What a boooooring program. Poor murakami. Landed all the jumps but just didnt have the right vehicle...

I dunno, I kinda liked the old school vibe. But it started to unravel after the jumps went. I prefer his short, where he kept up the performance level despite the mistakes.

It's "old school," but I love it (if it would have been cleaner, anyway). It is like skating from the '90s Soviet and Euro guys - maybe '80s too, but I haven't watched much '80s skating. I wouldn't want to see everyone doing programs like that, but I also don't want to see everyone doing Chopin, or the Beatles, etc. Variety is best.
I would call it "classic" rather than "stale," though.

So what? Doesn't mean everything was scored correctly.
It's bad for the sport when something like that is receiving 10's for choreography and interpretation and when spins like that are getting +2's. How will anyone ever have incentive to spin like Natalie Krieg, or work an a spread eagle sequence as epic as Boitano's or body slide like Yagudin's in Gladiator, or come up with as interesting of arm movements as Lambiel, or as musical a step sequence as Petra Barna or Lambiel, or as refined of body positions as John Curry, or as creative of movement as Cranston or Beacom. Patrick Chan's skating is not a model of perfection in every area and the scores need to reflect it.

No, I can't agree. "Classic" is John Curry and Robin Cousins. That was really old-fashioned, and not in a good way.
Just one opinion, of course. I find myself getting angry when I watch him skate... so much unrealized talent. He could be incredible.

This might be a stupid question...but what is the purpose of that mat that that guy was blowing up next to Hanyu? Sleeping or stretching?
Also, I'm uncomfortable with how attractive I find PChan when he's in a t-shirt and gym shorts. :hopelessness:

I feel this way strongly for Brezina and Han Yan too. So much possibility and talent. Is it their training circumstances that are not ideal?

i think that they are trained properly... but performing under pressure is maybe 60% mental preparation too... some skaters fail under pressure... there are tons but I can mention Sandhu or Chouinard from Canada for instance.... who never did well in big competitions but sometimes could just skate like there was no tomorrow...
I think it may the case for these two skaters... they do not have the killer instinct.... seeing how Patrick lost focus in Sochi and how tonight he was in the zone says a lot about how one can mentally make a difference on a performance

I feel sorry for Han Yan because I want him to get better choreography, but I doubt he has a lot of autonomy in that area or any other. And while he's inconsistent, he's only 19 still. Michal I do feel a bit annoyed with because he is 25, old enough that he should be a little more aggressive about fixing his issues, and doesn't seem to think he needs a sports psychologist...though I doubt that coach of his helps matters at all. I wonder if he would have been better if he could afford to stay with Petrenko.
Florent & Michal are massive wastes of talent...hopefully Han Yan will sort himself out before he is their age, though.

Not sure about Michal, but I wonder about Han. China obviously knows how to coach/train/everything with their pairs, but there hasn't been a World-medal-level singles skater since Lu Chen. Han Yan has the jumps and the SS, Li Zijun has a lot of unrealized potential, and Boyang has the jumps but nothing else. It must be difficult for skaters in disciplines that their countries are not proven experts at, I'm guessing. Yuna managed it with BOrser, Denis Ten with Frank Carroll, Javi with Morozov and Orser....but if you're sticking with your country's coaches and there's not an elite-level history, resources probably aren't ideal.

I've never found PChan attractive before because his face isn't anything special (sorry PChan, you're no Josh Farris) but those skating costumes are hiding a really great body!New ISU petition: all men skate in gym shorts and t-shirts.
