Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

As much as I like his biellman I also hope he will give up on this to not push his back. I don't want him to be totally as his master Plushy with screws in his back ;) But it will be hard for giving up his ina bauer as it is one of most beatifull across all including ladies

Well you kinda expect ladies to do it beautifully whereas Yuzuru's is a pleasant surprise. ;)

It's very unfortunate, but just imagine how much worse it would be (both for him & the fans) if he got all the way to Finland and had to withdraw there. I'm glad he's taking precautions. The GP isn't far away at all.

Now after reading the comments, it really sucks for the fans (both from Japan and other countries) who booked tickets for the Finlandia Trophy. Also regrettable for the broadcasting company that especially bought the rights for this event just because Hanyu was participating.

Other than that, I really hope he recovers well without further worries.

Wow, I was only thinking yesterday that I hope we get some news on Hanyu-kun...but that was certainly not what I was hoping to hear!

Knowing how stubborn he is, I hope he is withdrawing because he is learning to listen to his body and his physicians, not because it is really painful...

The FB message did not really mention his injury, which is why I think it probably did come from him who did not want fans to worry.

I will be wincing every time I see him do a Biellmann Spin or an Ina Bauer for sure...

Him withdrawing is probably a sign that he is maturing in the sense that he is more concerned of his body now than unleashing what we all have seen as the samurai spirit, I would have this rather than him pushing through then eventually leading to have more serious problems later on. I was really excited that we would already see the the whole of his SP and LP in a few weeks but oh well I can wait till COC... Hanyu-kun is such a tease...

^ I think it's more like he doesn't have to push himself to compete in FT since it's just a Senior B? Unlike in Worlds 2013 where he probably had to unleash more of that "samurai spirit" despite being injured because the placings determined the number of Olympic spots.

I agree wth axing the Biellmann. Honestly, I think the kid is holding on to it for sentimental reasons. :scowl: And he doesn't even need it to get level 4 spins anyway. Sigh... Yuzu can be really stubborn. Anyway, I'm glad he chose to prioritise his health and though I'm a bit disappointed that we won't get to see his new LP (which I believe will be awesomesauce :p) but health comes first!

Was sad to hear about Yuzuru's injury but am glad that it wasn't anything serious. I wish him a speedy and well recovery :agree:

Here's another article about his injury. I've tried to translate it to the best of my knowledge. Since I have no medical knowledge, I might have not done a very good job in this translation.

Hanyu Yuzuru Absence From Of First Competition This Season
Back Bones Deformation
Required 4 Weeks of Bedrest

On the 23rd, Japan Skating Federation has announced that Hanyu Yuzuru (19)(ANA), men figure skate gold medalist from Sochi Olympics, has withdrawn from Finlandia Trophy (opening on Oct 10, Espoo, Finland).

According to authorized personnel, due to deformation of his intervertebral disc on his back, he requires 4 weeks of bedrest. Hanyu, currently located in Toronto, Canada, is said to be refraining from practice. If his condition is not improving, he might have to withdraw from Grand Prix (GP) Cup Of China (Shanghai) opening on November 7.

This article sounded more serious than the rest of the articles. I honestly hope this is not true and he will recover fully before COC.

do you think deviated/deviation or alternatively perforated/perforation, or on that end ruptured, or hernia/herniated, might be the translation for deformation? Because those are things I am familiar with, well in their existence. Or did you pick deformation because it straddles the two intentionally (i.e. so you could avoid questions like this, if so I am sorry)?

I know where you're coming from. I pick the word "deformation" because the title says "腰の骨変形"
腰の骨 is "hipbone / backbone"
変形 is "change of shape / deform / transform"
Honestly I don't think his injury is THAT serious. Like I said, I have no medical knowledge and so the choice of word might not be the best fit. What do you think is the best choice of word in this case?

This is terrible, disapppointing news. I was just thinking several days ago that the worst thing would be if he gets injured and here it is. :disapp:

He pushed himself way to hard this summer with all those shows and commitments. The poor guy had what... a week of vacation at best? Knowing him he's feeling really bad about this, but rest is certainly what he needs. But if he's not better for CoC ...

IMO, no matter what direction some press would try to lead Yuzu’s injury and withdraw from upcoming tournaments, it is somehow complicated referring to JP skating competitive ecosystem which we as outsiders could not clarify the truth indeed.

Instead, I might to urge all of you to take positive action to express our considerations and cheering to Yuzu and his team. Hope they can get some delighted messages from fans besides the mass insincere assumptions around.

Please write your support email to Yuzu or Borser Team at The Cricket Club: [email protected]

geez; I'm going to believe the myofascial (muscle injury); that came from JSF right? I mean 'authorized personnel' means who? because I don't want to think about disc damage  that's a lot more serious

You're right. I guess Yuzu really need our collective positive energy right now. :)

I sure hope this journalist is exaggerating things a bit in here. Muscle injury is way better than bone issues.

I understand, I just thought I'd toss it out in case it set off any light bulbs.

The former (deviated/deviation) would be something used to describe being out of alignment. It is more often used. . . well in cases that would be odd here, but out of alignment can be somewhat vague and refer to a lot of stuff. It also does get used with the perforated/perforation/hernia/herniated issues. That. . . can be bad and can happen somewhat out of the blue (had a co-worker who claimed she felt it happens suddenly while jogging - she needed surgery). It is basically when the discs cushions between the vertebrae actually pop/rupture and can need surgery. To be honest I am sorta hoping it is not that. Somewhat hoping it is some sort of deviation and nothing ruptured.

Then again, we are also trusting the news report is both accurate and clearly understood so. . . who knows.

I know what you mean when you said it is out of the blue. It has happened to me before. I sneezed, just a small sneeze, and next thing I knew was my back hurt. After that, I was out for a month.

Just like echotpe said, we need to stay positive and we could send in our support by emailing him.
