Lastest Phil Hersh column

Aww, I apologize. I think this quoting game has gotten out of control a little bit. :) It just happened that we both had completely oppsotite point of views. And No, I don't think my favorite skaters are PERFECT. However, I hate how Yuna always gets dragged into this issue of being "over-scored."
I stop and go to the movies now! Night everyone. :D

It is not the same system. Two of the judges scores randomly don't get selected and the high and low numbers also get thrown out. It's much harder for a cheating scandal to occur.

You might be incorrect in your statement above.

From Wikipedia on the ISU:

A new figure skating judging system took effect in 2004, eliminating the 6.0 system perfect scores and instead giving points for various technical elements. Mathematicians conducted a study and concluded that the new voting system is more flawed than the previous one.

ETA: Yes obviously the majority of Canada wants Joannie to win gold. I was just pointing out how warmly Yu-Na has been welcomed into our country - even now when it is an Olympic year and we have huge medal hopes in all sports and pressure on our athletes.

Maybe Canada should kick that ungrateful Kim out of the country just to show her! How dare she try to beat a Canadian in the Olympics after all that Canada has done for her!! :chorus: Unless she renounce her citizenship and become a Canadian and represent Canada, she ought to be sent on a plane right back home! Even then she has to lose to Rochette since she's not a "real" Canadian! Japan Figure Skating Federation would be grateful too... get her away from that evil Orser!!:rofl: j/k j/k

I think many of the posts on this thead can be summed up in one sentence:

My favourite skater never, ever gets overscored, it's just those skaters I don't like as much that get unwarranted *help* from the judges.

 yeah, like always.

<-- doesn't have a favorite so I just say when I think a skater- any skater- is overscored. ;)

haha. Looking back it was a pretty ridiculous statement I guess - I didn't mean it to come out that way though. Just caught up in the moment! I'll go back and delete it :)

There have been many insults thrown Joannie's way in the past week saying she isn't feminine because of her muscular build among other insulting things.

Though this is off topic, I'd appreciate your acknowledgment that one Korean-speaking fan provided with a cultural/linguistic explanation regarding the possible misunderstandings in these discussions in the SC SP thread (i.e., Joannie being called "Brother" in some of Asian boards).

This made me follow up similar pet names of hers in the context of Japanese.

Although some of the perceived insult may have been indeed real, some of it may also have been just due to misunderstandings for being taken out of the cultural/linguistic context.:) Relax.

In Joannie's defense, she deserves better than the flack she has been receiving this past week (and elsewhere at other times this year). Her jumping technique is one of the cleanest, and she has a classic, crisp way of moving on the ice. Her Samson & Delilah LP this season is one of the loveliest we may see this year.

However, if I had to try to lure a non-skating-fan into watching current competitive female skaters, I'd start with YuNa and the next in line wouldn't be Joannie - it would be Mao.

i love to skate, you really shouldn't have started this debate from Page 1. :o I don't know how one would have expected even non-uber YuNa fans to react.

:laugh:I really just found it arrogant the way Hersh made his statement. I really didn't mean to start a huge argument and I guess I was just a bit upset at all the flack Joannie has received this week.

I think Yu-Na is a very talented skater and think that she has some amazing skills. I also know that Joannie isn't perfect - so please don't anyone think I am a Joannie uber - and I know that she has to skate much better this year, get the levels up in her spins and improve her consistency. May the best woman win at the GPF and Olympics

Also Joannie competed in 4CC in Vancouver last year....and she didn't win - she skated an EXCELLENT program too! I know you are a fan of Yu-Na Kim and she has been welcomed warmly here in Canada where she has been allowed to receive exceptional training, ice time, and support. Some of our famous Canadian athletes are helping her in achieving her Olympic dream.

If Canada had not allowed her, she would have gone to US and possibly now under Carrol or Laws or some other great coach. Don't forget she pays for what she receives.

I think the YuNa-Orser relation has been one of the most successful win-win. Yes, YuNa improved a lot under Orser and she is really comfortable in the Cricket club. However, Orser has become one of the best coaches in the world thanks to YuNa. How could a rookie coach be this successful only in three years? Because he has a great student.

Also, Cricket club has become one of the the most talked about skating club in the world with YuNa, Adam, Gao. In 2007, she was the only well known skater there. It all came when YuNa persuaded Orser several times to be her coach. He was not even a coach when she first met him. YuNa contributed a lot to the Canadian skating.

Thanks for welcoming her warmly though.

So if someone was poisoning your cupcakes, the solution would not be to identify and stop the person, but to randomly throw away 2 of the cupcakes out of every batch. Genius.

Am not sure why some are laughing quite so hard? Haven't you ever played Russian roulette ;)

There seems to be some irony involved here as it is apparently OK to randomly throw away judges scores.

Doing this with poisoned cupcakes does sound ridiculous - but so does throwing away half of the judges scores imo.

What a silly system.

How about making an actual effort to use the most honest judges in the first place, and use as many marks as possible ?

Why tell us that you must throw away half the marks to prevent cheating? What a confession to make when you are trying to clean up skating's image!

Why not show us the marks so we can decide if there appears to be favoritism and dismiss judges who seem less than fair from all future ISU sanctioned events?

What a revolutionary concept ;)

Cupcakes indeed. ;)

Precisely!

this SC mess better not happen at the Canada Games...

Can you please define "mess" or explain how the judging at SC was too much different than the other GP's?

Do you honestly believe Joannie and other Canadian skaters were the only skaters propped up this season?

Or a different question might be is so much biased judging necessary or good for the direction of the sport? With so much favoritism is it fair to consider skating under CoP really a sport at all?

how about throw all cupcakes and replace them with muffins?
