Yuzuru Hanyu: 2013-14 Season

Shu Uemura or Shiseido for their skin line!!!
I so can picture the CM, a girl insecure of herself to date Yuzuru because he is oh so pretty!!! Decide to use (insert makeup Brand) to look good by his side...

Does Ajinomoto has a soup line?

I always keep thinking that the most and greatest contribution of Arakawa to Japan (even more to world) figure skating should be her speaking in press conference after gold medal in Torino Olympics.

She mentioned the close of Sendai ice rink had resulted in difficulty for young skaters practice locally. Thus, Sendai government and enterprises would work together to raise fund for reopen the ice rink. And as we know, Yuzu had a chance to continue his amazing journey.

Thank you, Ms. Arakawa!

I totally agree. On another note, Shizuka and Yuzuru seem to have many similarities. Both hail from Sendai, both are relatively tall for Japanese figure skaters, both have gorgeous Ina Bauers, both are Olympic gold medalists, and both have a regal air about them. Yuzuru has often been described as looking like a prince, while in the official Olympic documentary on Shizuka's Olympic victory, Nikolai Morozov described Shizuka as looking like a Japanese princess.

Come on other sponsors, the kid is a magnet, get in there.

I want him to be sponsor by:
Nissan--- he can´t drive in Japan, but he can in Canada
Nestlé--- Chocolate
Sony- earphones
PSP- GAMES
Puma/ Adidas/ Under Armor--- clothes
COca Cola/ Powerade--- since he can´t drink colas

Well thought of list considering Yuzuru's likes and interests...but "Where's Pooh?" (Disney) ;)

But seriously, I wonder whether his family has already engaged the services of an agent just as Jason Brown recently did. (Jason chose not to be in the IMG stable btw.) In one of the earliest posts of this thread, someone described Yuzuru as a "marketer's dream," and this was way before he won Olympics and Worlds. I hope he (wisely) takes advantage of the financial opportunities now open to him as the world's top skater as this in turn can give him greater opportunities to realize his own personal goals as well as to help others.

Article about the video of Oda saying Yuzuru is a sadistic
Translation http://yuzuristxoxo.tumblr.com/post/86024505746/s-nobunari-oda-says
Article http://news.livedoor.com/article/detail/8832976/

Wonder why Oda think Yuzuru is sadistic?

He doesn't say that Yuzu is sadistic. He says, "Yuzuru is rather S type. I'm M type so we get along very well." I hope someone will approve of this translation. The article just added the sentence "Yuzuru has the opposite side of his prince-like character" and I think that was rude towards Yuzu cause Oda didn't even mean that. The author of the article simply wanted to make Yuzu look seriously sadistic.:rolleye:
Also, don't take these S&M types seriously. It's like blood type in Japan. It doesn't necessarily mean that you are sadistic if you're called S-type or masochistic if called M-type. :)

lmao, I can totally see that

I've been wondering the same thing. One would certainly hope that they did.

well, I for one had already hoped that it was meant more in a metaphorical and less in a literal way  (mostly because I really didn't want to know how Oda would have gotten that kind of information...)
But since you brought it up, I've been meaning to ask: what's up with the blood type thing anyway? Whenever I look up someone from Japan, this info always seems to be included. That's not really done where I come from, and I'm currently too busy and too lazy to google it ^_^ but maybe someone knows without having to do much research?!

PS: jeez, people, 400 pages  we are at least a little insane, you know that, right?!

Well, it's just something that I know. But I hope that people who know for sure will approve of my words concerning Oda's words. But come on, if we are caught up by this ridiculous logic (if we see his words in a literal way) then we must be extremely worried about Oda being a masochist. Really, what have his parents been doing? How could they raise a masochist? Seriously, look after Oda, he may cut himself soon. Hide knifes and scissors from this guy or he will not be saved. Call psychiatrists. The one who wrote that ridiculous article should be put in a hospital.
As for blood type, I don't really know. But Japanese people are very caring about anyone when it comes to personal health. Maybe they write blood type everywhere so it would be easy to find it out immediately in a critical situation?

jace93, maybe you know something about S&M types then? It seems many people including me would like to know about it so no one will build up illusions about Yuzuru being a sadist.

thanks for the link, jace :)
I wouldn't even know my blood type  I'm lucky to know my zodiac sign (although I can never remember which character traits are supposed to come with it)

I'm not quite sure how serious you are right now, and I know that at least my kind of humor often doesn't come across in the written word, so just to be on the safe side: I was just kidding :)
Do people really take this s&m thing THAT literal? (maybe I'm not up to date on that discussion). Sure, those terms can always imply something, um, let's call it 'kinky'... but I also know that those terms are nowadays used in a less drastic fashion all the time. It's just a way to describe character traits and doesn't necessarily point to some extreme behavior or deep seeded emotional issues (neither of which have to be present even if you are actually into s&m. It's just something some people do *shrugs*)

I'm not really serious either  But, I'm still amazed by how some people on the Internet took Oda's words  For example, I've read comments on tumblr, some fans really panicked. Now that article. I'm glad you people don't take it seriously.
I would like to learn something about these types, I couldn't find information about them on the Internet.
By the way, it's written that people with Yuzu's blood type sometimes become victims of discrimination because they don't count as good workers :disapp: Yuzu can break Japanese stereotypes and help B-blood type people!

According to what I know, S in Japan means bully guy, while M means weakness or timid guy
In Japan's variety show, people dont hestimate to say if they are S or M, and that's just for fun (I think)

This article is based on a TV program Nobu and Akiko were on last week so the only inaccuracy I can see is that it was the narrator who said that "Hanyu has an opposite side of the prince-like character," then Nobu continues on to say that "Hanyu-kun has an S-type characteristic.
"S-type/M-type" discussions are just like blood type categorization and the whole "meat-eater/grass-eater" discussions people in Japan have over lunch time or going out for drinks. It's a convenient topic to chat about when you're run out of things to talk about too!

From my understanding, S-type people have a little bit of a mean side to them that they like to let out sometimes (playing pranks for example). And M-type people are those who don't mind/can endure the meanness/pranks without getting mad.
This is the photo that comes up to my mind when I think of Yuzuru the S-type.
http://prcm.jp/album/ugyfyuyuutyrr/pic/31551697
And it wasn't just me because someone has added a caption that says "ドS" which means "Extreme-S" (S-type to the max.)

Someone have posted this video : https://telly.com/1HTK7N3 . It shows Yuzu before, during and after Olympics with a big huge between Denis ten and him. What does Yuzu say in the different interview that he gave ? And the hug Yuzu/Denis was so touching ... With Patrick Chan too ;)

S & M should be understood somehow as ツッコミ役 and ボケ役 in Japanese comedy 漫才。 Just one says stupid and funny words (ボケ役 ) , the other one then points out and says sarcastic words (ボケ役). That is not exactly the same as the S & M here. But it means more like, e.g., Oda will behave or say stupidly, and Yuzu will point out strictly, and then Oda will apologize (Kanako actually did this by saying Oda was noisy according to Oda in the same show). Or Yuzu is saying some sarcastic words and Oda will follow up by catching those to himself. Most importantly, Oda enjoys such thing, i.e., he is an M type person. Yuzu and Kanako also enjoys playing such game with Oda, so they are S-type. Kanako was not referred directly as S during the show mainly because she was not the topic there. But for sure she is an S-type in front of Oda. You have to realize that in Japanese culture, because of the age and experience,Yuzu and Kanako should never do that to a non-M type senior person, e.g., Daisuke. They never did that.

So S and M is more about conversation and interaction. NOTHING about sex or body torture. NOTHING kinky. Oda literally said, "Our conversations flows really well.(話しの相性がすごくいい.may not exactly the same but I can't check the video now) " right after that SM statement.

Frankly say, I never imagined people will get upset by this simply funny statement. That is really "lost in translation"

P.S: I am so happy to get the #6000 post! but the topic is a little bit ... eh...

That it was indeed :)
thanks a lot for that thorough and insightful explanation.
I think it's always kinda amazing how such culture specific things can be taken way out of context and misinterpreted if you are not familiar with them (and as a side note: in retrospect, it certainly puts my seminars about intercultural communication in perspective ;))

and I honestly don't think the topic is "eh" I find this totally fascinating how these little things can get completely misinterpreted, because you just assume that you know the meaning of something - and then things like this happen. (and thank God we have the internet and people like you who teach us new things every day ;))

You are welcome, Pamina. I also got a lot of information from this thread every day. And nothing is more fun than discussing about the things we all like. :)

japanese people believe that blood type can influence ones behavior, a little like zodiac signs in western country... here's a link to wikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_types_in_Japanese_culture

Incidentally, Yuzuru's blood type is "B"

Edit:

Oh, already mentioned this !

But never mind, people ! Most Japanese are talking about the blood type something like everday's weather.
Some may take it seriously, but the majority forget about it right after they asked, including me
You may think it is similar to zodiac signs in Japan.

As my blood type is "AB", I'm always said "Type AB is crank"
I answer, "Oh, you know very well !"
