I was wearing my Russia team jacket with "RUSSIA" in huge letters on the front AND I had a 3ft x 5ft Russian flag that I was waving, and I didn't feel weird at all. But there were a bunch of Japanese fans sitting behind me (and no one in front of me), and they didn't seem to care. I did scream so loudly for Lena that the lady sitting next to me switched seats with her husband, but that was about it.

Hi Batsuchan- I think I may have seen you at ladies short! I sat a few rows behind the technical specialists and saw a couple of people come in wearing very cool-looking Russian jackets who sat a few rows in front of me :). I was in a different place for each event though. For ladies free, I sat directly in front of a club section full of preteen girls literally screaming their heads off for Gracie, Ashley, Mirai, etc. A guy sitting near us actually started arguing with them and it got ugly fast, and he ended up getting kicked out! Lots of drama, and not the kind I wanted! Anyway, I am now trying to refrain from saying much about Lena's skating in the regular skating threads because I am not objective at all, and don't want to get into arguments with other posters. On one hand, I always love her skating because I'm a fan, but I am also beginning to be more critical of her because I want her to do well, and I know she is capable of more than what we're seeing. I am not as critical of the skaters I don't care about. Elena can still be sloppy sometimes, and I think she and Inna really need to polish her movements. For ex, she sort of does this hop in between the spin combinations at the end of her titanic program, which is really distracting and I think would be an easy thing to fix. When she does the spiral/leg extension at the end of her program, she lets go of her leg too quickly/abruptly so it makes that element feel rushed and choppy. I think she has always done these things and gotten away with it b/c she's so darn good, but now that she is taller and has more presence, those little things have become very noticeable and distracting. If she and Inna can just fix them, she will be great. Whoever choreographed her Imagine exhibition is awesome and should do her competitive programs as well. In any case, I can't wait to see her next season, and hope she will make it to Worlds again!

Well, I'm glad that Lena won the fan vote after all, and super happy that Lena is super happy about it! :hap57:

However, I'm really bummed that Liza had to pull out. I really was looking forward to more Liza/Lena cuddling... :sad21:

At least Lena will have her two big "brothers" from CSKA to entertain her. Speaking of which, check out this fan art of Lena and her "partner in crime"!!
https://pp.vk.me/c633929/v633929734/1fd2d/N6-nJ_33zWM.jpg

Simply awesome!!!!

Batsuchan, you are good because I cheered very hard and loud for Lena, went to those practices, and skater stalked to find her, but could not see myself wearing a Russia jacket. I needed my American skaters to do well too. I was ready to sacrifice one of them if need be for Lena to get a medal. Honestly not sure who I cheered the loudest for, but I needed that US medalist streak to end and once I accepted Lena would likely not make the podium I pushed for Ashley and Gracie. All the ladies brought it though.

To be fair, I had flags for the US and Japanese skaters too (but smaller ones), which I waved proudly. And I yelled very loudly for all my faves--Soyoun, Zijun, Mao, Mirai... Honestly, I'm just not a fan of Ashley (though I enjoyed her performances at Worlds) or Gracie, and I couldn't care less about the US' lack of medals. I personally prefer to see the good people win. ;)

Ahh, unfortunately, that wasn't me you saw. I saw those girls with the Sochi Olympic jackets too and was jealous; theirs were nicer than mine!

I also don't say much about Lena in the other threads, but I have a whole list of things for her to work on too.

As for the little hop between her spins--I think that's actually a transition move (but you're right that it looks kind of sloppy). I forget what it's called--a "falling leaf"? Lena does need to work on holding her positions longer, since she has a body that could produce really nice long lines.

I think Elena Maslennikova did her "Imagine" EX (she also did the Zombie one). But she did Lena's Rachmaninoff LP last season and I didn't love that, so I'm not so sure she's the best choice. (And she and Inna may have had some kind of falling out, if the rumors are to be believed...)
In this thread, someone said that Misha Ge is going to choreograph for Lena next season????
http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/sh...eam-Programs&p=1415102&viewfull=1#post1415102

I don't follow Misha on Twitter, so I dunno if he really said that. That could be...interesting???

I'm still kinda hoping for Peter Tchernyshev...or back to Ilya Averbukh again?

Averbukh will be working with Evgenia only. He said this.

Tchernyshev? Did you see Kovtun's LP this season:no:? No way.

But she is definitely needs to chage her choreo/ and i hope we will see a strong mature young women in the next season.

I'm not sure we should judge any choreographer by what they do for Kovtun... :palmf:

I liked the Latin dance SP he did for Sotnikova, and I absolutely *adored* the FD he did for the Shibutanis.

Did Averbukh say he will only work with Zhenya, exclusively?? Or that she's the only one who has requested he choreograph for her so far?

It would be too bad if he doesn't work with Lena again, but maybe she will find a choreographer who is a perfect fit for her. :agree:

As i can understand Elena (and Lipnitskaya too) doesn't want to work with Averbukh because his strict character.

I remember an interview where Averbukh said that he wants to create more programs and be more active in this role just like Lambiel, Lori Nichol, Nikolai Morozov. If he said that well, i'm happy for Evgenia: after her new WR she should become a legend in FS over the years and she needs the best team for her.

About Kovtun: i don't know why but i suspect that TAT is still involved in the choreographies of his programs... :scratch3:

BTW Tchernyshev is a good choice for her.

It might be time for a little strict, if it cleans up the posture and gets some better programs.

Sadly, I think just working with Averbukh a few times (once to set the program, and maybe 1 or 2 other times to tweak the program) is not going to be enough to fix Lena's posture problems....That's got to be trained every day. I'm all for subjecting Lena to some strict ballet-training regimen, but for that to happen, I think 1) Lena needs to get the funding for this kind of trainer, and 2) Lena herself has to realize that her lack of gracefulness is something she needs to work on.

A little bit about Lena's new dress:
http://www.fsrussia.ru/news/2072-elena-radionova-etot-sezon-poluchilsya-slozhnym.html

Q: You changed your costume for the free program.
A: Yes, this dress was sewed by a famous Russian designer Alena Akhmadullina. Since it is very nice work! The dress I really like, it turned out very unusual, is not like [any other costumes] at all.

Here's a shot from the designer's Instagram:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BDxeCQ-re-x/?hl=en

And here's a news article about it from the designer's website:
http://alenaakhmadullina.ru/news/n-8808

I was wondering how this came about, but it sounds like Anton Sikharulidze (former pairs skater) arranged it. It sounds like he's arranging sponsors for Elena for the Olympics??? And I guess Akhmadullina is going to keep making dresses for Elena. I'm not sure how I feel about that... :palmf:

Though I do like a lot of her runway collections, so maybe they could come up with something interesting. I just was not a fan of Lena's new pink-and-green dress. At all. :disapp:

Sorry for the back-to-back long posts, but here are my thoughts about Elena at Worlds...

Well, on one hand, Elena skated clean (no UR or edge calls), and she scored within 2 points of her personal best, so her performance can't be called a failure at all. At both Euros and Worlds, Lena was able to execute her jump elements as planned (i.e., no improvised 3Lz+3T or 3Lo+3T combos), so her jumps have definitely become more stable relative to the start of the season.

However, I'm very sad that Elena finished off the podium for the first time in her senior career, with probably her worst placement EVER, and it broke my heart to see her like this!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycK58IKtbcg

I was also crushed that she didn't get to perform in the gala. But it seems that she's taking it in stride. And now she seems happy to be going to TCC!

Here are some impressions:

1) Elena, the girl
Even cuter than I expected!
I wrote this already, but before her turn at practice, she and the other skaters would come out a few minutes before they went out on the ice and warm up/stretch a bit. All the other skaters were focused on themselves, but Elena was kinda dancing along to whatever music they were playing in the arena, and she looked relaxed and smiley when she was talking to Inna Goncharenko and Alexander Uspenski. She also knew that the fans standing by the railing were taking photos of her, so she would look up and smile from time to time. When they announced her name on the PA system, me (and a few others) would scream really loudly, and she smiled and looked really pleased. She also would look up and smile if you called her name as she skated me--some of the Russian ladies sitting by us did this.

2) Elena in practice
I was very impressed during Lena's SP practice in TD garden, as I already reported. Even though she is shorter than Anna, and maybe Gracie too, to me, she looked taller than them, maybe because her legs are so long and she's thinner. She also skates very fast and regularly laps the other girls, so she stood out. Some of her jumps in practice looked very good--because she skates very fast, she had good distance on her jumps, and some of the landings were definitely smooth, with no break in the body and no scratchiness.
Like here, in her SP runthrough:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BDn6dvKCIZu/?taken-by=spacezelda

However, she did make a lot of jump errors in practice. Definitely the most of any of the top ladies, by far. She had several popped jumps, a hard fall on a 3S-tano attempt (after a 3Lo-1Lo), and some other falls. Whenever she makes a mistake on a jump, she skates over to Inna Goncharenko to confer with her, and this happened a lot.

In the FS practice, Lena's speed was not as noticeable, but I was sitting at the far end of the rink opposite the K&C, while I was sitting on the side (to the right of the judges) during the SP practice. What I noticed more was Lena's more aggressive tactics. Most of the other skaters try to gauge where the others are before they start a jumping pass, and I'd see Mao, for example, abort a lot of jumping attempts if she thought someone else might be in her way. However, Lena would pretty much just go for it, no matter what anyone else was doing. As a result, she and Anna had a very minor collision (their skates hit) because Lena exited a spin and skated forward right as Anna was passing by. From other live reports I've read (from Skate America 2014), this seems pretty typical for her.

3) Elena in competition
I have to be honest, I was somewhat disappointed by Lena's performances in Boston. I have always loved her SP when I watched it on video, but in person, there was not a lot to grab your attention until the step sequence. Lena also did not skate as fast as she does in practice. It's a real shame she had a shaky landing on the 3F; if she had been clean, it is quite likely she would've landed on the podium or at least in the gala!

I was never a fan of Lena's "Titanic" program before, and I did not like it when I saw it live either. However, Lena did seem like she was selling her program more than she did in the SP, but it just did not seem to do much with the music at all.

I was really looking forward to seeing Lena's chic black lace dress from Euros, so I was shocked when she came out in the pink & green costume. Sorry Lena, but I hated it! My mom thought it made her look childish, and I completely agree. All of her other costumes this season have been gorgeous, so I was really disappointed. I do understand why she didn't use the black dress, however--the skirt looked way too long and difficult to jump/spin in.

I was happy that Lena managed to skate pretty clean, however. Yes, many of her jumps had some iffy landings, but considering all the mistakes she made in practice, I was impressed again by how she "never lets go" in competition! Unlike Rika or Satoko, who did clean full run-throughs and had almost all clean jumps, I never saw anything resembling clean run-through, or a clean first half or second half from Lena. I still have no idea how she manages to put it together when it counts!!! But I could see her really concentrating before each jump; to win, I think the jumps need to look effortlessly flawless.

***

Overall, it has been a surprisingly good season for Lena considering that it was probably the peak of her puberty struggles. Back in September, I was quite worried that Lena wouldn't even make the Worlds team. Part of the reason Lena's programs were so terrible, in my opinion, is that they were not chosen to be CHAMPION programs; they were chosen because they would be easy for Lena to skate to while she struggled to stabilize her jumps.

But going forward, if Lena wants to have any chance of winning, or even getting back on the podium again, she desperately needs better programs! Elena is such a natural performer, but it was not obvious during her live performances. She definitely should work on becoming more graceful, but in the meantime, an upbeat program that allows her to showcase her effervescent smile and her speed would be good. As ovafanboy1 said, programs with a strong beat that allow the audience to clap along seem to go over much better.

I think Lena needs a program with a strong rhythm that she can dance to, and that allows her to play to the crowd. And I think it would mask her lack of gracefulness better.
Today, I was thinking of this song--I can totally see Lena dancing to this:
https://youtu.be/9nvJs410Mkw?t=54s

Maybe she could do a Latin SP paired with a Broadway or jazzy LP?
I think this would be a good way to differentiate herself from the other girls, since Zhenya has more of a pretty-balletic style, while Anna has more of a dramatic style.

As for Lena's jumps, they are still a work in progress, judging by her practices. She had some big mistakes, but she also had some really nice ones, so I'm hoping that they will start to become stable soon. I was also shocked/impressed that Lena was landing 3S+1Lo+3S-tano and 3Lz+3T-tano combinations--she's not just retaining her old jumps but now adding difficulty!! Perhaps we'll see these jumps next season.

However, I think that most of all, Lena just needs time. She does look like she has some more growing/filling out to do, and she needs more time to adjust to her body. And she definitely needs to work on being more graceful and polished. But I'm hopeful that she'll get there!

Actually I don't think that Lena's gracefulness is comparable with Rika. It's just that her competitive programs don't show her beautiful lines, extension. If you watch her gala numbers this year, you'll see a completely different Lena! That's what I want to see in competition to make this posture talk stop, because she can skate beautifully:roll5:

That was very interesting to read, Batsuchan. Your honesty is wonderful and refreshing. :) Hopefully some of the TCC money will be used for better programs next year. And yes, I think a jazzy/Broadway program would suit her very well (as long as it's nothing that is overused already).

Batsuchan, thanks for sharing all your thoughts! I love hearing them, and agree with many of your assessments. I wish I had been able to see Lena in practice. I agree it is quite impressive that she has non-clean practices and then comes out each time and hits those jumps, even if the landings aren't perfect. That is a true testament to how good of a competitor she is! I can't wait to see her when those jumps are more stabilized. I agree that her jumps seem to be getting better, and the B.ESP people were saying she is entering them with more speed, so kudos to her!

I thought her new FS dress was only OK. One blog compared it to cotton-candy ombre dog-barf which seemed unnecessarily harsh. I was actually OK with the pink-green color combination, but the neck-line with the bows made it look too precious and little girl-ish. My favorite FS dress is still the initial purple one with the pink sash. I'd be happy if whoever designed that dress did all her others .

Koatcue, I agree that she skates beautifully to her Imagine exhibition, so it's not that Lena lacks grace, but she just needs the right vehicles. I wonder if in her competitive programs, they try to pack in so many transitions that it makes all her movements look rushed?

Finally, just wanted to share another Lena moment that made me proud. I don't know if others watching live noticed, but when Anna P got her well-deserved scores after the FS, Elena came out and gave her a big hug, and looked very happy for her. Since others (not here) have sometimes implied Elena isn't a great sport when she gets beaten by other Russian ladies, I was happy to see this moment proved them wrong. I'm sure Elena was disappointed, but glad to see her cheering her co-skaters on.

Anyway, I'm so glad Elena has many fans cheering her on around the world, because she is really a special skater :)

I don't know if anyone got a video of this- if they did, I would love to rewatch! I just happened to be looking over in the Kiss and Cry after Anna got her scores, and I saw Elena come out of the green room or whatever they call it (where the current 1st through 3rd place skaters sit and wait) and give Anna a big hug before leaving. I think Anna's score had just kicked her out of medal contention actually. The only other person I saw who did something similar was Max Aaron coming out to hug and congratulate Adam in the Kiss and Cry. It was very sweet to watch.

It's so cool that Lena wore your jacket!! I'll have to be sure and get her something cool she will wear next time.

Made a seperate thread in "The Edge" for this interview. Zhenia and Anna are getting tons of spotlight in Russia after worlds with no sign or mention of Elena. Down with that! Spread the Radionova love!

http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/sh...give-myself-B-at-worlds&p=1421315#post1421315

Will post video interview translations tomorrow or whatever else is of interest while we wait for TCC. :)

I know!! Thanks for posting that interview, I really enjoyed it. I actually don't mind so much that Evgenia and Anna are getting lots of attention. I mean, I wish it were Elena who won, etc. but the other girls (esp Anna) deserve the attention for how well they performed at Worlds, and I hope now that the spotlight is off Elena, she can really work hard, at both skating and her studies! I want her to do well in her post-skating life too, so these tests are important!
