2016-2017 Programs by Discipline

Reposted from the Shibs fan thread:

Alex Shibutani just posted an Instagram photo showing he and Maia at a dance studio in California with hip hop dancer Aye Hasegawa. Hmmm...

Here's a video of Hasegawa dancing:

Alex also posted a picture of he and Maia with Hokutu Konishi, a dancer in the hip hop dance crew, Quest Crew (winner of the third season of America's Next Best Dance Crew). Konishi also choreographed LMFAO's Party Rock and their "Champagne Showers" video.

Here's the Emmy-winning SYTYCD performance he danced in, to the Memoirs of a Geisha soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZJpA9e7cCY

Say what you will about the Shibs, but they've consistently sought out professional dancers outside the ice dance realm. The issue was that the translation didn't always work well, or the choreography wasn't always compelling or they weren't compelling in it. Now, I hope with their new found maturity and confidence and improved skills in dancing and with more attention from Team Canton, they can really execute something amazing on the ice.

I had a feeling Alex and Maia were knowledgeable about Asian/Asian-American dancers in hip hop crews.

Assuming they are doing hip hop for their SD, I do wonder how would this mesh with their Frank Sinatra song choice since they had already announced they will be using Frank Sinatra's "That's Life" in their SD.

I still remember Mishin with his video camera recording Emanuel at Skate Canada one year. It seemed like he was a fan of Eman's movement on the ice... so not a huge surprise to see Liza with him all these years later. Never hurts to try a fresh choreographer.... and yeah, hope whatever they did retains some original flavour when the season starts.

If we're talking about ice dancers taking hip hop classes then it seems like most all of them have done it. Tessa & Scott, WeaPo during SOI Japan, DSC kids, the Montrealers, etc. I am not sure everyone or even anyone is going to go down the hip hop route.

Maybe they're just doing it the Brian Orser way, taking some hip hop lessons to help improve rhythm and develop a broader range of expressions, expanding your horizons can be lots of fun and very rewarding

That's just what I was thinking. Getting a chance to dance during training to music you actually like must be a big reason too.

Olivia Smart and Adria Diaz shared that their SD will be to Proud Mary by Tina Turner.

Mishin said Liza Tukt's free is almost ready and she is the queen of Egypt in her new program

I thought it looked like they were doing an "Egyptian pose" in the one photo...

Obviously it sounds like a similar theme to her FS two years ago, but we will see. I'm still hoping for great things from Liza so if going back to familiar territory helps her get her mojo back, I'm not necessarily against it.

I had no idea Brian O did this; Kori Ade has invited hip hop choreographers every year to 7k (Macklemore's choreographer was there for a week last year, IIRC. )

I would love to see Rohene choreo one of the SDs this year. Jes sayin' ....

It's sounds pretty similar to all her past programs, I'd like to see them give her something completely different, do something like a blues number or R&J/swan lake, etc.

Maxim Kovtun's SP will be L.O.V.E by Nat King Cole and Sing, Sing, Sing by Louis Prima. His FS will be Ruled By Secrecy by Muse.
