It is certainly not unusual for a President to commiserate with his Olympian athletes. It does seem unusual for a President to actually be seated at a competition, and then also be seated next to the President of said competition's governing body. Particularly with figure skating, which is inherently an international sport.

Cinquanta is not a dignitary. He is not a diplomat or official in a government. He runs a sporting organisation in which multiple countries compete. Not the same thing at all.

Um...which sport at the Olympics is not "inherently international"? Idk what that even means.

The U.S. presidents chose to attend other sporting events/had more pressing issues to attend to.

Gracie represents America whether she is competing at nationals or worlds. Ottavio's oversight extends across national lines. No it would not be "ok," because it is still a matter of national bias at an event about international solidarity. Yes it would not look as bad, because if Putin has interest in the Russian hockey federation or whatever which has completely different teams, there is no common interest.

He should hold the image of the sport with high enough regard that he wouldn't sit with the President of a hosting nation. Again, figure skating is a competition totally based on international competitors. It is a notorious for the way politics among nations shape its outcomes. Russia, and the US being the dominant players---he should certainly not associate with either world leaders. It injects him into the international politics we absolutely do not want tainting the sport. He has absolutely no reason to.
