisest to just steer well clear of the whole thing.

For me, your loyalties are to the people that you care about, and who care about you.

Im sorry, but I have a hard time finding a good excuse for someone in the skating media to not be able to pronounce Kaori's name right after she has been such a prominent figure in the sport for so long. This is not a case of him having trouble making the correct sounds because of his native language. It is pure incompetence at this point. The only mitigating circumstance I can think of is that the Japanese are too polite to complain about it, possibly out of sympathy because of their own difficulty in pronouncing many English words, and the people he associates with are just as ignorant of the proper pronunciation as he evidently is. On the patriotism topic, I agree that too much nationalism is a problem in sports as a whole, especially in what is an individual sport, although to be fair this was a national team event. Particularly in the US, where most of our major sports are now used as recruiting commercials for the military..You could get PTSD over here just from the amount military flyovers we are subjected to at outdoor sporting events. Thankfully, skating is an indoor sport. Lol

About British and American announcers not trying to pronounce names in other languages correctly, this is steeped in tradition. A good Englishman would never say PahREE when speaking of PEAR-iss. Why not? if you say PauREE you are speaking French. But I am speaking English. If you are speaking English you say Milan. If you are speaking Italian, you say Milano.

As for "what is expected of alll American citizens and visitors to America when the Star-Spangled Banner is played" -- when did they change the requirement that the audience must sing along with the band or soloist?

Another Americanism is that when the American flag passes in review before a foreign monarch in that monarch's country, it is never to dip in respect to the host. As for Britannia, they rule the waves and never never never never never will be slaves.

I was so disappointed when Australia gave up Waltzing Matilda and went along with everybody else.

The coolest flyover in U.S. sports is at the Philadelphia Eagles (2025 Super Bowl champions) home games when they release a majestic American bald eagle to fly around the stadium to the rocket's red glare. "Challenger" retired last year after a 25-year run, but"Lincoln" admirably has swooped up the baton.

Lincoln was named, not in honor of the patriotically admired U,S. President Abraham Lincoln who preserved the Union at the time of the Civil War, but rather to acknowledge the Lincoln Financial corp who which bought the naming rights to the Eagles' stadium. If founding father Benjamin Franklin had gotten his way in 1789, the national bird of the U.S. would have been the American wild turkey. -- a wonderful mascot for a sports team, right up there with the Oregon ducks.

It is amazing, particularly at night games.

And because this was important to me, in case anyone cares, Challenger and Lincoln are rescues who could not safely be released into the wild. Go Birds🦅

Sadly if a bird is in an ice rink, it is an unwanted visitor (probably on the bird's part as well)

Interesting point. What exactly does an announcer hear? Most usually dont talk over the introductions, etc so I assumed they were allowed to listen to what was happening.
I have never been to Ireland so am quite ignorant of its customs. I do like specials about it on our PBS. I do know in places you cant own land unless you can prove Local ancenstry and speak some Gaelic, but that may now be obsolete. The US that I grew up in probably is much different than the Ireland you grew up in. 250 years ago, People tried to tell us what to do and take our money with our having no say, They dont do that anymore. (from the outside) That takes an amazing amount of courage to pick liberty or death. So every day I went to grade school and maybe Junior High school, we paid homage to those that died for us. And pledge to never let that happen again. Now, its mostly at National events, like air races and base ball games. We were taught to never forget the people who died for us...and not just at Lexington .... So we stand and face the flag during the anthem. ...Other countries have the same types of practices...Most Japanese sing along with their anthem...I dont sing so good. But every day of my life I think about those that gave the last full measure of their devotion so I can be free.

That is what is so distressing about the current state of affairs in America. Our ancestors went through all that to get rid of King George. The whole Constitution and Declaration of Independence can be summed up in 6 words: "We don't want no flippin' king."

250 years later we threw it all on the garbage and set up our own.

I agree with your first part. But I dont know chris so I dont know if he is just arrogant or incompetent....If a golf announcer said "Tigger" instead of "Tiger" Woods, I think he/she would hear about it. Whether you like him or not, he deserves repect.

I agree. It is very frustrating for me as an independant. I am trying to remember the number of times in history a president or party has ignored the Supreame court, which of course has no enforcement abilities and I can only think of FDR. The Constitution didnt allow for consideration of anyone ignoring the SCOTUS. We only have the statements of the founding fathers... to paraphrase them "The Tree of Liberty must be watered by the blood of tyrants now and again......"

There was confusion at times...the flag code has been changed like 20 times....but it hasnt been changed since 2017 IIRC. I think at events where his father has been, he has held his hand over his heart,,,,and I dont disrespect those that dont like the present politicians in office...they can just stand and be quiet and hope truth and democracy eventually prevails....

Kristi Yamaguchi's grandmothers were both put in concentration camps. One was release to the interior of the US because her husband was in uniform, but she went back willingly to IIRC Heart Mountain due to the prejudice...every time I go there, I sit and pay my respects and think about her grandmothers..a friend of mine was in a camp with "Mr. Sula" from "Star Trek" ...

Here is an interesting and heart warming and heartbreaking story about Kristi's grand pop....

He and others had a right to not put their hands over their hearts...but he and the Boy scouts in the other camps did...and after the war they fought and eventually won the right to be thought of as humans and citizens....
