My understanding is that skaters are invited by the host organizer, selected from lists and requirements specified by the ISU? I don't think that the USFSA "sends" anyone, except maybe through back door "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" deals with other feds?

Presumably China chose Alyssa Liu as their pick of from 1-3 at 2025 Worlds, and then they chose Amber Gleann as their 4-6 pick.

I think Ted and Mark were answering questions during the ice resurfacing on the JPG ciruit. This would have been a good one. What could possibly go wrong?

I, too, wish I understood the details better. For instance, I think that the very top skaters are asked which events they prefer. But the ISU is not always compelled to honor their preferences. Plus, sometimes there isn't any choice at all. If a particular event has bad luck in the random draw to select skaters in a particular category, and when it comes their time to make their pick -- well, they have to take the skater who is left, whatever country that skater is from.

The top 6 skaters from Worlds get to choose their assignments in order of their placements (i.e. first gets to pick first, then second and lastly third, and correspondingly for 4th to 6th; not sure if they get to choose both assignments in one go or if they do two rounds so everyone gets at least some choice). This also means that Alysa is the one who chose Cup of China - Either as her top choice or out of the three remaining GPs.

The other assignments are indeed chosen by the hosting federation (with or without "deals")

I'm disappointed if Alyssa is using both programs from last year for this year. Seriously disappointed.
Alysa, per Goldenskate's post on X, is temporarily going back to her FS from last season while they 're-work' the Gaga program.

As to the SP, Alysa felt obliged to drop her new SP due to the fact that one of the artists in the song is associated with a tragedy, the (almost certain) murder of a 14 year old girl.

Just one of the headlines:

Also, remember that Alysa was forced to train and compete last month on broken boots that were barely held together by tape. That, and the tragedy involving the artist attached to the music to her (now scrapped) new SP, surely hampered her ability to train and work on her two new programs at optimum levels.

Obviously, Alysa and her team did not have the time to come up with a brand new SP on such short notice.

Slight caveat, host picks will supersede athlete choices.

For example; say Japan wanted Kaori, but it was Alyssa's first choice. Kaori would be at NHK over Alyssa.

completely understandable given the circumstances. absolutely not ideal for anyone but i think this is a smart, temporary choice. i'm looking forward to seeing the Gaga program later as i think it had a lot of potential with a rework; i wonder if she is permanently going back to her old SP for the rest of the season. that choice i would not be mad at, at all!
