Danny O’Shea agreed to a tryout with Deanna Stellato

Umm, maybe we could check the video for accuracy. 😉

Not you, too, hating on Danny & Ellie @Diana Delafield! 🫣 Did you never get nervous as a pairs skater having to perform after a team who skated to a resounding standing ovation? That's essentially what happened to Ellie & Danny at 2025 U.S. Nationals after they had performed a stellar, clean, first place sp in their bid to defend their 2024 U.S. championship. Such nerves and falling apart happens to the best athletes. Which surely makes Kam/ O'Shea rising to do better than expected in the Milano team event on Olympic ice all the more sweeter. 🥇
:) So it was them? I don't get to see all the American skaters and don't know them all by sight or name. Couldn't remember if it was that pair or another, but I was pretty sure a freak fall like that happened in the US, and a recent year at least.

Ah, you would have needed to see the full pairs event, sp and fp to gain a fair understanding of that event in total. 🙂 Superb practices and gorgeous, clean sp by Kam/ O'Shea. But Alisa/ Misha were on a mission, not only to make the World team for Worlds 2025 in Boston, but also to win their first U.S. championship. Looking back, I think Alisa/Misha were hoping that by piling up wins and an excellent resume, it might help in their quest for Alisa's U.S. citizenship to be granted in time for them to make the 2026 U.S. Olympics team.

After witnessing the highly emotional, clean fp by Alisa/ Misha, it was a lot of pressure for Kam/ O'Shea skating last in the last group. It was obvious to me that Danny & Ellie had a hard time taking a deep breath and truly connecting with each other before they had to go out on the ice. Danny seemingly was trying to keep it together and he was trying to catch Ellie's eyes and send her calm and strength, but even though they were holding hands, I don't think they found each other's eyes calmly. Thus, they were both nervous, jittery, and unable to capture the energy in the arena to ride on it. Instead, they were drowning in it. They began making uncharacteristic mistakes, so it was a hard watch.

I don't even remember how their performance ended. It's one of those 'wish I could have a do-over' disaster performances that athletes simply have to learn from, take the pressure lessons that they can, file away and move on from.

I think my post was fair. Danny is among the best lifters but he did have some scary moments too. No hate there. Just an observation.
He didn't have those moments by himself, nor due to any specific errors or personal failings on his part. Trying to keep track of fluke stuff that has happened to pairs guys and ladies over the years would be a full-time job. 😉

Some things that happen are often remembered more due to the rarity of occurrence, and also due to any unfortunate aftermath. Danny's fluke fall with Chelsea ended their partnership and Chelsea took a year off, in part because she had previously experienced concussions and she wanted to give herself a self-care break. The ending lift disaster with Tarah in 2019, coming at the penultimate moment of an exciting, clean performance (and 1st place in the sp), lost them their bid for a second U.S. National championship, after their 2016 win.

well... those moments are defining and stay in fans' memories, including mine. Some things are hard to "unsee"

For me, Kam/ O'Shea's trust and commitment in each other as partners, and never giving up on each other and their mutual goals is what defines them. Their greatest performances and the thrill of victory they achieved on Olympic ice are the memories that will stay with me, along with Danny's bright, sunshiny smile. He is so kind and funny.

I'm also gonna remember the fun backstage interview that Danny did with Laurin/ Ethier at 2026 Prague Worlds. It told us something about pairs skating and about each of their delightful personalities. 😊 It's all the more memorable because of the recent Laurin/ Ethier split. I have followed Kelly Ann & Loucas since they competed in juniors. Good luck to them both. 🍀

I’m not sure there is a pairs skater out there who has not had scary moments. I have forgotten the pair but there was one who got her head sliced open with her partners blade….Asley Cain falling so many times at Worlds that by the end it literally looked like she did not know where she was…concussions are a stock in trade.

February 2007 at Four Continents in Colorado Springs: During a pairs spin, Bryce Davison's skate blade slashed his partner, Jessica Dubé's face, narrowly missing her eye. It was a severe injury, but Jessica thankfully recovered and the pair continued their partnership together repping Canada.

A fluke but cautionary accident, that emphasized the importance of maintaining a reasonably safe distance during sbs camel spins.

Bratti/ Somerville (U.S. ice dancers) were recently interviewed on Blades & Banter podcast, during which they discussed a fluke 2022 training accident where Ian dropped Emily, and she broke bones in her face and knocked her teeth out of alignment, with a tooth piercing into her lip. I find it amazing how calmly she dealt with it and quickly recovered to continue competing two weeks later. 👀 She had to have extensive dental work, including root canals to repair teeth and dental retainers to realign her teeth. She still sees an orthodontist for maintenance work related to the dental damage.

Elena Berezhnaya got kicked in the head by her abusive first partner's blade while practising SBS camel spins, and Jessica Dube had her face slashed the same way -- on TV in competition. The clip from the broadcast used to be on Youtube somewhere.

I had a freak accident once that could have been much more serious than it was. We were practising lift combinations outdoors on a sunny day, in a beach volleyball sand pit. Went up in a lasso. Check. Tilted it forward into a reverse platter. Check. Then I went to slip my hands free to make it a no-hander. Since a lasso/reverse platter has us facing in the same direction, the grip is L/L and R/R. As I yanked, my right hand came free and shot out to the side. But at the same instant, over there on the left, the edge of my wedding ring caught under the edge of his wedding ring and locked our hands together, sending me pitching off his left side. He thrust out his right arm and caught me so I landed harmlessly on my feet in the sand.

But pairs men have muscular arms that are as hard as granite when tensed, and I smacked my throat on his arm as I fell. At first I couldn't make a sound, then squeaks came back, and after half an hour I was at least croaking again. Since I'm normally a non-stop talker, there were a lot of jokes about how peaceful it suddenly was. It was several years before I discovered that people get killed hitting their throats on a hard edge and crushing the larynx, but by then enough time had passed that I just thought "Wow, I was pretty lucky that time!" We'd done that same combination many times since with no problem, so it remains in our repertoire. We call it "the wedding ring lift".

OMG! Pairs women are made of strong stuff fr!!! 😳💍🤸‍♀️⛸️ 🎉

yes. I will also remember their Olympic team event FP. That was also a defining moment. There is often good and ugly in most skaters' career. Memory is indeed selective. I don't remember Malinin's world's LP... but I do remember his Olympics LP... but I also remember his Montreal worlds LP... that was a great skate.

I didn't have time to listen all of it but towards the end when they were asked about their plans for after the SOI, Danny was evasive enough saying that there would be some serious conversations whatever it means. So I guess we just have to wait and see.

For the record, I was NOT hating on Danny and Ellie. I merely stated what many were thinking. Were it not for repeated falls on side by sides and throw triples I think the team would have accrued more medals and had more success. As I said in my post, I think Ellie is darling and fearless and does exceptionally well in lifts, etc. And Danny has always been patient and supportive. I hope whatever the two of them do, either together or separately, they find happiness. And Blissful, you DO come off as being very opinionated and knowing everything about pairs. That's really okay, but some of us have opinions, too.

So, any more word about Danny and Deanna? Even show skating from them would be great to watch, and I would love that pairing to happen as long as Ellie is happy with whatever's decided, too!

What about Max? I wonder if this is true or just a rumour
I think last week TSL had Deanna trying out with Balazs Nagy, so I'm putting Danny O'Shea down as a rumour for now.

With Max though, Robert Brodie had this in his May 9th column:
But beyond them, there’s a whole bunch of uncertainty. The run appears over for 2024 World champions, Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, with the latter said to be retiring and the ageless Stellato-Dudek searching for a new partner because she’s not nearly done yet (something she indicated at the Winter Games in Milan).

He also noted the Bombardier/Ethier rumours in his column the week before and he got the confirmation from Skate Canada about Minsol Kwon's transfer. I trust him. I'm sure there will be an announcement after SOI.

Yikes, I thought Max had already indicated he wanted to retire. If that's not so, I sure didn't mean to leave him out of discussion and concern. My error.
