2010-2011 Programs by Discipline

I still can't believe that Brian will be skating to this music, it almost makes me cry, lol. I mean the music, of course. :)

Seriously, this music is so triumphant, aching beautiful, JOYFUL, and heartbreaking that one has to be an accomplished skater to even tackle it. To my great regret Oksana Baiul never skated to this piece, despite my begging her to do so when I was part of her fan club (lol, yeah I only joined because I wanted her to skate to this piece, besides being her fan as well of course).

Imho only Oksana Baiul can do this piece justice because she inhabits everything necessary for such a bravura masterpiece ~ J O Y first & foremost. That smile & face says it all. And she's never been afraid to show her soul, her emotions, on the ice. To be naked; to bare her innermost being. Then of course there's the way that she skates, those arms, those legs, that style. She's unique. There will never be another one quite like her. She can be a ballerina one moment, a 1920's flapper the next, or a showgirl, or simply an artist on ice. What I wouldn't give to see her do this piece justice.

In the meantime, I will be content to see Brian's version, more than content. Thanks Brian & David!!!!!!

p.s. I'll never forget Midori Ito lighting the Olympic cauldron in 1998, and in the background playing was Beethoven's 9th Symphony ~ classic moment in figure skating history!

Maybe the music will overwhelm Brian, but maybe he'll rise to the occasion. One of my favorite lines from poetry is this by Robert Browning: "Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a Heaven for?" If Joubert and Wilson want to reach for something that's just beyond their grasp, hooray for them! I'll tune in eagerly.

Olympia, that was beautiful:)

The music will overwhelm the skating.

Actually, that's an interesting way of putting how I feel about skaters who skate to music I enjoy. I find myself listening to the song more and paying less attention to the skater on the ice...

It could but David Wilson is a pretty competent choreographer. He's one of the best at bringing out the strengths of his skaters.

I'm intrigued.

Thanks for unearthing that, Nadine!

Thanks, Anna, for the links. I especially liked her spin sequence in the long program. I have to say, I'm pleased with the edits that were done to the Evita music to create her long program. There were a lot of melodically interesting segments from the songs and very little dependence on "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina." I only wish they had made use of the syncopation of "I'd Be Surprisingly Good for You," but I'm not sure Korpi's ethereal serenity would be compatible with the calculating come-hither required by that song.

I also liked the arrangement of "Over the Rainbow" for the short program. That single violin gives it a maturity that Korpi carries off very well.

What does anyone make of her chances this year?

Judging from her popped and dumbled jumps at Neblehorn it seem like she's struggling with her usual problems. I think her chances are the same as last year. A world medal is possible but she is one of those skaters who has to be absolutely perfect.
Anyway, I agree about the arrangement of "Over the Rainbow" - it really suits her and luckily the arrangement is not cheesy.
I love her FS costume even though it has little to do with Argentina or Evita than I can see - but who cares?

I'd say she has a good shot at at least 1 GP final medal, a podium finish at Europeans, and a top 10 finish at Worlds. With the injuries of Mirai and Laura and no Joannie or Yuna on the GP circuit this season, she may have a decent shot at qualifying for the GPF. Worlds medal is unlikely but possible.
