2024 Skate Canada is the second event of the 2024-25 ISU Grand Prix series and is scheduled to take place October 25-27, 2024, in Halifax, N.S. The ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series consists of six international senior invitational events and culminates with the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in December.

Competitors collect points in their individual Grand Prix events towards the qualification for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final. Only the top six skaters/teams in each discipline can qualify for the Final.

Skaters are seeded and invited to the six Grand Prix of Figure Skating events based on the results obtained at the 2024 ISU World Figure Skating Championships. Skaters/teams who have placed first through sixth in each of the four categories are seeded and assigned to two events. Skaters/teams who have placed seventh through 12th at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships are selected for two ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating events. Skaters with a top 24 Season Best Scores (from the 2023-24 season), as well as those placed in the top 24 of the ISU World Standings, can also be invited.

In order for a skater/team to be eligible to compete at an ISU Grand Prix event, a minimum total score must have been achieved in the 2023-24 or current 2024-25 season in an ISU event (Grand Prix, Junior Grand Prix, Championships) or a Challenger Series event. Exceptions apply to host country skaters, previously ranked skaters or split ranked couples who return with new partners.

I’ve never been to Halifax. Anyone have hotel recs (no car).
From what I can tell (searching online, talking to people familiar with the area), there are many hotels within walking distance (i.e., less than 30 minutes) however some may require a walk up hill (what I've been told). There is a nice hotel located directly across from the arena.

I had to cancel my plans, but originally I had booked the Prince George Hotel which is directly across the street from the arena. It was pretty pricey. I believe a few people had mentioned they stayed at the Hampton, which is close by, reasonable, and includes a free hot breakfast.

that's where I ended up, but still have to book a car for my first 2 days. My family is from the other side of NS so I'm foregoing practice day to see family sites.

Apparently, Skate Canada is giving away its host spot in pairs....

Why does it seem like a déjà-vu ?

Oh... yeah.. because it's not the first time.....
I'm completely baffled by this. Pairs spots are difficult to come by in GPs just because of how few there are to start with, and they're just willingly giving one back to the field that they have outright.

They must feel for some reason that they don't have another pairs team who are ready, which surprises me. It can't be financial, because it will cost more for them to bring another pair in. Now that Efimova and Mitrofanov have two spots, the next on the replacement list is the Usbek team. I think they would need to be flown in from Russia.

why wouldn't they give it even to a junior team that might be coming up or a team not quite ready to get international experience? It's baffling.

They may feel that Junior teams would do better with two JGP assignments than with one senior GP. Remember, teams can't do both junior and senior GP in the same season.

The ISU has some sort of minimum criteria for a skater/team to be assigned to a GP. I think there may be one for host spots as well (lower than for "other" skaters? suggested only, and host can ignore the suggestion?). Skate Canada may not have any other skaters that meet the ISU suggested minimum.

Host spots don't need to reach the ISU minimum score.

The minimum score for Pairs from the ISU is 132.93 😑

Even if it isn't required, I think there could have been a team that met it. It's not an unrealistic score.

Unfortunately there isn't. ISU GP alternate list
Any Pairs team that meets the minimum SB is added to the alternates list now. They can't meet the minimum SB if they don't compete internationally.

They could have been added if they had competed at one of the earlier Challengers and met the score there. Or they might not have. But if they don't get the chance, then they definitely won't make the alternates list.
