Pick the music you want your favorite skaters to skate to in the coming season!

Maybe this is off the wall impractical, but I just found (after years of searching) Ennio Morricone's theme music for the TV miniseries Marco Polo. It's got fast and slow sections and is very sweeping and dramatic in parts. There are various mixes of it, but here's the main theme played by cellist Yo-Yo Ma plus orchestra.

I think Mao could do something with it, because I see her being able to tap the spirit of adventure in it, and it has a mournful quality that she, a skillful actress, could bring out.

Ah yes that was beautiful. I would love to see Yu-na skate to this, or Mao. I am certain that somebody else skated to this music (Yagudin?).
 
I want Takahiko or Daisuke to skate to Taku Iwasaki's soundtrack from the Rurouni Kenshin OVA. I would have put Nobunari, too, but it might be considered, I don't know, being too obvious? RurouKen's story deals with a fictional wandering swordsman who fought during the volatile period just before the rule of the shogunate ended, and struggled to live peacefully during the Meiji era. Considering whom he's a descendant of, it might be trying too hard if I choose Nobunari...

I think this track is quite epic, full of drama and tension. :)

Yuna certainly reminds me of Ravel's Gaspard De La Nuit. I think Mao will be wonderful as queen of the night from Mozart's Zaube Flote. It takes a light and ethereal skaters to do Queen of the night aria justice. Choreographed well, this can be mockingly scary in a humorous way.

I love Yo Yo Ma plays Morricone cd, there are many good choices for many skaters.

Music like she uses in her exhibition pieces! Her exhibition pieces are always brilliant and then recently her programs are really dull and ill-suited!

Recent programs, so besides RAch's prelude in c sharp minor, I can't think of any that is so ill suited or dull. Anyway "music like her exhibition pieces" covers a lot. I mean besides Taco Bell Canon, and Philip Glass what else ?

Taco Bell Canon--I love it!

The Korngold violin concerto is a great idea, and the Villa-Lobos. (Of course the Kwan fan in me imagines her skating to this mysterious, haunting piece.) I think the Gliere harp concerto is in this vein and would be lovely. Years ago, Berezhnaya-Sikharulidze skated to Gliere's unusual and ravishing concerto for coloratura, in which the soprano sings vocalises rather than words, so I guess it didn't count as a vocal piece.

There's a lot of music from Rimsky-Korsakov's operas that is lyrical, colorful, and exciting, and I wish people would go beyond Scheherezade and find it. There's also a lot to be said for Borodin pieces like In the Steppes of Central Asia and material from his second symphony and that amazing second string quartet.

Are you the one who mentioned the Queen of the Night aria for Mao? Lovely idea, really different, though of course as a vocal piece it would have to be for exhibition, but I'd pay to see that!
 
Sibelius is a great idea for music! There's a lot of wonderful stuff in his symphonies and tone poems. I have always loved the Nocturne from King Christian II

I don't know who could skate to it; I always imagined Paul Wylie, who has an ardent, forthright quality. But it doesn't have to be a guy, of course. I think Mao or Joannie might bring something to it as well.
 
How about these? Rach Vocalise for Mao's short program. Lamente D'Ariane for Yu Na's long.
 
How come nobody ever skates to Simple Gifts from Appalachian Spring? I can see it fitting a lot of skaters' style. But I'd love to see Mao Asada skating it to it most..,. Mirai and Yuna, too, although Yuna could probably skate to just about anything...

I can also see Joannie Rochette doing a terrific job with it.

btw, Silverlake your list was just superb and much fun to go too. Loved your picks for Mirai and Mao. You should mail them to the skaters :)

:laugh: Thanks! I wish I could. Off-season always seems to last forever so I tend to think up all kinds of stuff while waiting for the season to arrive.

Janetfan, thanks so much for posting the link to Brian skating to Copland. What a perfect blend of skater and music. Brian's majestic style goes so well with Copland's stately music. What jumps, what presentation. And his spreadeagles, both inside and outside edges--wow!

Unless I miss my guess, the beginning section of Brian's routine is actually from another Copland work, A Lincoln Portrait, while the rest is from Appalachian Spring. Sandra Bezic went through a Copland phase, possibly inspired by Boitano. For a show with Brian that I saw, she used a less well-knownpiece from his opera The Tender Land called "The Promise of Living," which I had never heard before but which immediately became one of my favorite pieces. I believe a quartet skated to it. Here's that music (not with skaters):

I don't know who could pull off Copland now. It wouldn't have to be an American any more than a skater would have to be Russian to use Scheherezade (or Persian!), but it would have to be a skater (or pair) who projected confidence. I'm thinking Savchenko and Solkowy might manage it. (Apologies for spelling!)
