Honestly, when I write "some people" I assume the people I'm talking about know who they are...their comments are really worded as if they want to cause trouble, and I would prefer not to quote them directly and encourage more of those types of posts. Debate and disagreement is great, but when there are just blanket statements being made with no rationale/justification/evidence it's very unproductive and just breeds discord.

Well, he skated to Chopin and did it brilliantly with grace and ease and I think he interprets it into whatever he feels. I don't think there needs to be a back-story that he lost a lover or is a drug addict or is coming home from war to warrant those marks when he lays down that kind of skate. Love him or hate him, he cannot be denied gold here, it was beautiful.

I agree. There are many brilliant and beautiful programs that use the music to tell a story (especially warhorse ballet and opera pieces) but it's possible to do a program where the movements just hit the music perfectly. Chan did it here. And Yuzu does it pretty well in his SP too. Yuzu's LP is a combination of playing a character/hitting the music. Patrick's LP is all music. One isn't necessarily harder than another, but Patrick executed his better tonight.

Let me be up front first: I'm not a giant Patrick fan.

Patrick was impressive tonight. I still get the cold, distant thing with his programs. He just doesn't do it for me like that. However, he was very impressive. I did enjoy his performance, though for me, it's more of a respect at the talent. It's how I've always felt about him: The movement fits the music (though his shoulders remain too stiff, IMO), there's the right amount of highlights, great edge work, everything you need for a great skate, except the emotional connection (for me.)

Here's the thing: He's gonna be at a disadvantage, TES wise, with Hanyu/Fernandez. One Quad and One 3A in this field, if the other goes clean in the short and relatively clean (one major/two minor mistakes) in the long, means he needs to skate perfectly to be on the level.

I can say Patrick deserved to win here. And NO ONE should/can ever accuse a Patrick Chan program of being "easy and with no choreography."

I will say that everytime there's a major event in Canada they would try and make sure at least one Canadian gets gold (Not greedy like some others) and the rest are on their own, Like at Vancouver Olympics.
I didn't have S\P winning 2001 Worlds back then (Was a B\S fan), But you know, Russia and France more than made up
for it about 10 months later, So mischief can be forgotten imo

Honestly, I've found your posts really insightful about why you think Patrick's score was too high. For you it comes down to quantity v. quality, and you think that quality shouldn't trump quantity to such a degree. It shocked and surprised me when I saw Patrick's TES for the same reason...but I think part of that was because last season with Yuzu and Denis was very, very much about quantity. Anyway, I can definitely see your perspective on the scores.

After catching up with the Pairs thread, I've learned that someone is just being salty about everyone that does well today because Liza got criticism for her performances in the Ladies threads :sarcasm: Way to troll.

Took another look at Patrick's program. The crazy GOE was not undeserved.

Frankly, I'm glad the judges are rewarding quality technical components. "Managing to stand a jump up" is not the same as "great jump!" unless you are Scott Hamilton commentating an event.

Also, there is no way that Nam should NOT have beaten Adam Rippon.

The kid had 2 quads and a 3A, none of which Adam delivered on his feet. Yeah, there is room to mature, and yeah that music was WAY too big for him, but it should be a scandal that he only beat Rippon on TES by 6 points.

I agree on both points. I almost didn't want to look in this thread for fear of the Chan-hating hordes. Chan deserved top GOE for every element he did. It was, simply, perfection. There was some room for the complaining when Chan won with a less than perfect skate, but now that he skates whistle clean there's still complaining! I thought it was the performance of a champion, full stop. Of course he wants to add that second quad, and it will come later in the season, no doubt, but for a first real test of this program I thought this was polished and gorgeous.

This is where it was really a level above Hanyu's at this point in the season. Hanyu's program was skated like it's still new to him, and I thought it noticeably lacked speed. I think it will smooth out and speed up as the season progresses.

I was a little shocked when I saw that Rippon had beaten Nam. That wasn't what I saw out on the ice.

She was caught being biased. No deal was proven. But we only have to look at the 2001 GPF...
