59th ISU Congress: Watch and Discuss

No. Viewing something as artistic or not is in the eye of the beholder. I never ever saw an RG routine as anything else as performing RG exercises to some background music while trying to keep with its tempo and rhythm. It is just a casual viewer's opinion and perception, might be hurting to a fan's soul, but it is by no means concerning unless you mean a fan's concern with an apparent gap between intentions and perceptions achieved :)
I have no doubt it is different to the eye of a fan. To me, these are completely different beasts and this is my opinion. Yours can be different and I do not find it concerning at the slightest.

I watched rhythmic gymnastics once. My soul writhed in agony. I have no desire to watch ever again. I certainly didn't see any connection between what they were doing and the music, not like when as a young pup I watched Toller and immediately felt and saw that visceral connection.

That said, different strokes for different folks, and let them do whatever they do :). Jumping off, and not directed at this comment, I don't have a problem with a commercial logo. I do love costumes, and if a tasteful initials or some such logo gets a discount or a free costume for a skater, I'm all for it.

What yesterday's drama with Austria Speed didn't manage is now happening with all of Canada's proposals to amend minimum ages for officials and add missing brackets: it puts me to sleep :bed:

I am all for skaters skating in comfortable athletic attire that is purposely fitted for exertion on ice and protects their bodies as much as possible, providing comfort, durability and ability to wash and change, mix-and-match. Logos are also fine on athletic wear. Win-win.

Fair enough, though I already have visions of something more like...

(and while the small ones you mention may be hard to see on many more complex costumes - which defeats the purpose? - they'd stand out rather more on many men's BlackIsTheNewBlack duds. Or Vera Wang. Just sayin')

At least you went for F1. We have had some questionable sponsors in motorbike racing...

I don't know how current British Eurosport commentator Jamie Whitham (ENG) managed to keep a straight face wearing this:

Jamie Whitham (ENG) - Heron Suzuki (1989 Isle Of Man TT)

Rider Randy de Puniet (FRA) certainly benefitted from his team boss signing this sponsorship deal - he ended up marrying this particular example of the "sponsor's product"!

Randy de Puniet (FRA) - LCR Honda (2010 MotoGP World Championship)

And Rory Skinner (SCO) from last season (he has since left the team, but the team still has the same sponsor):

Rory Skinner (SCO) - American Racing (2023 Moto2 World Championship)

Proposal 257 (Senior Elite 12 allowed to compete with regular senior synchro in international competitions to avoid cancellation due to lack of teams) - Great Britain was concerned about ranking points, he seems happy with the answer. Accepted.

RG is display of skills but I always fail to understand why I should be intersted and why they would use music to do something so disconnected.

Why has no one made a proposal to stop judges from sneaking up on skaters at competitions and monitoring what they're eating? (Gracie Gold's book).

And why has no one proposed that the judges who are caught cheating are banned for life? Or a proposal that cuts back on the awkwardness and ugliness of the step sequence?
Sometimes I think this session /committee / whatever is a massive waste of time and money.

My daughter was a rhythmic gymnast in her high school and university years, and to this day retains incredible hand-eye coordination and dexterity. She says she found the training useful in her adult career as a concert violinist. At the lowest gymkhana levels, in her day at least, there was no music and the girls wore plain leotards. The audience just marvelled at the intricacies of the routines done by the best competitors, the seamless progression from one move to the next, and applauded sympathetically as the gymnasts retrieved fumbled and missed and rolling-out-of-bounds equipment. I've tried it along with my daughter, and the only apparatus I could control was the ribbon. It's an extremely difficult sport to do well -- I just wish they'd get rid of the elaborate makeup and costumes and that strutting entrance. (I don't like those aspects of synchronized swimming either, but that's a sport that, personally, leaves me cold. However, all preferences are valid.)

The problem with this is that I don't know who you saw and when, because I have a feeling that if your introduction to skating had been for example Sasha Trusova, and not Toller, your perception of the artistic merits of skating would be quite different, perhaps even to the point of not watching it again. 😅

Don't want to step on your toes, but can you please just try to explain what about for example this routine is disconnected from the music? I'm genuinely asking.

Proposals 226 - 233 (includes returning to reverse order for the free skate) - Japan wants to isolate 227 (PCS), but is voted to stay in the package. Austria wants 232 (relates to qualifying rounds), accepted and removed from package. Belgium wants to remove 230 (reverse order), proposal remains in the package.

The more I watch RG (and all main media in my country want me to watch it all the time probably because of Russian from Cyprus stealing Liliana Lewińska's olympic qualification drama), the more I'm convinced that I would enjoy it more without music, heavy makeup and rhinestones on leotards.

The song is about a guy who had good sex and wants more good sex (sorry, this isn't deep and complicated song) and the girl who is btw 18 does a ribbon routine. The routine is impressive, but I'm not sure if I want to know where is the connection with the song.
