More information on Caro Kostner's programs:

SP: Chopin Nocturne and Violin Concerto by Tchaikovsky.
LP: Air on a G String (tee hee) by Bach and Cello Concerto by Vivaldi.

I for one am very excited, particuarly by the SP, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto is amazing and I can't believe more skater's haven't used it!

"new" SP: Concierto de Aranjuez (Joaquín Rodrigo, arranged by Edvin Marton)

much better choice on his part. I love chopin more than anything, but it is too subtle for his style of skating.

i love carolina's music, all of it, but I am not convinced it is the best choice for her. I will wait and see.

The Nutcracker, then. Something done to death was the point I was aiming at . I could do a much better job of picking Evan's music than Carroll and Nichol, but I guess that's not saying much.

that's just it, he's letting his team make those decisions and then he just skates whatever he's given... his exhibitions he seems to take more of an interest in... which is fine, he wants a formula that wins... but still... boring...

Kurt Browning used Firebird in 1992 for his LP, IIRC, and it didn't go so well... will the Men's World Champ curse continue?

Carolina's music, especially for her LP (Bach's Air on G String is beautiful), looks very promising; I'm hoping for programs with the feel of her lovely 2007 Worlds SP.

According to this blog, Jeremy Abbott has scrapped his original LP and will be skating to Symphony No. 3 by Saint Saens. No idea if that's actually true.

They look in a really great shape and show incredible ability and speed, but this program is a waste of talent to me. No surprise. No emotional impact. No story. Phantom is not for figure skating, or at least not for Ice dance or Pairs.
Bad, bad program. The worst is the music. Plus she didn't look like she really felt the program.

The music choices this year are so disappointing. Especially for the pairs, but also for dance and the other disciplines.

Pairs is a mess. My favourite choices are those of Pang / Tong, creative, unusual but sophisticated choices.

Shen / Zhao drive me bananas with their "The Top Ten Hits of classical music"-programs (after Four Seasons, Nutcracker, Turandot, Claire de Lune, Rachmaninov Piano concerto, Meditation - they got really creative and chose "Adagio" from Albinoni!), Zhang / Zhang go for two warhorses, Savchenko / Szolkowy have a bland short and some stupid music for the long, don't even get me started on "Love Story", "Requiem for a dream" and "The way we were". It's a freaking nightmare this year.

Kavaguti / Smirnov could actually snatch a major title this year, they chose real music for both the long and the short, their free program looked decent at the Russian test skate, it suits them very well - their short program was already a hit last year.

And don't get me wrong, I don't want to be the music snob here. I mean, I am a snob - but that's not the point. I don't want everybody to skate to classical music that I approve of. If some pair would put on some AC/DC and rock that in leather costumes with creative and powerful choreography and skating - I would love them forever. But this year they either chose bland pseudo-music or war-horses. It's a nightmare!

mmh...I don't associate Metal-Punk-Rock program whit creativity/entertainment. When the Kerrs come up with modern pieces I don't suddenly cry "wow!, at last!, they rock!" or something like that. To me "different" music choices don't necessarily mean interesting programs (except for the Lady below)

That's why I said "with creative and powerful choreography" - the music alone doesn't do it. E.g. I rarely liked any of Savchenko / Szolkowy's music choices, but I could still enjoy the programs, because they are often creative, with some unusual moves etc.

zueva and schpilband....overkill the move that is called the "combination lift"
the music is disabling me from liking it. but that....back hands-free sitting lift....is WAAAAY better than V/M.

i like the free attitude... bit theatrically reactive to music...but ...growth...change...development...

Is Requiem for a Dream a warhorse already? I can't imagine anyone dismissing it as pseudo-music.

I'll echo 1795 that the combination lift is wierd, but I really like both V/M and D/W "no hands" lifts. But Phantom of the Opera is trite and hideously banal music, and while it suits them (not a backhanded compliment - it's big, and they skate big), this really is an uninteresting program.
