2010-2011 Programs by Discipline

Ooh, "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue!" That's a cool piece to skate to, very jazzy. I believe the first performance of it was choreographed by Balanchine for the Broadway stage. Gene Kelly also designed a version of it, which he danced with Vera-Ellen.

I hope Rachael enjoys interpreting that and "Summertime." Does anyone know who her choreographer was? I hope they designed a program that does justice to the music.

Ok, I love MOG but I think it is becoming one of the most overused pieces of music. What is it with Lori Nichol these days? That said, Mirai has the qualities to make that program truly magical

I was wondering the same thing. What happened to the Michelle Kwan effect? Isn't Lori supposed to unlock some secret vault and extract some rarely hear, unique and beautiful music to help propel her star into the upper echelon of competition? Or did she use all her good and interesting music on Michelle? Or does she simply choreograph for too many skaters to be able to single one out as deserving of some magical, transformative piece. I actually would say the Michelle Kwan effect is something more like girls starting right off in Novice trying to interpret more "sophisticated" pieces of music. But anyway, Mirai's Carmen ended up getting pretty good by the end of the season, so maybe we can expect the same with Memoirs too.

Oh no! According to "Skate Music List,"

"Slaughter on Tenth Avenue won the all-time "kiss of deat" award. No skater has ever won a gold medal with it, despite a substantial list of top skaters who have tried it.

Well, I don't think anyone is expecting Rachael to defend her national title this year just because, well, when was the last time a US lady did that? I don't think anyone expects GPF, 4CC, or World gold from her this season either, GP golds are definitely within her reach, but competition will be stiff and all, plus, silver and bronze aren't too shabby either :).

YouTube has Tonya Kwiatkowski using it in /93..Joanne Conway (Gbr) in /87 , but I seem to remember a number of men using it earlier on...I just don't remember who , and I could get nothing to pop up starting from the music... I even seem to remember some dying on the ice.. ( but there was so much of that ,for a while, I could be wrong..)

I do hope they don't dress Rachael like Vera Ellen in the Rogers & Hart movie. That was a nice program she had last year , but I never felt it really suited her..or maybe I mean that she couldn't really carry it off.( For me)

Or any other year in the future. Her time is up. I expect her consistency to drop and a retirement from skating to focus solely on college within a year or two.

This reinforces my theory that the magic was in the combination of the two participants (and Frank Carroll as well, of course)--Kwan was a unique muse for Nichol's talents and sensibilities. It's like Lennon-McCartney. Both were brilliant, but neither was able to reach those heights alone, with the occasional exception. The whole was considerably more than the sum of its parts.

While I understand that Lori probably has a lot of skaters demanding her time, that still doesn't explain the use of "warhorses" for music pieces. It's just as hard to cut and edit a familiar piece as an unfamiliar one, so the time and energy input would be about the same. And as I know from my own experience of music (though not trained, I'm an avid listener), I've never narrowed my listening to a small range of Classical Top Ten pieces. Just off the top of my head, I'd look in more places than Carmen and recent soundtracks. Even at my busiest (and especially if someone's skating career depended on it), I'd look into chamber music, less usual operas, and other not-so-common categories. And so would most of you! I've seen the great suggestions you all have come up with on the music threads. So what gives with Lori, who I consider to be one of the great musical minds in skating?
